“Crazy to think that there will be a new President in the White House when they come back”

A reader reports:

“I stopped by Swings for my morning coffee and noticed this devastating sign. They are closing in March for an estimated 14 months while the CFPB building is renovated. While there are plenty of coffee shops in the WH area – Starbucks, Peets, Juan Valdez, and even Pleasant Pops across the park – losing Swings will be a tough blow to the neighborhood. Crazy to think that there will be a new President in the White House when they come back.”

  • I saw this yesterday morning and wanted to cry 🙁 A coffee of the day at Swing’s has been my daily morning ritual for five years now, I don’t know what I’ll do without them. Yes I know there’s other coffee spots in the area, but they’re all chains and it’s not the same. Starbucks is great for the occasional sugar-loaded flavored latte, but for quality every day coffee Swing’s was the best. I wonder if G Street Food and all the other businesses in that building are also closing? This is so sad!

    • I know it’s a consolation prize but the Starbucks single origin roasts brewed via their clover machine beats their normal house roasts. It’s 3.50 which is on par for pour over coffee, but the flavor are much better.

  • G Street, CVS and many of the other stores on the block are also closing. Apparently they building they are all housed in is doing extensive renovations and surveying that is taking longer than anticipated. It’s a big blow to a part of the city that actually doesn’t have a ton of great food and coffee options. There’s also Greenberry’s on E Street closer to the DOI and whatnot that’s great for local coffee, but the loss of Swing’s for 14 months is a huge pock on DC tradition 🙁

  • I saw that today during my afternoon coffee run. Swings is where I met friends to bitch about work – now where will we go?? (presumably somewhere as there is always more bitching about work to be done)

  • ah

    Ack.

And I have 11 stickers for coffee beans – one more to free, so better go buy more soon!

I wouldn’t be surprised if the delays are due to CFPB themselves. They are notoriously difficult to work with as an organization.

  • I work right around there and am legitimately kind of devastated about this. Not sure how I’m going to make it through election season without being able to duck in and grab a cappuccino or iced coffee.

Really hope that a) they find a temporary spot and b) the remodeled place retains the current spirit of the place

  • I work nearby part of the time. I liked the muffins, but the coffee is awful–the regular roast is rather dishwater-ish. the ambience is dark and depressing. None of the places on G are very good and the CVS is claustrophobic. I wind up going to Pennsylvania Ave or even up to H or I, instead for coffee or something to eat. Swing’s has a big wholesale business–that’s probably the core of their business.

    • Totally agree. I have to think that people who love Swings just haven’t tried Filter, or The Coffee Bar, or Peregrine, or Wydown, etc
