You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

    Rave: Tomorrow is Friday!
Rave: Found out our neighborhood shops are getting a Starbucks (!!), Chipotle (!!), a new concept “upscale” TGIFridays, and a Burger Place to accompany the Marshall’s, Five Below, etc. Thrilled for new food options!!
Rant: The attitude of some of the people in the neighborhood in reaction to the TGIFridays….some neighbors are concerned that Friday’s will attract “Undesirables” and demanding more “upscale” shops than the discount chains of Marshall’s and Five Below. Did they miss the fact that the shops are anchored by Costco and Lowe’s, and that there is an abandoned school and Goodwill within 2 minutes of the neighborhood? Not to mention the median income in Ft. Lincoln is barely $40,000 and there are a high number of senior citizens without any income at all living in the area??? Or maybe the fact that we are over 2 miles to the closest metro and WMATA was trying to cut the minimal bus service we have? No one comes out our way unless you a) live there or b) are going to Costco for $1.49 gas. Let’s try to get over ourselves, shall we? I’m floored at the holier-than-thou attitude of some of my neighbors- thought we left that behind when we moved to NE…
Rave: Can’t wait to be one of those “Undesirables” who frequents Friday’s hahahahah
Rave: $1.49 gas at Costco. $16 to fill up my tank this morning. SIXTEEN DOLLARS.

    • This former suburbanite appreciates the TGIFridays. While I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit, You are exactly right. Not everything needs to be upscale. Chains can be comforting. I’m glad they are doing something over in Ft. Lincoln. I wish I was in the position to buy over there.

      • FtLincolnLove

Agreed! I grew up in the suburbs and was expecting something along the lines of Applebee’s, so I’m super pumped it’s a Friday’s. I honestly didn’t know what people were expecting- we are suburbs inside of DC proper and all the shops coming reflect that. We aren’t a large enough neighborhood to support anything EXCEPT chains!

      • What I wouldn’t do for a TGIFridays in Langley Park! Fingers crossed that the Purple line gives me a restaurant and bar that I can walk to.

    • All of your R/Rs made me LOL. Thanks for that. Eat some potato skins for me!

    • I understand that development is good, not everyone is rich, and Starbucks makes a decent latte. But, personally, I too would be crushed at that particular suite of stores — it would like moving to the big city only to have a downscale suburban strip mall plopped next door. Perhaps not realistic in this location (and the snobbery against TGI Friday’s customers is as awful as Friday’s actual food) but the yearning for something a little more sophisticated than Marshall’s is entirely reasonable. Hipsters and yuppies are people too!.

      • FtLincolnLove

Oh agreed- I’m not thrilled about the Five Below (or Dick’s Sporting Goods, to be honest), and I too hoped for different shops, I just think it’s a little much for people to be claiming the neighborhood is downgrading because of the (in my mind) obviously suburban chains. Though, Marshall’s is awesome and it’ll be nice to walk across the street rather than drive across the city (or out to PG Plaza) if I want to go shopping. It was never marketed as a super upscale shopping center, so that’s where I am a little confused at some of the reactions. I respect and appreciate that everyone is entitled to their opinions but the snobbery is just not needed.

      • Ft Lincoln basically is the suburbs. It’s right on the PG County line. This location has more in common with the PG suburbs than urban DC. It makes sense to have bigger, middle market chains. No small, niche retail entrepreneur is taking a chance on FT Lincoln. No way in hell. Even Mount Pleasant and Petworth are seen as too risky by the successful DC retail entrepreneurs I personally know.

    • Not sure how long you have been here but the Friday’s sentiment is based on the fact that TGIF’s in other locations have attracted the hood element and have had problems with violence and have been shut down as a result. A cop was killed at the TGIF in Forestville for example. A lot of the newer Ft Lincoln residents in Dakota Crossing are more 6 figure earners and understandably desire to keep that element out.

  • Rave: Made it home just in time to avoid a soaking from the crazy storms last night! I felt like a little kid again, watching the lighting with the lights turned off in my living room. Glad we avoided a tornado, though!
Rant: I am so, so tired. I just feel like I can’t wake up all the way. My eyes feels so heavy, I really think that if it gets too quiet in here I’m going to nod off! Not acceptable.
Rant: Trying to find cat food with a novel protein source for a food allergy/intolerance trial. There aren’t many my cats haven’t had, and the few they haven’t tried are soooo expensive. πŸ™
Neither: Eagerly awaiting spring! Normally I love winter, but I’m just over it. I can’t wait for spring to be here soon and spend more time outdoors, even if my allergies do try to murder me.

    • That One Guy

I feel you on Spring. While it hasn’t been bad I could definitely use more light.
Maybe call the folks at Wylie Wagg and see what they have. I always found them helpful.

    • Agreed with the need for Spring! I hear it’s supposed to be in the 60’s this weekend!

    • Whole Foods surprisingly carries a few cat foods that are high protein/grain free. I think the WF brand may actually be grain-free too. There’s also a brand called Go! that Big Bad Wolf carries, but it is a bit pricey.

      • What I’m looking for is novel protein/novel carbohydrate, which for my cat is difficult to find something she’s never had exposure to before – the vet mentioned kangaroo as an option (!), and there are a few brands out there that use things like venison, buffalo, NZ brushtail (whatever that is), but I can’t find kangaroo, and she’s already had exposure to things like lamb, rabbit, quail, salmon…and most of these things are very, very expensive πŸ™ But so are Rx diets and vet trips.

        • (To be fair, I actually think the vet trip was very reasonably priced. I just wouldn’t want to have to do it more frequently because of kitty food intolerance / allergy issues!)

        • Oh no, do you have Ira Glass’ dog, but as a cat?!?!

        • We use Natural Balance…they have bison, kangaroo, duck, etc. It’s pricey but its better than our dog chewing all his hair off.

          • Yeah, they’re on my list of possibilities, but for cats, they don’t have quite as an extensive list of proteins… the only real option is venison, as she’s never had that before…

        • Have you tried Nature’s Variety Instinct? They have a canned venison and I think a dry one too. If you are near a Big Bad Wolf, they have always been really helpful with finding foods for my dog with a sensitive stomach and my cat with lots of snot/sinus/grain allergy issues.

          • Whoa! Bingo! Thanks for the suggestion for Big Bad Woof, looking at their website they have brands of food I’ve never heard of with novel proteins! Gonna trek out to Takoma this weekend and check out their store, talk to some folks, etc.

  • Rave: Merciful gods, I slept last night. Not as soundly as I’d like, but I am not close to core meltdown from exhaustion like I was yesterday morning.
    Rave: Heartburn meds that work.
Rant: Two weeks behind on thank you notes. I need to get in gear.
Rant: Family members posting pro-Trump messages on their FB walls. UGH.

  • justinbc

Rave: I’ve gotten a lot of hate / troll mail, messages, etc over the last 10 years or so over the various platforms I participate in, but whoever tracked down my Facebook yesterday to send me a message takes the cake as the craziest, least coherent I’ve quite possibly ever received. Just in case that was someone from here on PoPville, I wanted to say thanks, you provided me and my friends with quite a lot of laughs. You really shouldn’t take the Internet so seriously.

    • Geez. That is crazy. Who does that? Sorry you had to go through that, but glad you can laugh it off.

      • justinbc

Oh yeah, this was like paragraphs of stuff. Someone devoted entirely too much time for something which will obviously not have whatever effect they’re hoping to achieve.

    • whoa. That’s just nuts. and I would find it a little scary. But uh, at least you’re laughing about it. Keep being you, justinbc, we wouldn’t want you any other way.

    • Glad you could get a chuckle out of your cyber stalking, but the awful things those same idiots do and say to women online is high on my “things that make me weep for society” list.

    • C’mon, give us just a little taste. The three best quotes?

      • I Dont Get It

Do any of them involve an espresso machine? πŸ˜‰

      • LOL, I’m with dcd! What was the theme? Honestly, I know I shouldn’t be, but I am surprised someone took the time to do this. Also, the fact that this has happened other times is rather terrifying. I love/hate the internet!

      • Yes quotes please!
I’m sorry this happened to you though, how crazy.

      • justinbc

The whole thing is too hilarious that picking any one line out just omits another great one. Here’s the entirety:
” just stfu. really. you’re a douche and no one likes you and your voice and your opinions but i’m sure you know this already but wanted to remind you again. I just want to let you know that there is one among many out there that really hates you and your incessent talking with every fiber of their being. i’m sure no one has had the guts to say that to you in person or online. you’re not intimidating you’re just an introvert who’s a complete weirdo in person. I don’t understand how and why sooz is with you and why she is so blind to see what such a db you are. i hope she wakes up and realizes one day the type of person you are and your finances wont be enough and only need to take her cats.. the way that you treat people, how you believe yourself as a know it all and this intelligent person when you really are all for show when you’re clearly not how you are so condescending and how you treat others is dispicable.. I don’t know if you’re trying to compensate for your short height or the fact that you lack of any real authentic friends. Taking pictures of yourself, growing your beard to fish for compliments. all overkill and not necessary. were you bullied? is this why you bully others? i’m sure you’ll be using this to get some pity or to make yourself believe it’s so flattering. well, it’s not supposed to be, but whatever to make yourself feel better. so sick of seeing you tagging along and showing up everywhere. I am more than willing to meet up in person along with others who you think are your friends but really not so we can all say this to your face. seeing you cry would be the biggest accomplishment for most. yes because you’re that hated. lol. you’re terribly lame and boring. and so annoying. stop talking. just stop talking. cant wait until you really fail in life and get all that you deserve. big celebration then by many no lie. youre a child. an immature obnoxious child. bye.”

        • Oh that’s precious. Sounds like someone is jealous.

        • Holy shit, that person has issues!!! And sounds super jealous too, btw.

        • Wow – this is so bizarre!

        • I Dont Get It

If it were me I’d post pictures of me fake crying.

        • Wowwwww. And they sent this via FB, so their name/profile is attached to it?

          • justinbc

Yeah, although I couldn’t see anything on it so I assume it was just a fake profile. Unless there really is a Cheryl Beltran out there who hates me for some reason lol…who knows I probably left a bad review for her restaurant or something. I used to get crazy owner emails all the time back when I was writing prolifically.

        • Wow this person seems to know a lot about your life…which is disconcerting. Also they seem pretty unstable, I don’t think I have ever hated someone enough to send a message like that…wow.

          • I agree. That is very concerning…. although I notice they didn’t go so far as to actually make any threats. Talk about a bully…

          • justinbc

I would happily show up and meet this person to see what they have to say in person, but sadly they would not accept my offer to do so.

          • holy crap that is just insane. But also scary that this person seems to have possibly met and interacted with you IRL and knows a fair bit about you. Ick.

        • binntp

Wow…the typos and lack of capitalization alone are bad enough without even reading the words. But this made me laugh: “… i’m sure no one has had the guts to say that to you in person or online…” Whoever it is doesn’t read comments from all the Popville trolls who insult you! I’m glad you’re able to laugh it off.

          • justinbc

Haha yeah I was hoping they would see the irony in their own remarks, but I suppose not. Having the “guts” to say something online basically requires owning a keyboard. I found the height comment even more funny. I’m 5’10”, I personally know like 2 women taller than me, did they really think I would take offense to being called short?

          • Also ironic that this person criticized “your incessent [sic] talking”… but was basically making the same point over and over again.

        • Emmaleigh504

          wow, that takes the cake.

        • Whoa. That screed belongs in junior high.
People are entitled to think whatever they want about other people, but who goes around CONFRONTING people with this kind of unsolicited criticism?? And gleefully anticipating the other party being upset?? That level of schadenfreude is seriously unbecoming.
One thing I give Justin a lot of credit for — people have lobbed lots of personal attacks at him, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him respond with a personal attack.

          • “One thing I give Justin a lot of credit for β€” people have lobbed lots of personal attacks at him, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him respond with a personal attack.” +1

          • Yep, junior high is exactly what it reminded me of. Seriously, hoping/wishing his fiancee leaves him!? (although I did laugh about taking the cats part)

          • justinbc

I certainly try not to, it’s just not worth it. At the end of the day it’s all fun for me, and you have to know when you’re a bit of a snit to the populace at large and roll with it. Having said that, if anyone shows up and dumps a beer over my head at the next HH I hope you’ve all got your cameras rolling. πŸ˜‰

        • Sounds like a friend of your fiancee’s. Either a jealous guy in the “friend zone” who is pissed you’re with her or one of her girlfriends who really doesn’t like you. Regardless, yikes.

    • That is kind of terrifying. I am glad you’re handling it so well!

    • Andie302

So sorry this happened! This made me think of something from this past weekend. A friend that we were plunging with is on the board of the beach house community he lives in. A guy called him and left a voicemail that was wayyyyy over the top. We played a drinking game that was nearly impossible where every time he said the “f” word we drank. I finished an entire beer by the end of the voicemail. It was a glorious use of profanity. He was complaining about a retired nun and how the people working on her house were making a mess on HER property. It was beyond crazy, but super entertaining.

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: Mix up with my dr appointment so I sit in the waiting room for an hour.
    Rant: insurance deductible, ouch!
Rave? met deductible so now visits are el cheapo.
    Rave: slept well last night

  • Rant: Year plus of struggling with my mentally ill friend – and nothing has changed.
Rave: Spent the evening last night on the phone with three close friends who love her as much as I do. It feels good to not be struggling through this alone.
Rave: Awesome bike ride home last night after the storm passed through. And awesome bike ride this morning. Sunday I think I’m going bike shopping – cannot wait!
    Rant: Frustration at work.
Rave: Committed to a slightly more positive outlook at work with a focus on substance. Set up my standing desk and that has helped a bit too.

  • Rant (ish): Am I the only person who wants media platforms (everyone from BBC News and the New York Times to BuzzFeed and ESPN) to do LESS podcasts and videos? I do most of my media consumption on short breaks at work, and while I can definitely read an article, I can’t listen to a whole podcast or watch a video. And I also don’t have unlimited data on my cell phone plan, so I don’t stream videos or music unless I have wifi. I feel like everything these days is moving to video and podcast form and it’s harder to find straight up written articles.
Rave: Gonna be spending time with my crush this weekend 1-on-1, which is awesome because usually we spend time in a group!

    • Emmaleigh504

That bugs me too. I can’t stream at work so I want written articles to read. And as a librarian it’s annoying b/c the content won’t be easily searchable. (I’ve gotten lazy and like full text search capabilities. )

    • I feel you on your first rant! I appreciate visual media, but I prefer to read an article over watching a video. I don’t mind video or podcasting supplementing articles, but I do mind them being the only medium for a story.

    • my issue is embedded video since I’m normally on mobile devices and they crash the browser!

      • I hate this too. Embedded, auto-start videos are evil and will guarantee that I will never use your website again. They really slow down my browser. Ugh.

    • Yes! I don’t have the patience to watch most videos or listen to most podcasts. I want to read or skim. Argh.

    • Agreed — I’m always disappointed if there’s a video or audio piece with no transcript or text equivalent.

  • Rant: Not a good start to the morning. I actually left the house early for once and my bus was 15 minutes late. WMATA kept listing the bus as arriving so I didn’t want to leave. I should’ve taken the Metro. I went from being early for work to 10 minutes late.

Rave: I decided to treat myself to Coffee Bar for breakfast. Thier Cheddar Scallion scones are tasty!

  • That One Guy

Rave/Rant: Missed all the heavy rain yesterday because I was stuck at work.
Feel like eating pasta today, but where?

  • Rant: The rain last night revealed that the leaks in the front facade of our (small) condo building have not been fixed, contrary to what the builder told us and the developer.
Rave: The developer finally hired a contractor we trust to oversee the repairs being proposed by the less-than-stellar builder.
Rave: I’m so grateful that DC requires developers to grant a 2-year warranty on new and substantially-renovated construction in this town, because my pocketbook could not bear footing the bill for all these ludicrous repairs.
Rant: I just wish the builders had done this right the first time.

  • Rant: My boyfriend of 8 months broke up with me over the weekend because he’s depressed and pushing me away. I’m devastated and heartbroken.

  • Rant, though possible Rave for everyone else: My voice is all but gone, and I get completely winded from talking too long. Anyone who knows me knows just how loud and talkative I usually am, so while this is pure hell for me, I’m sure those around me are finding it quite pleasant!
Rant: Forgot to mention that the Country House did not even consider our application. As soon as I turned it in, I received an email saying they were going with the other couple. An older, retired couple for a 5/6 bedroom, 3500sf house versus a family? Yeah, ok, I get it.
Rave: Oldest Anonachild thoroughly enjoyed his birthday presents, and Littlest Anonachild thoroughly enjoyed the hipster fox t-shirt (A fox with a monocle and a bowler hat) I found him on clearance yesterday at the mall for $3.
Funny: Apparently yesterday at school, Littlest Anonachild got his shirt wet. He also apparently no long has a change of clothes (which is news to me, but that’s another mommy rant all in it’s own…) and was given an adult shirt to wear instead, and it cam down to his shins, making Littlest Anonachild look rather like a small drag queen trying to emulate a sister wife or something when I picked him up yesterday. He very calmly requested that I take him home to change before we went anywhere lol.

    • ha! I love the adventures of Littlest Anonachild!

    • “Littlest Anonachild look rather like a small drag queen trying to emulate a sister wife…” this made me laugh which set off a painful hacking coughing attack. Thanks…

  • Rant: Just as it seems that I was going to actually get a decent night of sleep, my phone decides to reboot in the middle of the night and turned off my quiet hours. Thanks Package Tracker app. I really needed to know that my shipment arrived in Landover at 3:30am.
Rave: Finally got to watch the women’s CONCACAF final. That was a good (albeit kinda dirty) game.
Rave: Before we start our next attempt at having a kid, the other Mrs. Rabbit and I have decided to take this weekend to do everything and eat everything that will be banned if it works. I know deep tissue massages, homemade eggs benedict, and perfectly medium-rare roast beef will all be on this weekend’s agenda.

    • Get those cured meats in too!!! Prosciutto… god, I miss prosciutto

      • Oh that’s a good one! I was also just thinking that smoked salmon may also have to make an appearance.

    • I would also recommend having any kind of cocktails that you enjoy. And sushi!

And maybe enjoy the sauna or steam room if that’s your thing.

      • I’m not much of a drinker these days (sort of funny for a former bartender to say that) but I think a glass of wine may be in order.

    • And cheeses! All the soft cheese!

    • Sushi and coffee/caffeinated tea, if you like those.

    • SouthwestDC

I used to be one of those people who plugged in my phone right after work and didn’t touch it the rest of the night. But now with my girlfriend halfway across the world I find myself bringing it upstairs with me, since she wakes up around the time I’m going to bed. I think it’s really disrupting my sleep, because with the phone right there I’m tempted to browse Facebook or whatever before bed. Does anyone have suggestions for minimizing screen time while still keeping the phone handy for Viber calls?

      • Not sure what phone/operating system you have, but mine (I believe comes with newest android operating system? Or perhaps it’s the phone, which is a motorola moto g) has a “do not disturb” feature where I can tell it to suppress all alerts but also tell it to allow certain contacts’ communications to come through, etc. I’m not sure if you can designate specific apps to come through or not, but perhaps something to investigate?

        • I have a Windows phone and it has that feature too. The quiet hours option allows only a limited number of calls and texts through and emergency ones can break through if they either call multiple times in a row or text a catch phrase.

  • maxwell smart

Just want to give a huge shout out to the woman on the E bus this morning that asked the driver to skip the stop I needed to get off at so that we could make the green light and get to the next stop (her stop) faster. Not only did I have to back-track to get back to the stop I wanted, I just missed my connecting bus and had to wait around for the next S9. Thanks whomever you are. Clearly wherever you were going was way more important than the presentation I needed to get done this morning which is why I left extra early.

    • Shouldn’t your rant also be directed toward the driver who complied with her request? That is, assuming you requested your stop.

    • Allison

Somewhat related, but not the bus driver’s fault, I forgot to request my stop this morning (someone else usually does it because several people tend to get off there) and by the time I had noticed we had blazed right by it. It was a limited stop rush hour bus, so I felt like a huge doofus walking 10 blocks all the way back to work.

  • Rave: Getting to catch up with grad school buddies this weekend.
Rave: Got some good sleep last night.
Rave: Had the car yesterday because of baby’s 4-mo checkup, which made getting home with the kids SO much easier last night.
Rave: Toddler is so sweet with her baby brother. Truly heart-melting. I really really hope this continues as he gets bigger and more mobile!

Query–suggestions on non-dairy cream cheese brand? And where do you find it? I believe AliceinDC (and maybe others?) said that some were pretty good but it looks like there are a few brands out there and I didn’t see any at Giant last weekend. I think I’ll start stocking my freezer with bagels especially to have a nice treat in case eggs pose a problem for the baby too.

    • I want to say it was Tofutti? But this was a few years ago. It looks like there are quite a few on the market these days.

    • Definitely check Whole Foods — I think they have several brands. I’ve only tried the Daiya and Tofutti brands and think they both taste a bit artificial. If they have the Kite Hill brand, my guess is that it would be a lot better (but also more expensive).

    • Harris Teeter had some in the tofu section of produce.

      • There’s a tofu section of produce? Interesting. I wonder if I was looking in the wrong place at Giant–perhaps it wouldn’t be with the other cream cheese there either. Thanks!

        • Check out Yes (if it’s close), they also have a tofu/vegan section.

        • I think that’s pretty standard for non-organic grocery stores that don’t carry a lot of vegan-type meat and dairy replacements. I know Safeway also has their tofu and fake meat section in the produce, next to the mushrooms. Not sure if they have other vegan products there, like cream cheese.

  • Rave: Took the day off yesterday to deal with family nonsense/extra stress. Family nonsense was handled when my mom was finally clued in as to what was going on.

Rant: Fell on my face while running to make my appointment yesterday. Face is fine, I seem to have pulled all the muscles in my neck (no bruising though) so, ow, and also super embarrassed, but, I had a great therapy appointment despite all of that so I guess it all worked out?

Rave: There’s a guy that I was over the moon for a little while ago — we’re going to see how being friends works.

Rave: Going to see the guy I’ve been dating tonight. Looking very forward to that.

Rave: One of my great friends (and ex-roommate) from NYC will be here this weekend, and I am so so so excited! We’re going to the Kennedy Center on Saturday night and the rest of the time will just be catching up. It’s super rare that my NYC friends come here so I am really happy that she’ll be here.

  • Rant: It’s almost March and the entirety of winter just decided to dump on the state of Michigan. I love the snow but I can’t drive in it and they do a surprisingly crappy job of clearing the roads.
Rave: Energizing 1.5 mile snow walk to school today. It was really peaceful.
    Rant: Time differences.
Rant: Bad texters really bother me. Hard to maintain friendships with friends who claim to hate talking on the phone and then are impossible to text.
Rave: Professor quote of the day, “I think most of you are still normal humans, it takes time to turn into a jerky attorney.” Goals?

  • goaldigger

    Rant-Caps game last night, blurgh!
Rave-Day off tomorrow and going snow tubing on Sat!!

  • Rant: my cubicle mate is on the phone asking about a payment that needs to be remitted to “Illinois” – but she’s pronouncing it “Ill-a-noise” – agh! That is so wrong it’s driving me up the freaking wall!

  • Rant: When I think about leaving my husband, I realize I would have to be a single parent and the financial and emotional reality is more unappealing than marriage
Rant: I wouldn’t want to take the kids with me
Rave: Yesterday’s storm was very impressive
Rave: Lots of work to keep me busy

    • It sounds like, at the very least, you need someone to talk to. I hope you can find some support as you struggle with this stage of parenting & family life, regardless of the path you decide to take. Also hope you can carve out some time for yourself that might help you feel better cared for.

    • Is it that you don’t want to take them with you because you don’t actually want them, or because you feel like you would be overwhelmed?
If it’s that you don’t actually want them for whatever reason, trust me, they already know that. If this is the case, please get some counseling for yourself and be honest with your counselor about this. My ex did not want our kids, and he is only just now becoming a better dad because of spending years working through that issue.

  • Rave: I took on a project at work, it’s not really hard, but it’s cool and I get to fiddle around with neat data, and it’s done. I’m really excited and proud.
Rave/rant: I read the cover story of the NY Mag and I loved it, but it also made me cry a lot. It put into words a lot of things I had been feeling about being a single woman in this generation.
Hilarity: DOG was so excited when I got home. I put on his leash and harness and his rain coat and he proceeded to lay down and look sad. That’s as far as the evening walk went.

  • Rant – Can’t even rely on the red line to get me to my doctor’s appointment on time this morning. Ended up spending more money than anticipated on Uber. Grrr.
Rave – Doc’s appointment went well. I’m so grateful for my health.

  • RANT: The person on the 4th floor of my condo building who is just downright AWFUL at cooking but doing a GREAT job at trying to burn our condo building to the ground. Thanks for the 11:45 pm wake-up call, carrying a dog up and down a flight of stairs, and the mere 4 hours of sleep I managed to get.
Rave: Almost done with the monkey-on-my-back project at work.
Rant: Office mate at work is having a really crappy time with his micromanaging boss. It makes me feel badly about how great my supervisor is, almost. Any advice/help I can give him? He’s already tried talking to the manager’s supervisor (got nowhere) and is planning on talking to our govt union rep.
Rave: Feels like Wednesday, but is, in fact, Thursday πŸ™‚

Rant: I have a bad cold and am staying home from work today. Oh wait, I work from home now. This new world is so confusing!
Rant: Our director has asked that we make our Outlook calendars viewable to her. Is this a new thing?
Rave: The only thing making happy today is the YouTube video β€œThe Sound of Gaga by the Cast of the Sound of Music”. Amazing production values using the same costumes and sets from a touring production of TSOM. β€œBad Romance” FTW!

    • Everyone in my group can view each other’s Outlook calendars. There is an option in an appointment to make it private if you need people to not know what’s going on. If it’s an appointment for a doctor I usually just put “Doc Appt” and don’t care that people can see it, but some people are more sensitive.

      • Allison

All the staff at my place have their outlook calendars be viewable to management. Only management has private calendars (so we can’t see the appointment to “fire joe bob.”). I make my calendar viewable to everyone because I don’t really care what my clients see.

    Rave: Everyone was okay.

  • Rave: Acupuncture. Don’t know if it works as I’ve only been going a few weeks, but if anything it gives me an hour of forced rest, no distractions. Also, love how drastically needle placement can vary. Lots of needles today, including quite a few in my ear. I always imagine how I must look laying there.
Rant/Rave: Apparently I missed an amazing rainbow??
Rave: Season 3 of the Americans is finally free on Prime. Binge watching is probably inevitable.

  • Rant: Trying to explain to customer service rep that when I say Washington DC that I do NOT mean Washington state. Really, I don’t want to schedule something in Washington state because I do not live there. No, I live in Washington DC – you know, the capital of the US – not the state of Washington.
Rant: Can’t slam the receiver on a cellphone
    Rant: Headache
Rave: My pup was especially snuggly this morning

    • LOL on rant #2!
Sorry to hear about the headache.

    • LOL, people get so tripped up on Washington, DC. When we moved up here and drove across the border the agents were like, “Wow, you drove here all the way from Washington state?!” Noooo, just from Washington, DC…you know about 8 hours south of here!

    • I Dont Get It

Yes you can slam the receiver on a cell phone. Once.

    • I got carded at a liquor store in Maryland. I show the guy my DL.
Guy: “Oh, Columbia? You speak Spanish?”
Me: “No. Columbia as in District of Columbia. You know Washington, DC?”
Guy: “oh, on the West Coast? Washington State?….. where’s the birth date on this thing?”
      Me: “…”
      Me: ” There, see?”
Guy: ” oh! Si! So you do speak Spanish!”
Oh just give me my goddamn liquor already!

      • I had a similar Columbia interaction…except it was with TSA. I could not understand how oblivious this person was…you know the seat of the federal government i.e. who pays your paycheck?

      • This happened to me in Hawaii. Our server thought we were Canadian, so I assume she thought, “British Columbia.” No, no… just, you know, the capital of this fair country of ours.

    • Haha IDGI!
And anonamom I’d want to hang up on your liquor store clerk

As a person who moved here from New Mexico, I see your rant and raise you ” wow, you speak really good English.”

  • Rant: I can’t find a brand name anywhere on the toilet I was writing about the other day (re. leaking with recently replaced flapper — http://www.popville.com/2016/02/random-reader-rant-andor-revel-1512/#comment-1092123 ). I can find a date of manufacture, the words “Tank 3412,” and “Hecho en Mexico.” When I google “Tank 3412,” it comes up with results for Vortens, a brand I’ve never heard of.
I guess just because I don’t recognize the name doesn’t mean that the toilet isn’t actually Vortens. But it’s discouraging because my recollection is that some toilet companies make flappers specifically for their toilets, and I was hoping that would be the case with this one.

    • That One Guy

I was forever changing flappers in my bathrooms and finally replaced all the internal parts in the two main bathrooms that see the most use. It’s worth the hassle and relatively easy to do. Visit you local hardware store or big box retailer for parts.

      • I was going to say the same thing. The issue is probably not that your flapper doesn’t work with your tank–more likely it’s that the flapper won’t work with the other stuff its connected to. You can get a kit and replace everything, thought that will require you to unbolt the tank from the bowl.

    • Allison

It sounds like we need to organize a PoPville trip to Mexico. We will visit all the deserted towns, and as tumbleweeds roll in the background, we will saunter into the local cerveceria and slam the toilet flapper down on the bar and say with squinty eyes, “dice ‘hecho en Mexico.’ Conoces dondo? DAME LA INFORMACION!!!!”

    • HaileUnlikely

Vortens is a brand that makes toilets. I’d either give them a call, or else browse their website and see if I could identify the specific toilet. FWIW, when looking for a replacement fill valve for my toilet (made by Toto), I read on a reputable plumbing website that the parts used in most of the major brands of toilets available in the US are made by either Korky or Fluidmaster and just re-branded as Toto/Kohler/American Standard/whatever. If the toilet manufacturer couldn’t tell me what specific one to get, I’d just go on the Korky website and play with the “Product Selector Tool” until hopefully results converged on something.

Posted in wrong place, intended to be in reply to message right below this one (textdoc RE toilet replacement parts)

Question for the Populace: I’ve been thinking a lot lately about moving in with BF (in a year, when my lease is up). He initially brought it up, but it felt too early on in the relationship, so I tabled the discussion. Now it seems like something I really want, though. Should I bring it up or give it more time? We’ve been together 6 months which I know isn’t that long – I think we are past the honeymoon stage but maybe not? It’s a big step I’ve never taken with anyone before, so there would be a lot to process and consider. If he hadn’t mentioned it first I probably would wait until it’s been closer to a year, but since he did…thoughts?

    • So… it wouldn’t be for a year anyway? Or would your sublet your place or have him move in?
In my personal experience, my BF was asking me to move in after 4 months. I said no. Then I wanted to move in (a little over the year mark) and he said no. Then he wanted me to move in, and I said no… lol, you can see our pattern. For us the first time I wasn’t ready, the second time he realized he wasn’t ready (and admitted he wasn’t when he asked, and also apologized for putting the thought in my head at that point), and then the other times it was down to logistics. It was hard for me once I got to the ready stage to know that he wasn’t there yet even though he was the first one to suggest it and was the one who planted the seed to begin with. So I would caution you to tread lightly and be prepared for that. But, it could go the other way too. At any rate, I think it’s a good conversation to start having.

    • For what it’s worth… I think Carolyn Hax says the honeymoon stage is usually two years long.

    • what’s the harm in bringing it up? 1) he already brought it up. and 2) the timing sounds totally reasonable. I “officially” (like, signed a lease and moved into a new apartment) moved in with my boyfriend after 10 months, but we started talking about it after 4-5 months because we spent so much time together anyway. I had never lived with a partner before, so it was kind of scary, but it also felt right. That was a little over a year ago and we just re-signed our least last month! it sounds like your instincts are telling you that you’re ready at least for the conversation, so start there and see where it takes you. I feel like there’s not much risk here, too, because you’re hypothetical move-in date isn’t until 2017.

      • topscallop

Thanks for the good advice everyone! It definitely wouldn’t be until early 2017, so there is plenty of time, but I think I will see if he wants to start talking about it just because the idea of it is so front-and-center in my mind.

  • RANT: The painted lane dividing lines on 14th Street NW twixt U and Euclid are just about invisible. Can’t tell what the heck lane I am in. Who do I contact to have the lines freshened up? In the meantime, cross your fingers.
