You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • That cat and I share the same mood. I feel you cranky cat!

Rave: Wonderful time at Unofficial Popville Happy Hour last night! Good seeing everyone, and Colony Club was super hospitable. Nice end of the year gathering. Look forward to next month’s gathering, and starting up the brunch group again!

Rant: The whole flood apt/housing situation is causing me too much stress. Can I just end the year on a positive note?

  • Revel: had a great time seeing everybody at happy hour last night!
    Rant: still sleepy/lethargic this morning
Rant: forgot to take the trash out last night, for the second week in a row

  • One more rant: every single part of my body is sore. I’m taking today off.

  • I think that cat wants to eat my soul.
Rant: As always, ending the year grumpy AF.
Rant: My office will not be closing early. I have to go at lunch to buy shoes for tonight. I have no clue how to wear my hair or makeup. A dive bar and slightly warm beer is looking pretty damn awesome right now.
    Rave: Kids come back Saturday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • rave: get out 3 hours early.
rant: tore my bedroom apart last night. It’s so small and I cant stand it, so I am starting over. I need to try and love it. somehow.
    rave: new year.
rant: new year, new problems. lmao

  • Rave! The babies arrived yesterday! Mama and little ones are all doing great even though the little ones came way ahead of schedule at 33 weeks. I’m still in hibernation mode, but couldn’t wait to share the happy news with you all!

  • Rave: Wonderful time at HH last night. Shout out to the owner (I wanna say Max?) for welcoming us. It was great to be surrounded by friends on a drizzly night after a drizzly, craptastic day.
Rant: I am so. tired. I couldn’t really wind down until 12:30 last night, and then my neighbor (who I usually don’t hear at all) was having some sort of gathering until at least 1, and damn, I felt like my walls were suuuper thin. Just because you have the day off today doesn’t mean that everyone else does, so please be more mindful of the noise you’re making! Grrrr.
Rave: Excited to hang out with my further-down neighbors and see what kind of fun, ridiculous games we play this time.
Rant: I really wish we were closing early, but I have so much I need to hurry up and get done, it’s probably a good thing we aren’t.

Rant: As tradition has it, a family member has fallen ill this new years. It seems I drew the short straw.
Rave: At least the office is closing early and I can go home and nap until the concert and then get my butt in a taxi home at 12:01 to continue sleeping.
Rant: I have too much to do at home and at work to be sick. I’ve gotta kick this thing this weekend.

  • Rant: At work today. πŸ™
Rave: There are only a few of us, and we’re all on about the same level, so I’m in jeans and mostly just reading. The office also closes early at least.
Rant: Not having much to do this week makes me nervous, because I’m sure it’s going to get crazy again soon. I’ve been going through old files and teaching myself how to use Raiser’s Edge the last couple of weeks, can’t think of much else to do.
Rave: Going to a friends’ place for NYE tonight. She’s cooking Japanese food, om nom nom!
Rant: I think it’s mostly couples going. I shall kiss the champagne bottle at midnight.

Rave: Last night’s happy hour was great, and Colony Club was very welcoming
Rave: Sneaking out at 2 to head to Philly for New Years
Rant: Desperately needing some time to myself– I wouldnt mind staying home with Kitty for New Years…
Rave: I’m somewhat optimistic about the new year. Doing a new diet- another boot camp- therapy- and some serious budgeting. Time to get body, mind, and wallet healthy again.

  • Rave: Went to Kinship Tuesday night. A truly wonderful meal at a fairly reasonable price. Even my non-gourmand girlfriend was impressed, worrying by the end of the meal that DC would not support a restaurant of that caliber.
    .
Rave: Made it to the weight room and thus closed the year by going two solid months without missing a weight or rowing machine workout, and unprecedented off-season achievement. I assume the streak is doomed, but we’ll see how long we can play it out.

    • It sounds amazing! Sticker shock aside, looking at the menu online is a little confusing, though. Are all the items on the top part with crazy headings like “craft,” “history” and “ingredients” appetizers or are they intended to be small plates for sharing?

      • I think, if you stay away from the “indulgences” (and the whole foie gras) the price is extremely reasonable — comparable to Table or Mintwood Place but far better (IMHO) food. I agree that the menu is confusing and a little too twee for my tatste, but it is what it is. As you read down each column, the first couple plates are more or less appetizers — larger than a small plate, but not immense — the next couple could be considered modestly sized main courses, and then there’s a dessert. Think in terms of two courses and a shared dessert for most women (that I know, anyway) and some guys, maybe three and a dessert for us especially manly πŸ™‚ dudes and you’ll have a feel for the portions. Of course you can share, but it doesn’t seem to present itself as a tapas place.

Rant: I’m so bored! I have very little to do right now at work, and there are literally two other people in the office with me. At least we get to leave early.
Rave: so glad to have tomorrow off and no roommates in the house! I love them but I’m excited to have the place to myself. Depending how hungover I am maybe I’ll make brunch for the BF, or we’ll get Thai takeout assuming any place is open.
Rave: nice dinner last night with friends, though I was sorry to miss the happy hour
Rant: two books I’ve requested from the library should be waiting for me by now. I’m number 1 in the queue, where are they?!

    • I put a hold on the book for January’s book club over a month ago. It didn’t arrive until yesterday, and it said I was number 1 in the queue the whole time. And there were multiple copies! I don’t understand how that happened.

      • I’ve also been #1 on the waitlist for that book for weeks now; may not get to read it before Jan 12th.

      • “I don’t understand how that happened.”
        .
The library can’t give you the book until it is returned by the current holder, so you have to wait until that person returns it. And there’s no penalty for late returns, so the current holder just keeps it until they’re done regardless of the due date or the fact that you have a hold on it.

        • No sh*t, Sherlock. However, USUALLY when there are multiple copies of a book and you’re #1 in the holds queue, it doesn’t take that long for it to show up. (I put holds on books pretty frequently.)

          • OK, thanks for that lovely response. Maybe don’t say you don’t understand something if you actually do.

          • Given your propensity for contradicting PoPville readers in the snarkiest way possible, it’s surprising you don’t get more “lovely” responses on a regular basis.
            .
It seems unlikely to me that all four (IIRC) people with the book checked out would choose to keep it past its due date. So I’m wondering if there was something else going on — say, the hold is linked to _one particular copy_ of the book, and thus the system keeps waiting for that one particular copy to be returned. If so, that seems like a fault in the hold system; it ought to be poised to snap up whichever copy comes in first.

          • lol… Textdoc, I just wanted to say how much I respect you.

        • topscallop

I didn’t know there was no penalty for late returns. I’ve been returning books even if I wasn’t done with them because there were holds and I couldn’t renew them!
          .
On the DC library site you can see which branches have copies and whether they are checked out, available, or in transit between branches. So maybe copies of the books I requested are among the latter, and are on their way to my branch. It’s odd though because there are no other holds on them and many copies available. I just want to be able to binge-read some YA fiction recommended by some end-of-the-year list I read on some blog I can’t even remember, under a pile of blankets this weekend! While polishing off all the chocolate in my house so I can get started on being healthy next week πŸ™‚

          • As AE points out, there are late fees (at least according to their website) but they’re not much incentive even if you know about them.

      • Late fees for overdue books = penalty

        • You’ve got a lot of leeway before you accrue enough late fees for it to affect your borrowing priveleges. If you’re 19 or younger, no fees. The penalty is too small to be a much more effective incentive than your own personal sense of fairness and decency.

          • I think you get at least a month of leeway and even after that you’re only charged a few cents. I’ve been late returning books out of sheer laziness because there’s not any incentive to do so (although I do make it a point to quickly return those that have holds).

I bought it on my kindle but I have been putting off reading it…. something about the cover is offputting. but, it looks like a quick read!

      • What book is the book club reading?

  • Rant: Bossman emailed the entire team (minus me) last night to tell them they can take the day off today. He and I have been having issues, and he’s been singling me out to try to get me to quit
Rave; leaving at noon, because I feel like it.

  • I Dont Get It

Rave: Down the YouTube rabbit hole but in a good way. I was trying to determine what all the excitement was for “Hamilton” and realized that Lin-Manuel Miranda who wrote the plot, music and lyrics and plays Alexander Hamilton was featured in an amazing YouTube video where with his new father-in-law led his real life wedding party in a serenade to his bride with a rousing rendition of “To Life” from “Fiddler on the Roof”. Look for “To Life: Vanessa’s Wedding Surprise” if you need a fun, life affirming video to end 2015!

Rave: Glad 2015 is almost over. Not the best year!

  • Rant: 2015 blew.

Rave: It’s almost over. Maybe 2016 will be better?

  • Rant: with the last week and a half off, I’ve been spending a lot of money I wouldn’t have otherwise spent. January will be a very lean month.

  • Rant: Interviewing around the holidays as a generally impatient person.
Rave: I’ll work on that this year. Maybe.
Rave: My dad LOVES Tiny Dog. I got him a yorkie mug for Christmas as kind of a joke gift and he loves using that thing.
Rant: I’ve been home since the 18th which has included a lot of unpacking for my parents, a handful of interviews, two trips to NY, three Dr appointments, and lots of catching up with friends. I hope I can be a lazy hermit for the next week. Getting dressed up to go out tonight seems like a lot of effort.

  • Rave: Last night’s unofficial PoPville happy hour at Colony Club. Thanks for organizing, skj84!
    Rave: Early dismissal today!
    Rave: In a good mood.

  • Rant: Having to go to a NYE party hosted by someone I barely know, with invitees I don’t know, who are probably all a couple decades older than me. Oh, and it’s in Vienna.

    • Sounds like a good night to stay home, esp. the vienna part

      • That’s what my wife and I wanted to do, and we assumed the host (a friend of my brother-in-law) was just inviting us to be polite. But the brother-in-law says he desperately wants us to come, and isn’t giving us a choice in the matter.

        • I Dont Get It

You aren’t coming down with something are you? Are you SURE you don’t have a temperature.

          • I think they still sell Ipecac!!

          • Lol! I honestly do find it bizarre that this person would expect us to come to his party in Vienna. But he did us a favor recently so I guess this is our way of returning it. I’m trying to see this as an opportunity to practice my small talk (and later my driving skills as I dodge drunk drivers on the way home). But I’m still not looking forward to it at all.

    • Jesus Christ. I would rather curl up with some Ben and Jerry’s and a bottle of wine than go to Vienna. Actually, I would rather curl up with freezer burnt ice kreem from the dollar store and a Busch Light than go to Vienna.

  • Rant: My girlfriend and I were thinking of doing something low-key this year, and I suggested my childhood tradition of seeing a movie on NYE. It sounded perfect, especially since we had a few (The Danish Girl, Carol) on our list. BUT I assumed all the theaters would be open late this year. I just looked it up and apparently the indie ones are closing early and everything at the mainstream theaters looks awful.
Any suggestions for something we could do instead? We’ve been at home watching Netflix every night this week so I’d like to do something a little different.

  • I think we need a new PoPville feature – “onerous trips to the distant suburbs.”
