A reader reported just around 12:15pm:

“Just thought you might want to know, looks like people are already camping out in front of the Uptown.”

I couldn’t believe it but I remember when the Star Wars film came out in 1999 and I was living a few blocks away from the Uptown at that time and one night I came stumbling walking home around 3am and there was this massive line outside my building. The building was a full two blocks away from the Theatre mind you and I was like “what the shit is this?”. And then because I was young and a total jerk I charged somebody waiting in line $20 to use my bathroom. I’ve been wracked with guilt over that ever since. I feel better now, thank you. Anyway I digress.

And so the circle of Star Wars films continues:

But I gotta respect David Casterline from Fairfax, VA – he brought a barcalounger and he got it for free off craigslist! Well done – and you picked the right weather for it!

  • I can’t even.

  • I’ve never understood the logistics of this. Do they not have jobs or do they just blow their leave on this? Families? School obligations? Do they go home for storms or extreme weather?

I’m genuinely confused, not trying to be snarky.

    • Also curious about the logistics of this and not trying to be cynical.

      • I think the sleeping part is what confuses me most. especially considering this guy is on his ipad or something…what do you do with that stuff?

    • I imagine if you are that fanatical about Star Wars to get in line a week before opening, you probably had the time to save up some leave in order to facilitate that line-sitting time. And don’t have a wife or kids to worry about… Plus, this is the land of the govt worker we’re talking about here. Half my base is empty right now because everyone has more than 240 hours of leave, so they are forced to burn a few weeks at the end of the year.

    • It looks like there’s a group of them taking shifts – one chair for each person on the team. Some folks have AWS on a Friday or Monday, so no need to take leave there. I’m sure they’ve figured out a way to divvy up the responsibilities. That said, it’s supposed to rain like crazy all day on Monday. Miserable.

    • So it’s not the same thing, but I was between jobs during a humanitarian crisis once. If I had been employed, I would not have been able to travel and volunteer. But I wasn’t working, so I took the chance to do a thing I wouldn’t normally do. Maybe this is the same deal, where the stars align to do something out of the ordinary.

I don’t think “respect” is the word I’d use to describe this person.

  • Now that’s dedication. I might stop by and bring this guy a sandwich this weekend.

In my Donald Trump voice—-“he’s a loser.” J/K sort of

  • or just go to a theatre with assigned seats…

  • I hope the movie sucks, just to spite people like this.

I’m a little disappointed that Star Wars will preclude Quentin Tarantino’s new film from showing at the Uptown. Filmed in an old ultrawide-screen format on 70mm film stock, it would’ve been perfect for that massive screen.

    • yea., i too am upset I cant see a hack director rehash old movies because another movie that rehashes an older movie is playing there instead!

  • I really can’t believe the hate this guy is getting. We all have our weird hobbies and neuroses, but because this guy’s is different than yours, you want to spite him and make him miserable? I hope he has good weather and the movie’s awesome.

    • Agreed. Funny thing. I actually bought a dartboard off of him today. We’d actually arranged the purchase on Craigslist a few days before. David was a nice guy. He and the guys he is doing this thing with like what they like and are making a little adventure out of it. Odds are it will be awkward at times but they’re probably going to have a lot of fun doing this thing. It will no doubt be a crazy story to tell for the rest of their lives. Hopefully they stay warm, safe, and enjoy the hell out of the movie.

+1, partly because I live in this city and good weather affects all of us, and I plan to spend some of my own money watching it too. He’s not on an island of enjoyment people.

  • I don’t hate this guy or even judge him for doing this, but I just don’t understand it. They sold tickets for the shows online, so what is the reason to be first and get there so so so far in advance? As long as you’re in the first 50 or 100 people, you will still get a prime seat. Seems like he could have waited until at least Monday or Tuesday, if not later.

We went by last night for dinner and a film crew was there interviewing one of the guys (this guy was gone, his shift must have ended). Maybe they also enjoy the free publicity? As one person said this guy is a photographer, so if it gets people to Google his name and they like his work that’s rarely a bad thing.

    • Yeah, I agree with this. I think it’s kinda sillyto waste this much time to see something that you will literally be able to view forever, but hey, if he’s got the time and desire, more power to him. He’d probably think my dinner at the French Laundry was a ridiculous waste of money. To each his own.

  • The Triumph The Insult Comic Dog bit where he visited a line for Attack of the Clones is to this day, one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. The entire video is still up on YouTube.

    • yes — more entertaining than all the Star Wars films combined

just the interview with the expectant mother alone priceless

  • Wait… this is for Thursday OF NEXT WEEK?

  • when are the tickets available online? What happens if by the time your turn comes the tickets are sold out for that day?

    • Tickets went on sale over a month ago.

    • This group must have their tickets already and are angling for a good seat. I agree with the above, though, that there’s enough good seats to not go to this extreme, particularly at Uptown.

  • I hope that guy is prepared to dispose of the Barcalounger properly after it becomes rain-sodden, and isn’t just going to abandon it on the sidewalk for it to become DPW’s problem.

  • SouthwestDC

Well… it does sound marginally more enjoyable than being in Fairfax…

  • Ballston/Courthouse AMC…book your seat online weeks ahead AND they recline. Why wait outside for 6 days. Weird.

  • The guy is just having fun. Good for him and to his credit – Uptown is a great choice and the weather is amazing (for December). Live your life dude!

  • He’s gonna look a lot less cheery by Wednesday.
