Christmas volunteering?

“Dear PoPville,

I’m going to be in DC over Christmas this year, as I have done for several years. I do dinner with an uncle in Maryland on Christmas Eve and spend Christmas Day alone in the quiet. This year my job changed and I haven’t had time to volunteer weekly as I had done since moving to DC, so I’d like to spend the day volunteering. Any suggestions of where volunteers are needed on Christmas Day?”

  • Food and Friends does meal delivery to people on Thanksgiving and I think they do the same on Christmas Day. I’ve done that in the past, they probably have a meal prep shift that you could volunteer for as well.

DC Jewish Community Center also does a day of service on the 25th. Volunteers spend 2-4 hours serving meals, visiting senior citizens, and throwing holiday parties.

  • If you can get a group together, and you like to cook, you can be a guest chef a Ronald McDonald House. My coworkers did a shift on a random Friday, and had a lot of fun.

  • The DC JCC coordinates a huge volunteer effort for christmas–the options are posted on their website and fill up quickly. You don’t have to be Jewish to participate.

  • DC Central Kitchen is a great organization! They would most likely have you do meal prep in the kitchen and it doesn’t require volunteering with a group
