You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • Rant: PD day where we’re watching presenters on a projected in many rooms in 16 different locations throughout the county. Hard to stay focused on this.
Rant: Shuttle bus from one site to another. Not so bad this morning but I expect it will be messy in the afternoon.
Rant: Went way over my WW daily points the past few days. I have a few weekly points left, but I need to get my butt moving!

    • Activity points!!

      • Ugh, I’m embarrassed I don’t have too many of those, but at least it will be enough to get me through the rest of the week. Next week *will* be better.

        • Yeah, I know what you mean…. since I changed jobs and no longer walk a few miles every day, I have had trouble. My activity level has plummeted so much (I was averaging 10,000 steps a day, now I’m lucky to get 5,000) that I have stuck to my points and still gained.

          • Yeah, I’m hovering around 8,000-9,000 a day. I work in a pretty large school (it’s about a block or so from our classroom to the playground and we go up and down a lot of stairs), but I still drive to work and have been too tired to do anything physical after I get home. Graze.com and WW can only do so much, I’m thinking.

          • I think it is really great at teaching you how to eat better if that is an issue for someone. When I first started WW years ago (I’ve been on and off for a while), it really helped, and over the course of two years I lost about 40 lbs because of what I learned on WW. But once you get the whole healthy eating thing, you have to at some point work harder to lose. That’s where I am. And I’m just too busy and lazy to do much.

  • rave: love reading rants/raves on a friday morning
rave: moving to a new office suite w/in our building
rant: even less (zero) natural light
rave: plenty of space and a great layout.
    rave: i’m getting an office… so…
rave: … i can read more popville.

    • Now that is a winning combination!!!

    • Yay for new office, boo for no natural light. My office is in the middle of a floor so I have zero windows also. It sucks but having that space to yourself is worth it.

      • do you work longer hours because you have no natural concept of time? do you miss the sun? we’re thinking about investing in some serious lighting that would keep us from turning into vampires and/or falling asleep. we might as well be a in a basement.

        • Haha funny you ask, I do end up working a lot later than I used to (though I then use that as comp time and take a random day off or do a string of 6 or 7 hour days). Working later doesn’t bother me like it used to when I had a window office which is really nice on days I need to work later.

        • I had a windowless office and did okay with time. I did miss the sun and made an effort to go outside for coffee/lunch/a walk every day.

  • Rant: Did not check my e-mail when the alarm went off at 4:30 thi morning and thus did not find out that practice had been cancelled sometime after I went to sleep until I was already standing on the dock, in the dark, in the rain.

Rave: Working at home so I can open all the windows and the house is starting to smell like Autumn Rain which is, coincidentally, the same scent as my laundry detergent.

    • Oh jeez. Awful! Dark + rain + early + didn’t have to be there anyway… pain! Hope you had some kind of warmish drink to make up for it.

      • A have a date with a friend, who also didn’t get boated for the Head of the Charles and who also did not check her e-mail, to drink rye and commiserate, but in a fit of common sense we decided that 5 AM (we stayed to do a little weather-proofing) on a work day was not an appropriate time. So I went home and tried to warm up against my girlfriend’s bottom, which did not please her at all.

  • Rave: Bad Saint–ate there for my birthday last night and it was SOOOO good!! Cool space too.
Rave: MS MR at 9:30 club! They were amazing.
Rave: Counting down the days until my last day at work and then honeymoon!!!

  • Rant: Sore throat.
Rant: Husband’s last day at the office.
Rave: Celebrated last night at Norah’s – so incredibly good!
Rave: He starts his new job on Monday – in NYC!
    Rant: Moving in hurricane.

    • Nora’s?!?! I had no idea that was still around. Did you take a Delorean equipped with a Flux Capacitor ™ to get there?

      • Nora’s is still wonderful. It’s a DC classic!

        • Yup – it was fantastic. We’re not hip or anything but love great food, and Nora’s delivered. πŸ™‚

          • My last 2 experiences at Nora’s (both more than 15 years ago) were less than satisfactory, so I wrote it off and forgot about it. Maybe it’s time to give it a try again.

    • Nora’s — I got fired from there in 1986. Still went back for dinner a couple times, though (It’s just business, Irving”). A lot of good DC chefs have passed through Nora’s kitchen, but it’s earned a reputation for inconsistency over the years.

Rant: My doctor told me I need to fly business (be able to elevate my legs) during my upcoming international flights and I am reeeeally not looking forward to the battle that will be trying to make that happen at work. I feel almost positive that my agency isn’t going to go for it. Sigh.

    • phl2dc

What if you have a doctor’s note?

      • mtpgal

I have one but I’ve seen them deny people even with a note. I’m in favor of using resources responsibly but there has to be a balance, right?

        • phl2dc

That’s crazy! If it affects your health and well-being an employer should abide by the note, IMO. I hope it works out in your favor.

          • I can see why it is problematic – all of a sudden, you have every business traveler coming in with a doctor’s note stating that coach travel is unacceptable.

          • phl2dc

I think that unless you have a legit health concern the doc shouldn’t give you a note… but yeah, I see that, and I know that some docs are a little too note-happy…

    • Is this because of deep vein thrombosis? My mother was diagnosed with that and the doctor told her the it didn’t matter how much room she had in the seat. She could sit in first class, it wouldn’t matter, what mattered was regularly moving your legs, and walking was the preferred option.

Can’t you just get up every 30 minutes or so and take a quick walk up and down the aisle?

    • This would be ripe for abuse. Business class seats will easily be 4-5x more expensive than coach. In this era of lean budgets and accounting for every dollar, I can’t see this happening. But good luck.

Rave: I see The Martian (i.e. Brad Pitt: Heartthrob in Space, Brad Pitt: Doing Science in Space) tonight
Rant/Rave: OKCupid is a different place for women at age 30-something than age 20-something

Question: What are the best online dating sites? Tried POF, have not been getting ‘catching’ anything good and the user interface is just horrid… went to Blendr and immediately saw my ex with no apparent way to hide/block him… afraid of Tinder because of the casual sex reputation. Thoughts?

    • Brad Pitt is in that? I thought it was Matt Damon?

    • Im still a bit embarrassed to admit, but I met my bf on tinder (he was the first and only person I met on the site

      • lol…. I also met my BF on Tinder. He’s embarrassed by that more than I am.

        • Anonomnom

Could be far worse… I met my now-husband on gay.com… We made up a fake story for the first three years of our relationship!

          • lol…. I think it’s just a modern romance! I mean, honestly, a hook up that turns into a love story? I think it’s sweet!

      • I met my GF on Tinder. Didn’t “hook up” until a few dates in. It’s not completely sleazy….. πŸ˜‰

    • I use okcupid, Tinder, and Hinge. Hinge is like a less sketchy, less hook-up oriented tinder (it’s mostly third degree connections through facebook friends) and I’ve found it has more attractive people. Honestly though, Tinder is what you make of it – there are a lot of people using it for dating, not just hook-ups now, since so many people are on it and it’s not much of a time investment. I have a number of friends who started relationships with people they met on Tinder, and I’ve gone on pretty normal dates with people from it.

      • OK, cool — I should take a look then. I guess you shouldn’t believe everything you read in the NYTimes Style Section… πŸ˜‰

        • Yeah. I mean, plenty of guys are just looking for hookups. But it’s still worth a try, it doesn’t really waste much time and you can generally get a good feel for if a guy is just looking for a hookup if you chat a bit.
Also, Bumble is another one – this one is like Tinder, except than only the woman can initiate conversations. Both people have to swipe right, then the woman has 24 hours to send the guy a message. I haven’t used this one too much, but it’s another option.

      • Is there any way to indicate that you’re not available for a hook-up? Or do you just leave it ambiguous and hope for the best?

      • Agree with your analysis.
Hinge is definitely a bit older, better educated, higher SES, and more attractive than Tinder, IMHO. It tends to attract white collar, urban professionals.
Both male and female friends have said good things to me about Bumble. Women like it and are more comfortable because they have to initiate contact – they like that sense of control.

        • I tried Hinge one time (still no Bumble for android) and the first two people I saw were a classmate and a co-worker. So I quit immediately and never looked back. Ugh.

          • So? You don’t need to talk to either, unless you marked that you “like” them.
You will eventually stumble across an acquaintance on every online dating platform. I don’t see why you should rule it out.

          • I did OkCupid on and off for two years and have only seen one or two acquaintances ever. Perhaps I just don’t match with any of them. Haha.

Rant: Not feeling optimistic about the city due to the crime/violence from the past few months.
    Rave: FRIDAY.
Rant: This crappy weather. I’m enjoying the cooler temps but this rain…
Rave: Cowbell Kitchen makes some fantastic baked goods!
Rant: The farmers market that I go to, where Cowbell Kitchen camps out weekly, closes at the end of this month (until the Spring).
Rave: It’s not the end of the month yet!

  • Rant/Rave? This weather. I kind of hate it and love it at the same time. Perfect weather for hibernating all weekend long with some tea, books, wine, etc. Getting out of bed this morning was torture, though, because i left my window open a crack and the room was so cold! Haven’t been able to shake the chill yet. Wearing a wool blazer and scarf, which are both cute and I love, but I’m still cold,
Rant: My coffee tastes funny today.
Rave: Glad I made myself go to yoga last night even though I was tempted to hole up and wallow in my frustration. Actually nailed a couple poses that I thought would take several more months to develop!
Rant: Gotta try again with the billing people from my surprise medical bill. I’m not accepting “No, we can’t take you out of collections” for an answer. It’s their fault, they’re going to make it up to me.

Rant: I love my job, but so much work stress right now. Things will get a little better toward the end of next week, but we’re understaffed and will be really crunched until at least mid-Nov.
Rant: Trying to work at home and also keep an eye on the pup.

    • Quotia Zelda

Emily’s dream reminded me of mine – I dreamt that Eldest Zelda went to a Republican debate and asked them a hard-hitting question about healthcare. I only found out about it because she was featured in the news – a cute young girl with candy-colored hair asks the candidates a tough question! The debate was in Atlanta, and I remember thinking in my dream – but I was just talking to her (we did talk just before I went to bed) and it takes HOURS to get to Atlanta.

  • I Dont Get It

Rave: WDS, in lieu of looking for a job today, is spending day #2 “hurricane proofing” the house. He’s putting all of his electronics in plastic bins and doesn’t understand why I’m not compelled to do the same. #WeatherPorn #DramaQueen
Rave: Making a pot of chicken soup today. Seems perfect for the weather!
Rave: Working from home and still in my baby blue cowboy pajamas. I look like Blake Shelton’s taller, more buff although somewhat infantile younger brother.

    • I love your daily descriptions of what you’re wearing and who you resemble – never fails to make me laugh!

    • Does he know that Joaquin is spinning off into the Atlantic and won’t even touch land in the US?

    • I Dont Get It

So just a few minutes ago WDS ran downstairs yelling that there is water everywhere coming in on top of his irreplaceable video games. I came up to the third floor and did not see any water, although I don’t doubt that there was a drop or two. There are two places on the third floor where sometimes some water comes through AS EVIDENCED BY THE WATER STAIN IN THE CEILING AND SOME DRYWALL DAMAGE! Despite those obvious clues, and he’s lived up there for almost a year, he had stacked his video games near there. Anyway he is in a complete panic and you would think the simple solution is just to move his stuff but since he has so much stuff up there this is not an easy task. He has a therapy appointment in a few minutes and then he leaves for Virginia for the weekend thank goodness. I can’t take the drama!

  • Rant: Yesterday’s shooting in Oregon. Thinking of the victims and their families. Will we ever be safe anywhere anymore?
Rant: The weather today and predicted for this weekend.
Rave: I’ve got my health, a good job and the government shutdown was averted (for now anyway).
Rave: Fall has started. It’s my favorite season. From the changing colors of the leaves to the clothes to the college football on TV I love it.

  • Rant: New rescue is a crazy, reactive puller, hate taking him for walks.
Rant: Obedience class has been postponed indefinitely, gotta find a new one for him
Rant: Just discovered dog also hates the rain, this weekend will be fun
    Rant: Raining, no tennis tomorrow
Rave: Excited to my Food & Friends’ delivery, hope I get my normal route
Rave: Almost finished paying off my credit cards.

    • phl2dc

Could you get him a raincoat or something? I know someone whose rain-phobic dog does better when covered.

    • I’m also the owner of a crazy reactive rescue dog. I love her but she’s nuts. School helps, make sure it’s positive reinforcement training. Especially private lessons if you can do them because being around other dogs may be too distracting. Check out front clip harnesses, I like the freedom harness. Or a gentle leader, but follow the instructions so your dog doesn’t end up hating it.

      • +1,000 to front clip harnesses. I recommend the Easy Walk by Gentle Leader.

      • We have a freedom harness too. It helps but certainly hasn’t fixed anything – our pup has learned to just face away from us and lean HARD in that direction lol. It’s easier to control him though.

      • we rescued our dog about 6 months ago and she was also reactive and a puller. something i read said that new rescues are often a bit cuckoo/weird/reactive because they’ve just been heavily vaccinated and (obviously) are stressed with so much new stuff/environment.

we were settling in to having a bit of a struggle (even considering professional therapists!) but watched enough youtube videos and read enough stuff about reactivity (careforreactivedogs dot com) that she’s now very chill and plays well with other dogs at the park.

as far as the pulling, it’s still a struggle, but way better than initially was — we had her on a head collar/harness for about two months just to get her a bit under control because she’s crazy ADHD and has crazy prey drive; now we are using the chest harness with very satisfactory results.

Funny: Dreamed that AO was Friday Girl and she posted explicit pictures of her with her current guy. I was shocked it was my awful offie and horrified that she knew I talked about her here. The explicit pix and red condom were NBD.
Rant: My cunning cat waited until I removed the wee pad from the bed, b/c I was going to sleep, to pee on the bed. Cannot wait for these bastard hormones to get out of her system!
Rave: Tattoo placement decided, I am ready!

  • Rave: Enjoyed waking up to the story that the Vatican is officially distancing itself from Kim Davis. I am completely unsurprised that Davis’ camp tried to make this a bigger deal than it was, I am also completely unsurprised that she was invited by the Vatican Embassy. There really is a difference in the Church between liberals and conservatives (not in regards to politics, but in regards to Church teaching), and this whole thing really highlights that. As always, it seem that the conservatives (who orchestrated the meeting and then if not leaked it themselves, sought to bolster Davis’ case by making it to be more than it was) tried to force the Pope’s hand in all of this. I’m glad he came out with the facts and also called into question her claim of conscientious objection. However. Still not enough to get my ass back in a pew.
Rave: wearing sparkly nail polish. Every now and then I look down at my hands as I type and it makes me smile.
Rave: TFIF! We survived another week!

    • Emmaleigh504

My work’s elevators have really great lights for sparklies. I’m always doing spirit fingers in the elevator to enjoy it.

    • phl2dc

Sparkly nail polish is very distracting so I had to stop wearing it… πŸ™

    • Bonus Rave: I am in love with my new Toms Herringbone Booties, and the hopefully super cute moto hoodie has already arrived and will be trialed tomorrow.

      • Woooo! I have Toms wedges and I LOVE them. After I wear them out I might go for a pair of their booties.

        • Take it from me, they are so comfy! I ordered mine super cheap from Zulily, so I had to wait forever to get them, but they are totally my new faves.

    • Love your raves! though I admit to being unfamiliar with TFIF – is that “Thank Freya It’s Friday?” (I mean, it is her day after all!)

      • teeheee…. Think TGIF while replace “G” for my favorite F Word.

        • Yeah, I figured that was probably what it was πŸ™‚ Though really, Freya and F*$& are in many ways pretty interchangeable (she was the goddess of unabashed sexuality and sensuality, the ultimate party girl if I recall my Norse pantheon correctly!)

  • Rave: architect came back with approval from zoning giving the green light to my scope of work to popup/back and convert to condos.
Rave/Rant: waiting for proposal from architect that will show how much they’re going to charge for schematics etc
Rant: I’m so nervous about this project

  • Random: Has anyone seen the listings for Morton Street Mews? Is the developer high? They want 1.35 million for a townhome AND there’s a $340 HOA fee!! https://www.redfin.com/DC/Washington/777-Morton-St-NW-20010/unit-F/home/101348056

    • Accountering

This is nonsense. 1.35 million at Morton and Sherman? I don’t think so.

    • OMG I was all like “hmm this is decorated really nicely, I would totally love to have this decorator come do my home” then I hit photo number 6. I just lost it and started laughing out loud.

    • That is crazy. And the exteriors shown in the rendering look really ugly to boot.
Isn’t there some new construction right next door that’s tasteful-looking, Federal-style three-story rowhouses?

      • So the 700 block of Morton has a crazy amount of development right now. The Federal-style three-story rowhouses you’re thinking of are the condo part of Morton Street Mews. They’re facing Sherman. Then right next to the new townhomes there is an old rowhome that is being renovated, popped up and back. The one directly next to it is also being renovated (not sure if they’re together). A few houses down they popped one up and then few more down from that they popped up a SUPER SKINNY rowhome. They’re condos and they are taking FOREVER to finish it. In fact seems like it’s been at a standstill for 2 months or so.

      • Agreed totally crazy. As were the prices for the building at Newton Place and GA Ave (the one with the wood siding). Did those ever sell?

        • Yeah, they did and some sold over list actually! I think there is only one left.

          • That’s the Gibson, right?

          • No, Whitney Row Condos. I don’t think the Gibson has sold as well–still some units left and they’ve been on the market for awhile. They’re at Kenyon/Georgia.

          • I have trouble remembering which street is which in southern Park View.
I remember the Whitney Row condos now — I can’t remember if it was you or someone else who posted here about a placard reading something like “Built 1907, Restored 2015,” which seemed disingenuous of the developer considering that they’d basically just razed three houses.
ParkViewRes, did you find a renter for your place?

          • I didn’t post that, but I remember reading it too. It’s a brand new building, agree it’s disingenuous.

Yep, we sure did…couple weeks ago. We found a great tenant–or at least feels like they’ll be a great tenant. Have the inspection on Monday, nervous about that.

  • Rave: Found subletter for 1 room. Woot!
Rant: Roomie making the moving process difficult even though she already has a place lined up. Just pick a day for goodness sakes!
Rant: Moved office again, but at least bus stops out front.
Rave: Randomly went to the gym & caught a self defense class. Helping with a demo next week.

  • Rant: Forgot to bring my lunch to the office today.
Rave: Decided that justified my getting some fast-food breakfast.
Rant: Discovered that the McDonald’s near my office is no longer carrying caramel frappΓ©s. (Their only frappe flavor is now chocolate chip.)
Rant (possibly mega-rant): Could this be a national thing??
Neither: I can’t find any definitive information online as to whether caramel frappΓ©s have been discontinued.
Rant: I did find a tweet saying that McDonald’s in Canada got rid of frappΓ©s (of all flavors, apparently) in March, which is a worrisome precedent.

    • Accountering

Rave: Thanks for giving me the chance to accounting-nerd out about depreciation yesterday. Best commute in a while πŸ™‚

    • This is the best RRRR of the day. Also, what date are they starting all-day breakfast for certain items again?!

      • My recollection is that all-day breakfast is supposed to start October 6, which is Tuesday.

        • Emmaleigh504

But it’s only some things and it depends on what the store sells most of. I fear my McD’s will be an all day egg mcmuffin place (gag puke) instead of all day biscuit sandwich. I could so use a sausage biscuit this morning.

    • That One Guy

Soon I will have my McGriddleMac, that’s right I’ve been dreaming about the day where breakfast and lunch meet.

    • palisades

Everyone is disappointing me. McDonalds is absolute basura.

      • palisades

In college, after parties, we used to go to McDonalds at like 3 am and order absurd amounts of food. I’m talking $70 or $80 worth. Those were dark times.

        • Emmaleigh504

In college we used to have to wait until 5am (7am on Sundays!) for McDonald’s to open so we could get our drunk fix.

      • It is. BUT I’m excited about this because it will give me a CHEAP breakfast-for-dinner option when I go to class at night. I haven’t been to McDonald’s for non-breakfast in years.

  • Rant: Deluges of rain are less fun when you’re 8+ months pregnant and can’t zip up a rain jacket. I really don’t want to buy a new jacket to use for such a short period of time.
Rave: Braided kiddo’s hair for the first time last night–it was so cute that I did it again this morning. I need to get a photo!
Rave: Parent observation at her daycare classroom was adorable. The kids all love showing off for the parent observers. So stinking cute.
Rave: Weekend. Meal plan includes crock pot meatloaf & Italian Wedding Soup. And I’ll take advantage of the 3-day weekend next weekend to make pumpkin oatmeal raisin cookies! Maybe I’ll make bagels too. Yum. So many starch cravings these days. And good to stock up on easy-to-eat food before #2 comes….

    • Sounds like someone is nesting!

      • I think you might be right. Especially since I just came across a suggestion to let older kids “decorate” your bump and take photos and my first response was: that sounds like fun! Let’s pull the fingerpaint out this weekend and let the kiddo go to town! Clearly, I’m clinical.

    • I totally feel you on the starch cravings. Once I got into second trimester and the food aversions started to disappear, I’ve wanted to eat nothing but bread and muffins.

      • My food aversions are back in full force–part of what is drawing me to bagels and cookies. (Not even salty carbs, which is SO unlike me) Oh! And peanut butter! I can’t get enough…

  • Rave: Working from home means I’m on the couch and comfy and actually enjoying the sound of all this rain.
Rant: Acorns!! The patio and stairs leading up to it are covered in acorns. I clear them away and they’re back within an hour. I can also sometimes hear a full minute of acorns falling from the tree. Between the acorns and the wet metal stairs I’m positive I’m going to twist my ankle at some point.

  • Rant: I hate the cold, I hate the rain, I am less than enthused about how Winter Is Coming, I want summer back… πŸ™
Rave: It’s Friday! And the hurricane is missing us!
Rave: Friend just invited me to her wedding… in two weeks, haha (people canceled so she had more space). Fortunately it’s nearby! Yay, looking forward to that.
Rave: Haircut tonight. My hair dresser is the best. She moved to a new, waaay more expensive and swanky salon – but she’s keeping her cheap old haircut price for her old customers (which is $35 versus I think $110 or something).

  • Rant: The person who offered to help me give fluids to a sick kitten yesterday never showed up or even let me know.
Revel: A good neighbor friend came over and the kitten is much better today.
Request: Though I have a good roster of helpers for this, I can always use more. When kittens get sick it is often very sudden and dramatic. Sub-Q fluids are a lifesaver. No skill is needed, you just hold the kitten. If anyone is interested, please email me at vicmck at gmail. I live at 14th & Irving.

  • Rave: DOG’s elbow is just a little tweaked, so he just needs rest. No x-rays or anything.
Rant: damn, vet visits are so expensive and whenever they suggest more stuff I’m like ‘yeah, do it, I love my dog.’ Next up: crazy pricey teeth cleaning!
Rant: my mom decided that when she gets in this afternoon she should come to my place. My place which I have not had time to clean. I’m so embarrassed.
Rave: my boss is super understanding and flexible. I told him I had to go to the vet this morning and he said he hopes my dog is okay, so I sent him a pic of DOG.
Rant: I can’t stop spending money!

    • Aww! Poor Otis! What happened? How’d he tweak his elbow?

      • I don’t know actually.
He’s going to be super sad when I cut his walks extremely short though πŸ™

      • But, the good thing about the vet appt is that I found out I’m getting him a little too chubby. It was good to have a weight check in, because now I know to cut back on his food.
I wish someone would control my calorie intake for me. I should probably diet with Otis in solidarity because I’ve gotten myself a bit chubby lately :-/

        • it is SO. HARD. to put an animal on a diet. Because they don’t understand that you’re doing it for their own good. And they get whiny and frantic for a few days – then things usually settle down, but initially it’s hard (just like with people!) Good luck, I’m sure Otis won’t give you too much grief πŸ™‚

    • emvee

I took my dog to Helping Hands in Richmond per a Popville suggestion for his teeth cleaning and it was great. My vet here had quoted me like $600 for the cleaning, plus additional per tooth extraction. For about $200, he got a cleaning, two extractions and they clipped his nails while he was sedated at no extra cost. If you have the time to take him to Richmond, I highly recommend them. I spent my day there getting a great breakfast and checking out the VMFA and then got to come home with a sleepy but clean-mouthed dog.

      • Oh wow, that might be worth it. I got quoted $750 and that’s just the cleaning, any extractions would be more.

        • FWIW, there may be a little bit of buyer beware/you get what you pay for there. I’m sure they have nothing but the best intentions, but I happened to mention something to my sister about them & she was very wary & had seen some less-than-optimal outcomes on surgeries. My guess is that a tooth cleaning is straightforward enough to not be an issue, but just something to keep in mind.

Helping Hands is FANTASTIC!! They caught a rotting root in my pup’s mouth during cleaning, and extracted it, and likely saved us a ton of grief and money later on. All for $225! Can’t speak highly enough of that place.

      Poor Otis!

Rant: I enjoyed big storms back when I was a renter. Heck, even having the roof leak or basement flood was a fun little adventure back then. Now that I’m financially responsible for my own home, I enjoy big storms markedly less and instead just worry about all of the possible ways in which my house could be damaged.

  • Question for the PoPulace: Recommendations for ski resorts? I’m planning a trip Christmas weekend for my BF’s Christmas present, but I have no clue of these things. My preference would be for a resort within 2 hours drive of Baltimore with on-site accommodation.

    • palisades

Two things – 1) I would wait until after New Years for a ski trip. And 2) I would go to Snowshoe.
Regarding my first point, the powder in this region is nonexistent until early January. If you can wait until February even better.
Second, Snowshoe is the only resort within driving distance that has conditions resembling a real mountain.
I know I sound super stuck up, but after plenty of trips to Wintergreen, Massanutten, and Whitetail; Snowshoe is the only place worth going. It also has an awesome town on the top of the mountain.

      • Accountering

Hehe, I think my comment was basically identical to yours. Agree with palisades, Snowshoe is the only place worth going.

        • Accountering

The other benefit with Snowshoe is you aren’t in PA, don’t have to go through PA, and you aren’t only an hour or so from Pittsburgh, so there will be less PA people there πŸ™‚

        • palisades

Skiing around here sucks. And it makes me want to move to Colorado or Vermont haha. Maybe in another life

      • To join the chorus, Christmas skiing in the mid-Atlantic isn’t great. If you are set on that weekend, try to get cheap airfare and go west (I prefer Utah, but opinions vary) or north. Also, in driving distance here Showshoe is the best, but it’s a lot more than 2 hours away – probably 4-5 (though when I drove there last year, it was a blizzard, so who knows how long it would be real time). If you do go to Snowshoe, plan on cooking, if you can – the food there absolutely stinks.

      • Thanks everyone! Hmm, maybe I should rethink my idea. My personal goal was to go somewhere I could get plastered at and he could indulge in snowboarding. Tubing for the two of us. But, perhaps a visit to NYC for the weekend or somewhere else might be better, then perhaps wait until February for the snowboarding weekend.

        • palisades

I think this all depends on his skill level. If he’s content with really basic slopes, then the local places may suffice. Maybe ask him if he’s gone snowboarding around here and gauge his response? Tubing is fun all season and doesn’t need fresh powder. Massanutten takes pride in its draw as a vacation resort. I used to be a ski instructor there, and people would come from all over the country to spend a week there because it’s more than just a mountain to ski on.

          • He’s not a huge snowboarder, and I suppose there’s always a chance that he would just want to tube and drink with me! I’ll look into Massanutten.

    • Accountering

This is a tough one – the close ski resorts suck. If he is a skiier, he won’t be that interested in a multi day trip to actually ski at Liberty or Roundtail or any of the PA resorts. They very likely won’t have snow on the ground, outside of where the snow making machine makes snow for the runs, so these won’t even have the winter resort feel to them.
Best bet (locally) is Snowshoe. That is about 5 hours from Baltimore. The other good option is Seven Springs. It isn’t quite as good, but it is about 3:15 from Baltimore.
Depending on how many people are coming, and the budget, the best skiing would be to hop a cheap flight to Burlington and go to Stowe or Killington etc.

      • palisades

I was supposed to go to Stowe last year with my girlfriend and her friends – and they ALL DROPPED OUT. It was the worst. #firstworldprobs

        • Accountering

I am either going to Big Bear Mountain / Mammoth this year (Andie has a friend in LA who just bought a cabin at the bottom of Big Bear) or Stowe/Killington may be in the cards as well. Big group trip this year with an AirBNB? Haha!

          • palisades

I’m doing a snowshoe trip and a Loon (New Hampshire) trip this year. I think that will be enough for me haha

          • Big Bear has sucked the past few years. Nearly all man-made snow and insanely crowded. The Sierras had their worst season in generations.
However, they’re supposed to get hit my El Nino this winter, so they are banking for record snow. Would certainly recommend Mammoth over Big Bear, but the drive from LA is easily 2-3x as long (2.5 hours vs. 7-8 hours)

      • PSA/Rant: The Ski Center is having their intro sale this through this weekend, if you need anything – some decent deals. Be warned, though, it’s PACKED, and if you need help with anything (boots, skis), there’s a waiting list.

    • Accountering

Also, don’t go over Christmas. There won’t be (much) snow, and the conditions will range from fair (if you are lucky) to downright horrible (if you are unlucky)
We just don’t get snow in this area in December.

    • houseintherear

Aww this is a sad group of comments re: skiing in the mid-east. πŸ™ I grew up skiing around here and it was wonderful… of course not as wonderful as skiing out west, but still great. Our favorite place was always Seven Springs, because there’s a fun lodge there and we could stay in the hotel at the ski resort. I liked a few of their longer easy/medium runs as a kid. My parents still go there (and ski for free! yay seniors!) at least once a year (I can’t ski anymore due to a back injury and being quite fat :), but if I could I would go with them!) We also went to Blue Knob and other resorts, but none felt as “resort-y” as Seven Springs.

    • I am having total second thoughts after hearing what everyone had to say. The BF has surprisingly never been to NYC, so I’m now thinking that may be a better option, and then going tubing in February with the kids so he and his older son can snowboard. I would ask his preference, but I wanted it to be a surprise (My idea was to just blindfold him and drive).

  • Rave: Ventured into the rain for a sandwich from GW Deli. First time I’ve been, and I don’t know why because I’ve worked or lived in Foggy Bottom on and off for ages. A little expensive but SO GOOD. So much bacon.

  • RAVE-BRAG: they installed my standing work station in my office. And gave me dual monitors. OMG, amazing. I can raise or lower the station with two fingers, allowing me to alternately stand or sit.
RAVE: so much better for my health and productivity. Burning calories by sitting! Less back pain!
RANT: still my same old office with no window to the natural light of the real world :-/

    • This is my rave. I highly recommend the Ergotron WorkFit-S with dual monitor supports. It just attaches to your pre-existing desk. So sweet.

The worst thing about teleworking is the single monitor.
