Damn It, Looks Like Henry’s Soul Cafe isn’t coming back to U Street after all

1704 U Street, NW

Very sad news for sweet potato pie fans. Thanks to a reader for sending an update on Henry’s Soul Cafe on U Street: “The space is for rent now…”.

After experiencing serious fire damage back in June 2014, Henry’s Soul Cafe had hoped to reopen in 2-3 months. Sadly, the owner Henry Smith passed away in October 2014.  The 4th and K St, NW location also closed back in June. There have been no updates on Henry’s facebook page since July. Not looking good at all.

  • 🙁 — I was looking so forward to them reopening. 🙁

  • My favorite memory was going in for some chicken salad on white bread, and when asked for the sandwich being told ‘baby, I don’t know if I’m even making any today.’ Instant Classic and I’ve probabky used that line 500 times over the last decade. It is indeed a shame and I will enjoy my memories of country ham sandwiches and barbecue meatloaf.

  • Really too bad, great soul food spot, was looking forward to the reopening.

  • that’s too bad, but it is what I said would happen. the landlord can and now will charge more rent.
