  • Rave: I’m back! I moved! Apartment is great! Success!
    Rant: Back to work.
Rave/Rant: Got a date for this weekend. Then lost date because the guy just wanted a hook-up. At least he told me. Not a huge disappointment.

    • How did that come up after date planning? Like whoops I just wanna bang; is that cool? lol guys are funny
Glad it worked out on the move.

      • I wonder about this too. I am guessing he was a bit more covert with something along the lines of “I just want something casual and to blow off some steam”

      • Thanks. And yes, that’s exactly how it came up. Haha. I was like “Okayyyy then, no thanks.” :[

        • Welcome back! Sorry this happened, I had something similar. Because I was traveling for a few days for work, I had messaged with a guy quite a bit – way more than I normally would’ve. I was looking forward to meet him until he said “you know, I think we’re going to be great f*buddies”. I was glad I never bothered to meet him, because clearly we weren’t on the same page.

          • ” I was glad I never bothered to meet him, because clearly we weren’t on the same page.”
            This is so true!

      • Or sometimes they’ll ask if you want to “come over and watch a movie”

      • Did anyone else read that VF article on how Tinder is ruining dating?

    • Welcome back! Sorry about the date but at least he was honest and you didn’t waste your time. Again, welcome back!

    • Welcome back!
Whatever happened to the Korean-British guy you were in contact with before you left — was he going back to the UK or something?

  • Rave: Beautiful morning.
Rant: Budget cuts in light of a growing program. Saying one thing and doing another. Management forcing everyone to jump through hoops and play the game… so tired of it. Would like to actually do my job please.
Rave: Desktop backgrounds of happier times. It’s incredible how calming a picture of something you love can be when you’re boiling over.
Rave: Friend is back on the East Coast and on her way to a well-regarded intensive outpatient treatment program.

  • Farragut

RAVE: Board game night at Labyrinth Games (in Eastern Market) tonight! Anyone else going? 🙂
    RANT: C’mon, Nats… not like this…

    • I love games, but as an introvert who is always uncomfortable around new people, I’m always nervous about coming to these things – how do they work? None of my friends like games, and I’d love to find a place to play.

      • Farragut

I don’t know specifically of any Popviller who have visited Labyrinth in particular, but usually people show up any time by or after 6pm, go to the back of the store (where the tables are), and people are usually looking for people to join them in games. The employees are REALLY friendly too so even if all the tables & people are already playing, they’ll probably set you up or play with you themselves.

  • Rant: Apt property manager is incompetent. Even after telling the guy I wouldn’t be home, he was sent without keys. This issue has happened before even with no conversation. Assign a job, give keys, do job…nothing complicated!
Rave:’My tenants don’t have these issues.
    Rave: Lunch with my friend.
Rave?: Happy hour with other friend?
Rant: The guy with all the questions has the most awful breath.
Rant: Lackluster dating. Why did you fave me if you weren’t going to converse with me? We even swapped numbers & nothing. I initiated the conversation, so I expect something back. Silly me.

  • palisades

Rave: Saw a license plate this morning for who I assumed to be JustinBC – “BEG2DIFF” 🙂

  • Pablo Raw

Rave: Got a lot of work done of my mini-remodeling project
Rant: Still a lot to do.
    Rant: Dust

  • Rant: back to work. I know, you must all be feeling sorry for me
Rant: can’t start setting up my classroom because I’m in a workshop
Revel: it’s nice to have something to do all day and be making extra money rather than spending it

Unofficial HH on wed Aug 19 at southern hospitality. Theme: red

  • Rant: Interview with a large company that will get me a large pay increase, closer to home, and with a lot more growth opportunity. Nailed all four interviews on Friday, and my former boss from current company gave a tremendous reference on Monday. I couldn’t get my former boss from my last company to do a reference based on very strict corporate rules, but was able to convince another supervisor who I worked with somewhat to give a reference which went well.
Rant2: Just got a call from the recruiter – despite large company really liking me, they want to check off the reference box (despite their internal rules forbidding references as well) so now want me to come in tomorrow to meet with a couple more people.
Rant3: Was expecting the call from the recruiter to be a job offer. Getting a bit exasperated to be honest. Current job is fine, and the pay raise isn’t THAT much.

    • So you have to meet with more people because they didn’t get the reference they wanted?

    • I Dont Get It

Yeah I’ve run across this before…

“They want to check off the reference box (despite their internal rules forbidding references as well)…and it can be maddening.

    • Exactly. They want me to come in and meet with 2 or 3 more people. Despite already meeting with the Director, my future manager (phone screen and in person) a senior manager from another department, and a senior manager from my department, and having two solid references.
My recruiter tried to get me a 3:00pm slot tomorrow, and they want me to come in at 12:45… WTF? They know I am currently employed. I am starting to get a bad vibe, and certainly getting frustrated.

      • That’s lunch time. I would think that is a better time if you can swing the distance & time.

      • I don’t see how meeting with more people will check off the reference box … it is a different thing altogether. Just be charming is my advice.

  • Rave: Beautiful weather!
Rant: This weekend is supposed to be grossly hot and humid again. Boo.
Rant/Rave: Sore from yoga. But in a good way, I guess. Also, somehow burst a tiny blood vessel in my hand!
Question: There are a million restaurants in this town, and I want to go out with a small group of friends somewhere nice -but not super expensive -for my birthday. I have a couple weeks to plan, but I just don’t even know where to start. Popville hasn’t failed me yet with great suggestions, so I need some good ideas again – go!

    • We need more parameters 🙂 Any area of interest, cuisine, food limitations, specialty? Any details will help! If you have none, that might be why you haven’t been able to identify. We had a great group dinner for 6 this past Friday at Thally. The service, food, and atmosphere were great.

      • Yeah, really that’s the problem, there’s so many things I like, although I guess I can rule out vegan-only cuisine, seafood isn’t my favorite but it depends, uh…and I’d prefer not to eat my main dish with my fingers. I’d love to get out of there with a drink or two, a main, and maybe an app, for around $75/person (pre-tip) if possible. I’d also prefer someplace that’s not super loud. Guess that would be a starting point….

        • I asked the same question and the recommendations for Thip Khao convinced me to try it again, even though I was underwhelmed the first two times I went. Mistake. It was shrieky nightclub loud. And the food was mediocre. And the service was poor.
So that was the 3rd and last time. I don’t understand the hype.
I have had fantastic experiences recently at Rasika and at Chez Billy.

          • I’d schlep out to Bangkok Golden over Thip Khao to avoid atmosphere

          • justinbc

It’s got a 4.5 rating with nearly 200 reviews. Not that Yelp scores are the be-all-end-all, but give how much people love to bitch about the slightest things on there I think at this point it’s fair to say it’s not just “hype” but rather a pretty well agreed upon great restaurant that you just happen to not enjoy, for the reasons you’ve indicated. Not every place is for every diner, and that’s OK, it’s one of the benefits of living in a (relatively) big city.

        • I think we made it out of Thally at about $65/person with a drink or two, some starters, and everyone getting a main (although one person was pregnant, so that might’ve offset a bit). Lost and Found is a few doors down, so we went there afterwards for drinks.

      • Thanks all for your suggestions! I’m going to look into these, talk with the other folks coming and see if they have any preferences, and I’ll let you know what happens 🙂

    • skj84

What about Red Hen in Bloomingdale?

    • Rosemary’s Thyme is my go-to for affordable, but good.

    • anonymouse_dianne

I recommend Chez Billy Sud — its a beautiful location, the restaurant is not noisy, the food is delish. My sister took me for my birthday. We got a bottle of wine and our bill was just $100. And when I mentioned it was my birthday they said that dessert was on them! I had the chocolate mousse which was scrumptious.

      • Is that the one in Georgetown? Cause it take a lot of enticement for me to drag my ass out there!

        • anonymouse_dianne

Yes, just off M at 31st near the canal. You can take the Circulator there. Maybe spot a snakehead!

    • Zaytinya is great!

    • That One Guy

Makoto is worth a try. Just be warned that its quiet dining.
      Maybe Thai Xing.

      • emvee

+1 Thai Xing. If you call for the Florida Ave location, say it’s someone’s birthday, and ask if you can bring booze, sometimes they say yes! I’ve had success, you just have to keep your bottle under the table. It’s worth a shot?

    • Silo, Bistro D’Oc and Cure are all good.

    • justinbc

Doi Moi. Rose’s Luxury is actually well within your price parameter as well. A lot of people think it’s more expensive than it really is.

  • rave: haircut!! with Akiko who runs Kamiya-A. She was super sweet, did a great job and I love my new cut (which was going from mid back length hair to an above the nape bob), found my new hair home I think. Plus Hana market is like 3 doors down so I got a lot of good snacks.
rant: bizarre stomach cramp (lower left gut), used to get them a lot as a kid, right before winter starts but its too early!

  • I Dont Get It

Rant: Starting to feel overwhelmed with the home situation—the house is a wreck and tenant has started sleeping on the floor of my room. He claims it is because it has better air conditioning but I think the real reason is he has so much trash and clothing stacked up in the two bedrooms he uses there isn’t much room to sleep. He’s made zero progress on getting a new job and his previous boss is refusing to give recommendations out of spite (granted I’ve only heard one side of the story.) He’s supposed to go back on his meds this week so maybe some progress will be made soon.
    Rave: Loving this weather!
Rave2: I’m starting to lock my laptop up in my reclaimed cubicle at night instead of schlepping it back and forth. I feel like they forgot about us. There’s four of us working in a space that with hoteling probably holds 40 persons yet supposedly we are out of space.

    • Why haven’t you kicked him out yet? Now he’s in your room & hording/rooms filled with trash…
It’ll probably be hard to find someone who’s cool with elderly dog, but it’s just not worth it to put up with the craziness.

    • Holy crap, IDGI! I am so sorry you’re going through all this. I know you’re trying to be gentle with your tenant because of his likely fragile mental state, but I think you need to express that your room is off-limits – it’s his bad if he can’t use the TWO bedrooms he has due to messiness. If it is due to the AC, then offer to put a nice big fan in there, but that you need your own space if you’re not going to become resentful of him. Not that this would be a fun conversation to have, probably, but for the sake of your own mental health, you HAVE to set some boundaries.

      • +1 on the boundaries. So sorry you both are going through this. You may need to have a conversation along the lines of “I care about your well-being, but you’re impacting mine and there needs to be a change in a positive direction.” Take care of yourself!

      • I Dont Get It

I agree. Once he is back on his meds we will have *the talk* and I will give him 30 days to find a job or he is out. I like having the extra money and it would be difficult to find a new tenant who didn’t mind wading through dog pee every morning but this is really starting to impact my mood.

        • Does he know that your having “the talk” is dependent on his going back on his meds?
What happens if he doesn’t go back on his meds? Especially if he knows that the 30-day period kicks in once he’s back on his meds, it seems like he might decide to indefinitely postpone going back on the meds, so as to postpone having to find someplace else to live.
Can you get him to relocate to his mother’s house? (Is she Stateside, or in their home country?)

      • Agree – sleeping in your room is beyond acceptable. You can be both kind and firm in letting him know that he cannot sleep in your room.

      • Agreed with the others.

      • Sound like the dog is already pushing through boundaries I’d have in place, creating an issue with potential tenants.

        • What are you talking about — “the dog is already pushing through boundaries”?? Yes, the elderly-dog situation might be problematic for getting a future tenant. But the immediate problem here isn’t the dog; it’s the mentally unstable tenant.

    • Holy crap! Those are some crazy boundary issues

    • You are a saint for letting your tenant sleep in your room! I could never do that. There has to be a solution to this. It must end.

    • Yikes IDGI… I think you are amazing for dealing with this situation, but I can’t imagine how this must be impacting you! I hope you are getting the support you need in dealing with this situation.

    • I am so sorry you are dealing with all this. Take good care of yourself, and please don’t feel guilty for setting the boundaries that you need for your own well-being.

    • Emmaleigh504

I had a roommate like this once. I tried to help, but he wasn’t into it. Luckily, I had the option to move out. Shortly after that his parents took over and made him get help.
I’m so sorry you are in this situation.

  • Suggestion: Either turn off your lights or close your curtains before engaging in vertical lovemaking in your living room. While it’s possible that the couple in the 3rd floor apartment on 16th street were getting a kick out of the exhibitionism, I think it’s more likely that they would be totally skeeved to know that a crowd of off-duty construction workers, a couple of dog walkers, and yes, my kids, were watching. I’m no prude, but I’m glad the light turned green when it did.

  • Rant: So in continuing news of WMATA being a total and utter failure, they apparently knew about the messed up tracks and chose to do nothing a month BEFORE the derailment. Even another certain blog that is devoted to public transportation and smart growth had to acknowledge this organization is beyond help today. Oh my goodness- what other stuff are they aware of that they just can’t be bothered to address? It is amazing to me that this is allowed to go on, but this issue is loaded for so many reasons and I don’t see anyone who is going to want to touch it and really change things around. Good luck, Metro riders. You’re on your own. Hope it all works out.
Rave: when you accidentally throw in “dry clean only” clothes into the regular wash, and they still come out nice, clean, and NOT ruined! Yay!
Beautiful morning for a bike ride to work. Loving this low humidity!!

  • Rant: Parking enforcement. I called yesterday to have them come out and no one ever showed. When I called to follow up on the complaint they said they came by and there were no infractions. I took a picture. There were at least 4 parking infractions including the worst one which was completely blocking an entrance/exit to an alley for 3 hours!! If someone came to go in the alley they refused to move.

This is a weekly problem. I got a supervisor’s number but does anyone have any other ideas? And, yes, I have spoken to the offenders directly multiple times. They don’t care.

  • Rant: Dealing with some serious food aversions at the moment. I’m having a difficult time convincing myself to eat something other than peaches and bananas.
Rave: Best friend’s wedding is coming up next week.
    Rave: One month until vacation.

    • I Dont Get It

Could you make a peach smoothie with some unflavored protein powder?

      • Or throw in some greens and yogurt to the smoothie to give it a bit more protein and vitamin heft.

        • Thanks y’all! We made a banana and kale smoothie with protein powder this morning. It was hard to get down but it was probably the most substantial meal I’ve had in the past few days.

          • Also, Rabbit, don’t stress yourself out too much if you aren’t able to get that much food into you at this point. The little succubus will still get all the nutrients it needs (especially if you are taking a prenatal, etc). Remembering that helps me stress less on those days when i just don’t want to eat (or when the idea of certain foods makes me feel barfy).

          • Thanks artemis. At this point, I’m only concerned because most of my food aversions deal with protein. I’m struggling to find any protein that doesn’t automatically make my stomach turn. So far all animal meat, eggs, beans, and most dairy items are on my no list.

          • Some ideas: hummus, lentils, quinoa, any kind of nut butter if you can stomach it (I want all the peanut butter these days), pumpkin seeds, soy milk, or maybe seitan (I think it is the best of the meat substitute products).

Can you tell my best friend is a vegetarian?

I hope you feel less queasy sooner than later.

          • Ouch, RabbitRabbitRabbit — that’s quite a list! I know you said beans are on your no list, but I’m curious how you would do with lentils. One of the most soothing meals I’ve had recently was homemade lentil soup with chopped up carrots and sweet potatoes. Super simple and it went down easy. Homemade chicken soup with orzo was also a big winner. In fact, I’m going to have some right now!

          • I haven’t tried lentils yet but chickpeas were a bad lunch choice yesterday. I think I’ll pick up a bag and give them a try as I typically like lentils (I just never think of cooking them until it’s cold out). The combo of lentils and sweet potato does sound good.
It’s really bizarre that the foods that I typically eat the most (chicken and eggs) are the ones that are causing me the most problems. It’s made my usual go-to sick food of homemade chicken and dumpling soup impossible.

          • I hope lentils work for you! They really gave me a firm reset after my last “episode.” I forgot to mention that I threw a heathy handful of brown rice into that soup. It was bland as can be — no spices at all — but REALLY settled my stomach. I’ve been able to eat other foods a lot more easily since I polished off that pot of lentil soup.

  • skj84

Rant: angsty today. Boy stuff and waiting to hear back about a show have got me in a mood.

Rave: Finished work around noon. Maybe I should explore the city. Do the touristy thing.

    • Go check out the canal (?) near Georgetown (?). That picture of the snakehead last week got me wanting to see it. I love peering into clear water.

  • laduvet

Rave: Sleeping with the windows open!!! 4 days in row <3 it!

Rant: Decided to pay 1k to slow boat my 6 large plastic tubs to London… at least i will keep all my clothing and some small decorative things. Takes 4 weeks to get my stuff once sent, I guess outfit planning and undies for 4 weeks is needed! OH the planning!!!

    Rave: It's almost over!

    • When I moved over, I was able to take two large checkin bags, 45kilos each. Are you able to do this? It can help with the limited options!

      • laduvet

        ha! thats already assumed!

I am moving for good! so boots and jackets, entire wardrobe, and whatever i can squirrel in will be shipped. Unfortunately I just have too much!

        • I went for three years (with zero plan of moving back lol), but I was only 18 so the contents of my life easily fit in two huge suitcases. However, coming home was an entirely different story!!

  • Rave: This weather is amazing. Can we get at least a couple months of this, please? It’s been a definite mood boost.
Mostly rave: Guy brought up first that he was feeling like just friends. Both relieved we were on the same page, despite the slight, irrational hit to insecurities. But hey, hopefully we’ll actually be able to stay friends which would be really nice – we both said we’ve had a lot of fun hanging out.
Rant: That explosion in China. Saw some videos last night that were just terrifying. Some were livestreams and… pretty sure whoever was filming didn’t make it out alive.

  • Rave: They countered and SO accepted!!
Rave: Tears of joy this morning – knowing this is the right step and making the decision feels so good.
Rant: Now to tell everyone (including the PoPulace!) and start the planning.
Rant: In the foreseeable future I’ll have two homes and two cities.
Rave: Both cities are fabulous, we have friends in both, and great jobs. So I can’t complain.

  • That One Guy

Rant: mom developed a rough cough and it’s horrible to hear her hacking. She’s taking medication but not sure how helpful they are.

  • Accountering

Question: I am looking for a LARGE rug to essentially state my basement for the final inspection and appraisal. The stairs are getting removed post-appraisal, and then nice carpeting will go down, but it is currently just concrete. The room is 10′ by about 20′. Does anyone have anything in storage or anything similar that I could borrow for a few days? I would be happy to pay you to borrow it, I just hate to buy something for this, when ultimately we are going to be putting down carpet in the next month.

    • Accountering

Does anyone have anything in their basement, or storage? Or anything similar? I can certainly pick up, and drop off etc. Or if you just want to sell it to me that would be fine as well 🙂

      • I Dont Get It

Well I would never suggest you buy something and then return it a few days later because that would be wrong!

      • If you really can’t find something Home Depot has inexpensive and strangely sized rugs. I’m not sure how you’d get something that big to the store to return, but they took back a rug that arrived at my house filthy and didn’t ask questions.
And I’m assuming you checked Craig’s List and Freecycle.

    • I’m all for staging for sale, but this wouldn’t seem to me to affect inspection and appraisal at all.

      • Accountering

It is a 203K, and a finished floor is a pre-requisite to finishing/closing the loan, and I can’t help but think even a rug will make the Appraiser think a bit more of the basement, and add a tiny bit of value?

        • I think next year I’m going to reclaim my home from renters, and do a 203k refi and gut the entire home. Do they limit what projects can be done? like pop back and up?

          • Accountering

Well, the biggest limit is that it is only with new purchases 🙂
Your best bet would be a cash out refinance, if you have the equity.

        • Isn’t concrete considered an acceptable finish for a basement floor? If you truly want to hide the fact that it is concrete, I would think you would need not a rug or two, but rather carpet remnants cut to fit so that they go all the way to the edges of the floor. Unless the walls are lined everywhere with furniture, boxes, shaving and the like – then you could get away without covering the edges, as that stuff would cover them. Perhaps the places that sell salvaged stuff from homes (you know, like doors and sinks and toilets) have rolls of carpeting as well. I would think they’d be cheap, as I don’t think used carpet has much resale value – it is likely to have some dirt or stains.

      • Yeah, this seems like it shouldn’t make any difference to me too. Plus why are the stairs coming out post-appraisal? Are there some shenanigans going on here?

        • I don’t think it’s a big deal. I mean my old apartment had concrete floors (granted they were stained and sealed). Also, Krampus–maybe they’re coming out post-appraisal because that’s the only time the contractor can do it?

          • Accountering

Just a timing thing with the appraisal and the schedule for the contractor. He has come up with the work plan and doing all the work (slowly) and the stairs have to come last. No shenanigans haha, other than our contractor being WILDLY behind our initial 3 month timeline (that started in January!)

  • RANT: Some a$$hole dropped a 1999 box TV in the alley by my yard yesterday! Any idea how to take care of getting rid of this? Worried if I call 311 they’ll say it’s mine and fine me!??

    • Report it as illegal dumping on the 311 site. I’ve done that several times (mattresses, construction debris) and never had them do a “he who smelt it dealt it” number on me.

    • Call 311 and schedule a bulk trash pickup for the TV.

    • Call 311 or go to the 311 website (which is now being run by a different contractor and has a host of new problems as a result).
Probably what will happen is that the DPW/SWEEP person for your area will go into 311 almost immediately and close the service request… with a note saying “Alley cleaning is needed.” It will then take another 2 weeks or so for the TV to go away. (I don’t understand how DPW is allowed to do this. IMO, it seems like the service request should stay open until the issue has been resolved — in this case, until the dumped item has been picked up.)
It’s not 100% clear from the various DPW webpages, but it had always been my impression that TVs aren’t eligible for regular bulk trash pickup and needed to be dropped off at Fort Totten. So I don’t think filling out a request for bulk trash collection is an option. Plus bulk items aren’t supposed to be put out until the night before the scheduled pickup day, and my experience has been that pickup days are scheduled 1.5-2 weeks out.

    • +1 to reporting it to 311. You can even use their mobile app to report illegal dumping. They’ll probably take care of it in less than a week. Once I woke up to two huge couches dumped right outside my drive gate which prevented me from being able to enter and exit my backyard. It took DPW four days to clear them away, but they got it done.

  • Random request for recommendation:
Anyone have success working with a financial planner that is fee-based only and does not require a minimum portfolio balance? I’m behind in saving for retirement and need help charting my way out of the weeds. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

  • Rant: I talked to my dad yesterday, and he just sounded awful. Sometimes, I think chemo is actually worse than the underlying cancer.
Rave: This was his last cancer treatment for this round. Really hoping that his cat scan comes back looking good and that he gets some treatment-free months to recover.
    Rave: This weather.

    • Yeah, I felt worse during chemo than my condition right before starting. I just focused on the end result and imagined being back to “normal” life. Thankfully the odds of success were very high, so it wasn’t that hard to do. I admire those who have worse odds and stick it out. Takes a lot of positive thinking and determination.

Best of luck to your father.

    • Fingers crossed that he begins to feel better and that his scan comes up clean. I agree with you on the chemo question – if it works, it’s worth it, but if not, then it seems to diminish quality of life by so much. Thinking of you and your family!

    • I remember how much chemo knocked my mom out and made her feel terrible – but it was worth it in the end. I hope the scan comes back good as well, good luck to him and your family!

    • Hoping your dad starts feeling much better soon! Trying to weigh the pros and cons of this kind of treatment is extremely tough, but hopefully they caught things early enough and the chemo is doing exactly what it’s supposed to so that you and your dad and family can look forward to a much better time soon!

    • Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone. It means a lot.

  • Rave: have 2nd round interview for Seattle job. It’s down to 2-3 of us.
Rave: my agency’s San Francisco office has expressed interest in hiring me.
Rant: too late for SF to do that! they ignored my resume and application last year and didn’t express interest earlier this year when they posted the opening. Now that they saw what a crap applicant pool they have, they’re interested in me (my theory)

  • Rave: Day 2 of being in between jobs and it’s gorgeous! Planning on a picnic lunch for the kiddos and playing catch in the park later. For now, all the kids are happily playing and I am happily crocheting and watching HGTV. I feel so old, lol
Revel: Spending the next week and a half at the BF’s house. So nice to get some quality and quantity time before my new job starts and we will be back to weekends
Rant: BF shares a street with a church. This morning while getting the kids in the car I had to dodge an elderly couple leaving daily mass, then got honked at by another old dude while strapping a kid in a car seat, and it wasn’t like he had to wait long, he was just being an impatient jerk.
Rave: Refuse to let assholes ruiny good mood!

  • Rave: I made another batch of white bean caprese salad to bring in and share with the office for lunch today.
Rant: My very favorite Pyrex bowl shattered into pieces just outside of my office. No salad, and loss of favorite bowl. You guys, I really loved that bowl. It was a housewarming gift 5 years ago and I use(d) it a lot.
Rant: Looked all over the Internet to purchase a replacement, and it does not exist.
Rave: I called Pyrex, and asked for their help. They are sending me, for free, a replacement bowl that is almost exactly like the shattered one that I lost. I will try not to get too emotionally attached to this new bowl.
Rave-ish: Now I get to take myself out to lunch because of this.
Rant: My date last night was lame. I was trying to engage him in conversation (what I thought was going to be getting a beer in an air conditioned bar (where there is food) turned into sitting outside eating quiche – he paid, but did not think to purchase a beverage for either of us – at a different place entirely) and he kept saying “You really don’t seem like you’re into this date.” and then mentioned an ex girlfriend and then said “Maybe you’re just not ready yet.” I just politely thanked him for the quiche and wished him luck because I thought it would be poor form to tell him that I was just not attracted to him and was bored and hot and thirsty.
Rave: The date was so fast, I was home at a reasonable time and I got to relax a bit. That was nice.
Rave: Happy Hour and live music outside with friends tonight!

    • I couldn’t make it through dinner without some kind of liquid. Good on you! Beeeeppp….on to the next one 🙂

    • Sorry about your Pyrex bowl and the dud of a date. That date sounds like a clusterf* of missteps on the guy’s part. At least he didn’t waste too much of your time. On to the next…

    • emvee

Your Pyrex story is so heartbreaking, but I’m glad they’re sending you a replacement!. I’ve been there with a spoonrest I had for like ten years.

    • Ugh! That sounds miserable! Who wouldn’t at least get a sparkling water to chase down the quiche?! And to me, that seems like an obnoxious way to check in with your date-enjoyment level, saying “You really don’t seem like you’re into this date.” Uh, yeah, maybe because it sucks to sit outside in the heat and EAT QUICHE with no beverage! Weirdo!

      • I am glad you get me, emvee. 🙂

Yeah, it was a very weird way to check in to see how things were going. The whole thing lasted maaaaybe 45 minutes? It was just strange. But that’s okay, the quiche was good, and I have date with someone that just through his emails makes me smile.

        • Well, hooray for good quiche, then 🙂

If you’re at the Unofficial HH next week, I’ll tell you my worst date story in which I gave the guy a concussion 🙂

        • So you weren’t at the venue where he got the quiche? I ask because it’s not clear why you couldn’t run inside and grab something to drink.
I wouldn’t have stayed that long, but I’m nut Mitch for being nice when something sucks.

    • Wow, that’s one of the worst dating stories I’ve heard in awhile. I’m glad you got to go home and relax!

    • I don’t get why you wouldn’t order yourself some thing to drink if you were thirsty.

      • I could have done that. I thought we were going to go back to our originally agreed upon date post-quiche and have a beer. It doesn’t bother me when I don’t drink something at a meal. The beverage part was an observation, not a complaint. By the end of the meal, I was getting thirsty (moreso because of being hot) and then the date ended.

    • Can’t believe no one has requested your white bean caprese salad yet! Please share 🙂

      • SO EASY and deeeelish! I’ve made it at least 4 times (not counting today) since I found the recipe last month. I got it from Skinnytaste:
        White Bean Caprese Salad
        Servings: 6 • Size: 3/4 cup • Weight Watchers Points+: 4 pts
        Calories: 142 • Fat: 4.5 g • Carb: 18 g • Fiber: 4 g • Protein: 8 g • Sugar: 2 g
        Sodium: 127 mg • Cholesterol: 12 mg

1 (15-oz) can Great Northern (or White Kidney) beans, drained and rinsed
        2 cups quartered cherry tomatoes
2 1/2 oz fresh mozzarella, cut into 1-inch cubes
        1 garlic clove, finely minced
        1/4 tsp kosher salt
        freshly ground black pepper
        10 fresh basil leaves, chopped
        2 tsp olive oil
        2 tsp balsamic glaze
Combine beans, tomatoes, basil, mozzarella, garlic, salt and pepper. Drizzle with olive oil and finish with balsamic glaze.

  • Additional Rant: Internet companies are horrible people. My apartment explicitly said they do not need access to my apartment to set up Comcast, that the front desk would escort to the utility closet. I told Comcast this and they said they made notes. Just got a call saying the tech skipped my building because they couldn’t reach me on the phone during work — they clearly didn’t even ask the front desk. Now some poor phone representative is trying to fix it. I’ve already been without internet since Sunday when I moved… -_-

  • That One Guy

Craving Bon Chon chicken. I regret not driving to work today. 🙁 (cue world’s smallest violin)

  • Rant: pretty sure my dry cleaner ruined my white, faux leather pencil skirt, which is one of my absolute favorites. They had me leave it there for them to look at, but it wasn’t covered in blue, mottled spots when it went in, so I don’t know that they’re going to be able to fix it now. It is dry clean only 🙁
Rave: I’ve had and continue to have so many fun, social plans this week.
Rant: It’s so much easier to do the interesting things at work than the necessary, but boring things.

    • laduvet

      Have them pay for it!

FYI _ i hand wash my faux leather skirts…..

      • SouthwestDC

I think the odds of a dry cleaner ruining something are far greater than the odds of ruining something by hand washing. Less of a health hazard to wash by hand, too.

        • I’ve never had a problem with anything I’ve taken there and they’re friendly and nice, but I was also fairly horrified that they used safety pins through the faux leather to put it on a hanger.
I’d love to have them pay for it, but I can’t get a new one, it’s like 2 seasons old 🙁

          • SouthwestDC

Well, I’ve never had a problem with anything I’ve ever handwashed either. 😉 I even wash wool coats and skirts/dresses with linings.
My biggest concern with dry cleaners is that they use chemicals that are known to cause cancer and neurological damage. Also I’m lazy and don’t want to spend all that money.

        • I’ve heard so many horror stories about dry cleaners ruining garments that I’ve never gotten anything dry cleaned.
I love having a “hand wash” setting on my washing machine.

          • I should add that they also rescued a cashmere sweater I got metallic paint and pork juice on. Lots of pork juice. It was some sort of magic that I’m confident I can’t replicate at home.
I didn’t know so many people were anti-dry cleaning.

          • I’m not anti-dry cleaning per se… more afraid/wary of dry cleaning.
Getting paint off of a garment does sound like some kind of magic!
Have you confronted them about the blue mottled spots on the skirt and whether they can do anything to remove them?

    • SouthwestDC

I’m still bitter about my faux suede skirt that the dry cleaners ruined in high school. Come to think of it, that’s the last thing I ever got dry cleaned.

  • Emmaleigh504

Rave: Fancy English Violet seeds arrived!

  • Quotia Zelda

Rant: My vascular system is crap. I have Raynaud’s, so if I get chilly (and temps as high as 72 will do it), my fingers and lips turn blue. If I drink some tea to try and warm up, my rosacea flares, and my face turns red. WTH, self???
Rave: My dad has become a bowtie enthusiast. He’s adorable about it.

    • At first I read “My dad has become a Bowie enthusiast” and I was wondering what on earth THAT looked like! Sorry about your vascular system, I can relate too well.

  • Rant: tickets. I just tried to get tickets to Mindy Kaling at 6th&I, which went on sale today at noon. I literally clicked at 12:00:01 and they were already sold out. How does that even happen? And with a 4 tix max per transaction, too.

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: I work with paranoid children.

  • Rant – The ridiculous number of DDOT workers that “direct traffic” for Nats game. I swear they just cause more traffic.

  • I Dont Get It

Bonus Rant: The new neighbors are starting to move in on the other side of the fishbowl. One woman, an auditor, needs to learn to use her inside the fishbowl voice.*
*Shouldn’t auditors have quiet voices anyway?
She’s also decided since we are “IT” we should be her personal computer support. Sorry, lady we don’t do PCs. Open a ticket like everyone else does. And hold it down!

  • Rant: I love the idea of working from home, but I’m not sure it’s working out well to have Gary here every day with me. He doesn’t know what to do when I’m not giving him constant cuddles and play time and he gets into trouble when I leave him alone. I think I might murder his duck squeaky toy. Does it get better?
Rave: I don’t want to jinx it, but I think I might be over (this spell of?) morning sickness. I actually want to eat a bigger variety of foods now and I had enough energy last night to do some exploring. We tried Nopalito last night and it was yummy! I didn’t even gag on the chipotle 🙂

    • Postscript: Gary has been trying for the last half hour to find his way onto my lap but has been stymied because my chair is too high up. He just bolted over from clear across the apartment and leaped into my lap. I almost wanted to cheer for him because it was such a cool move but I had to give him a stern “no!”

    • Set rules early with Gary! He will get used to it soon enough and understand that just because you are there does not mean it is play time. As annoying as it will be the first week or so, don’t cuddle him while you work. Perhaps put a dog bed by your desk?

  • I Dont Get It

If you want a laugh to end the day google Man Poses as Target on Facebook, Trolls Haters of Its Gender-Neutral Move
and read the article in adweek. Epic!

    • palisades

oh my GOD hahahahahha. I am laughing so hard at these. The one where a lady brings up sharia law in Michigan is the best.

    • Many of the replies are kinda meh, but there a few that are brilliant and have made me LOL.

  • Rant: The bicyclist this morning at 14th and Q who hollered at me for trying to make a legal right turn on red because it impeded his ability to run the same red light.
