SMH. It’s getting to be quite the list of weekend shootings every Monday morning lately.

  • NoMa has always been a dangerous area but seems like an uptick lately.

It might need another computer-generated new name soon.

    • This is not NoMa. This neighborhood is referred to as Near Northeast, or in real estate terms “Capitol Hill North” (ha). I live a few blocks away and generally there isn’t much violent crime- certainly very few homicides. It’s very concerning that this seems to be a growing trend this summer.

  • Walked past the scene of the shooting 20 minutes beforehand and saw the usual group of people drinking on a rowhouse stoop and a child in an inflatable pool. Anyone know if that house was the target? NBC 4 reporting one adult dead.

Ding ding ding. We have a winner. Folks, shootings like this generally don’t happen at random. They happen because of a beef between different groups of thugs. If you’re not hanging out with thugs and doing criminal activities like drugs, prostitution, etc. you’re not likely to be a victim of homicide in this city. And regarding summer, there’s always an uptick in crime in the summer, especially near nightlife areas on the weekends, so keep alert!

      • Fine but this past week alone we’ve seen that guy stabbed multiple times in Shaw for not giving up his bike ans the brutal 40+ stabbing murder and robbery on Metro outside NoMa station. Not to mention all the earlier assaults on the Met Branch Trail.

Let’s not pretend violent crime only strikes those involved in it.

That’s why I said keep alert.

          • How do you “stay alert” regarding someone willing to stab you 40 times for an iPhone? Give up your career as an advice columnist/victim blamer.

          • brookland_rez

SMH that’s exactly why you shouldn’t have your iPhone out playing with it on the metro unless you’re prepared to fight for it. Move back to the suburbs.

There was no indication that he had it out. You having a bad day or something?

    • is this the house on 3rd right across from Parker where the dudes just sit outside on the porch all day and night, every day?

    • the child was sitting in the pool when the shooting occurred, probably about 5-7 feet away.

Sounds like the victim was specifically targeted because he lived in the basement of the house with the kiddie pool.

    • According to one of the news station accounts, the murder was right in front of the kid in the pool.

  • Getting nervous! These recent shootings seem to have resulted in the “target” being hit, but remember Shaw and Anacostia — the mom and the journalist –where innocent folks got hit instead.

Yes, I talk a lot about social exclusion here, but the police also need to get out of their cars and walk the streets! I just see them sitting in SUVs with the windows up and a/c on. Get out there — make friends, know the community, be visible.

    • Something tells me that the police already “know the community” engaging in such violent behavior and that those people likely don’t want to befriend the police.

      • Probably not, but more engagement between the police and residents would encourage non-criminal residents to report things to the police.

  • Rave: wrapping up another Drink City interview tonight.
Rant: need suggestions of great DC bartenders for future Drink City pieces.

  • Article on Hill Now says that a woman was assaulted by a man wielding a brick at the 500 block of H NE at 9:30 AM yesterday morning….

WaPo is reporting a shooting late Saturday night at the Flats 130 apartments (140 M St NE) wherein a man came home to find his apartment in the midst of being burgled; the perps shot him twice on the way out.

…and I see now that there is a separate post on this incident. I’m apparently having a tough time keeping up with all the shootings.

  • My boyfriend and I live two blocks from here. Ike many people in the area, we walk down and up 3rd to get to Giant at H, passing right by this house; I remember noticing the inflatable pool coming back from a quick trip to the store Saturday night. We were out that evening and returned home at 10:45 to find 3rd Street blocked off at K. There was a huge police presence and lots of residents outside, but we didn’t know what had happened. Just after this we saw an ambulance leave the scene without its lights or sirens. At the time I thought this meant it wasn’t serious, and I felt so sad learning the next day that it was actually because there was nothing that could be done for the victim.

This is a safe stretch, with people always walking around. I hope the police are able to identify and catch the person(s) who’s trying to take that and another man’s life away from all of us.
