  • looks like some pixels did it.

  • terrible. makes me sad and angry all at the same time. That’s a spot that I ride past to and from work on my bicycle. I will be cautious and on the lookout for these hoodlums.

  • Is the victim okay? Hopefully, he escaped with just a headache.

  • This is right near the new(ish) SaVerna building right? Just south of Sursum Corda?

    • Yes. I’m all for affordable housing, but why they keep packing low-income housing into that one area is beyond me. Haven’t they learned anything?

      • I think the SaVerna is actually the result of a plan by the city/developers to take what was lower income housing and replace it with mixed income housing. This topic has been covered a lot on PoP before and there is a pretty good WaPo article about the disaster that deal became. All those empty lots around there were once housing. Developers entered into agreements to tear it all down and redevelop it and some of those people would return and it would mix in with higher income folks and not aggregate poverty. Great plan except apparently all that land has restrictions on it from HUD that it can only be used for low income housing. So now you have a bunch of empty lots. Sursum Corda was originally part of that deal and apparently they backed out. So, the plan was to avoid doing exactly what you said, but apparently there are several reasons why that did not happen.

I’m unsure what the makeup is for people who live in the SaVerna. It seems like a pretty nice building, but there are definitely some less nice parts of that area. I don’t think I would walk through there much after dark alone.

  • Not sure I’d call this a Vicious Assault, I think in DC vernacular, this is called “getting jumped.”

    • The guy appears to have had his head slammed into the sidewalk, at which point he was punched and appears to be out cold. In what world is that not a vicious assault?

      • In the world of someone who’s trying to portray himself/herself as “more badass than thou.”

        • Under DC law, when a victim is knocked unconscious, it is classified as an aggravated assault (felony), no matter if there were injuries or not.

    • “Getting jumped” might mean taking a couple of punches, but that guy got knocked out cold. And then hit while he’s down. That’s vicious. I’m not even sure how that happened while running – maybe he got hit with an object or something.

      • HaileUnlikely

The taller guy who initially runs past the victim when he goes down punches the victim in the side of the head 12 seconds into the video.

      • It’s hard to tell but it looks to me like he got knocked out from his head hitting the ground, not from a punch.

        • HaileUnlikely

Agreed its hard to tell, but he looked pretty much limp as he was falling, and it appeared to me that he landed mainly on his side and shoulder, and then his head just flopped down, as if he was already out. Also note that he is basically staggering when he enters the frame at the beginning of the video – I suspect he had been knocked around quite a bit already.

  • Makes me SO MAD! At lunch today I saw some kids break into a car across from the Zoo, not a care in the world. What is going on? wish this video was better, it’s almost a joke that someone could pick someone out in that, but I guess it’s better than nothing. anyone know about the victim?

  • This looks like a drug deal gone bad. The muggers are clearly reaching into the victim’s sock for something. Likely drugs.

    • Good call. He’s probably a rival street dealer. Cash + product + a nice watch + a phone = a pretty substantial haul for these kids.

    • Could be. But taking a shoe in DC is like taking a scalp — and prevents the discalced victim from loping off anywhere further.
