Periodic explosion/boom in Columbia Heights?

“Has anyone else heard the sudden, huge booms happening in Columbia Heights over the last few days? The first time it happened it set off car alarms on my street, but I never hear sirens or anything afterwards. It happens in the middle of the day and the middle of the night.

Anyone have any idea what it could be? It scares the shit out of me every time! Especially the ones at night.”

  • We thought we heard something like this from near Meridian Hill Park at around 10pm on Monday night. The kind of noise that could either be an explosion 8 blocks away or a dumpster being dropped/slammed/moved 2 blocks away– tough to discern.

    • Definitely heard the same thing on Monday night. It was really loud. Also near the park.

    • me too! I first heard it Friday night around 1am and it woke me up and scared the shit out of me. I was so disoriented and convinced it was a bomb 😛

      • ditto! took me forever to fall asleep after i ran through all the scary scenarios in my head of what it could have been.

  • This just happened over my house in Petworth – it sounded like a plane was hovering right over my roof.

  • Pile driver from a construction site? Those things are loud and sound like explosions.

  • 4th of July is around the corner.

  • A similar issue was discussed a few years ago, IIRC, and it was the Old Guard practicing the cannon shots for the 4th of July events downtown. I think everyone was surprised how far the sound really carried from Arlington.

    • The Old Guard wouldn’t be firing at night except for Twilight Tattoo and that starts at 7 pm. Also they don’t fire a solo shot they fire multiple round salutes so you wouldn’t hear just one.

  • Last year I heard what I thought was an explosion outside my house. I rushed to look out the window, and, across the street, they were tearing out some concrete steps and dropping them into an empty dumpster from 10 feet up in the air. They continued to do so for the next 10-20 minutes, and the noise subsided once the dumpster had enough dampening concrete inside.

  • I actually posted this Q on the DC subreddit last night, and someone mentioned that kids in the area often set off M80s in dumpsters–which totally makes sense considering the randomness of the explosion sounds and the proximity to 4th of July.

  • I hear these booms from my apartment in Shaw all the time. Usually I look outside and see some smoke rising from some firecrackers. Probably it’s just some kids blowing things up as kids are wont to do.

  • Sometimes when a garbage truck drops a dumpster on the ground after emptying it, the sound is just like a car bomb going off. It took me a while to get used to it when I came back from Iraq.

  • It’s the M80s.
