Anticipation – It’s Official “same-sex couples be allowed to marry no matter where they live”!!


Update: From the Washington Post:

“The Supreme Court on Friday delivered an historic victory for gay rights, ruling 5-4 that the Constitution requires that same-sex couples be allowed to marry no matter where they live and that states may no longer reserve the right only for heterosexual couples.”

  • I agree, it’s a really great day. Just in time for NYC Pride, which is all weekend long!
    However, there’s an interesting dissent from Roberts:
    “If you are among the many Americans–of whatever sexual orientation–who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision. Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not Celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.”

    • Scalia’s dissent is just brutal:
      The opinion is couched in a style that is as pretentious as its content is egotistic. It is one thing for separate con- curring or dissenting opinions to contain extravagances, even silly extravagances, of thought and expression; it is something else for the official opinion of the Court to do so. *
      * If, even as the price to be paid for a fifth vote, I ever joined an opinion for the Court that began: “The Constitution promises liberty to all within its reach, a liberty that includes certain specific rights that allow persons, within a lawful realm, to define and express their identity,” I would hide my head in a bag. The Supreme Court of the United States has descended from the disciplined legal reasoning of John Marshall and Joseph Story to the mystical aphorisms of the fortune cookie.

      It cracks me up how each Justice pretends that the Constitution is like a crystal ball into which only he/she can see.

      Every Scalia dissent just screams “I’m a whiny little baby!” to me.

    It’s amazing how hard it is to get a government founded on separation of church and state to actually follow that ideal. Bravo SCOTUS, now about those 4 dissenting members…

  • it’s amazing how quickly the times are changing. I just got back from a trip to Seattle where I bought legal weed from a retail shop. Then I awaken to see the SCOTUS rule in favor of gay marriage. Never thought I’d see either of these things actually happen.
