DTLR closes at 14th and U to Make Room for SoulCycle

DTLR ( Downtown Locker Room) closed on Saturday to make way for a SoulCycle opening this Fall:

““SoulCycle 14th Street will feature a 3,400 square-foot, 56-bike studio, home to the signature SoulCycle workout, and an expansive SoulCycle lifestyle boutique, selling SoulCycle’s original clothing collection. Additional rider amenities include full men’s and women’s locker rooms with four showers each, multiple bathrooms, and locker area. SoulCycle 14th Street will be located at 14th and U at 1935 14th Street, NW, D.C. 20009. SoulCycle 14th Street will open in Fall 2015.”

  • I look forward to shopping at the “expansive SoulCycle lifestyle boutique, selling SoulCycle’s original clothing collection.” Because once I start wearing that stuff, I’m gonna leave my mark in this town.

  • They must be really counting on the brand name with something like four other cycling places up and down 14th

    • Everything I’ve read about them makes it clear their brand has quickly become the 500lb gorilla of spin, like Lululemon to yoga clothes. This location is going to crush it.

  • There are 56 bikes for 56 people but only four showers per locker room?

  • If SoulCycle replacing DTLR isn’t the very picture of gentrification, I don’t know what is.

    • Was thinking the same thing when I saw this thread last night.

    • I was getting my hair cut on Saturday and the barber next to me was all mad that DTLR was closing and was going on about all the sneakers he bought when he was younger and a total sneaker head. Then he closed with the best line “I’m so excited to shop at LL Bean, can’t wait!”

      I laughed – and then remembered I shop at LL Bean…

      To me the biggest case example was the Whole Foods replacing Murray’s on H St. But this one is a pretty good example too.

      • That’s also a good example of a newer, bigger, national retail chain kicking out an older, smaller local business.

    • not sure why this would be gentrification of anything… an athletic store being replaced by an athletic/training facility. the athletic consumers of dtlr can now have a place to use all those sneakers and athletic apparel they purchased in ways they didn’t have before. everybody wins!

      • Perhaps you are not familiar with the vastly divergent customer bases of DTLR v. SoulCycle.

      • It’s really one kind of overpriced junk replacing another. High end athletic shoes are lousy value and a cycling studio (with overpriced cycling clothes to match), duh, why not just get a bike Good to know it’s as pretentious/ludicrous as Lululemon.

    • Kind of my sentiments too. I don’t quite understand the market for these kinds of places or why they need to be in such valuable ground floor busy-street facing locations. Meanwhile, I can’t find a place to buy a bathroom rug or get a decent piece of pie in this section of 14th Street.

      • Bathroom rug: West Elm, Ace. Pie: Ted’s Bulletin.
        They are in such valuable ground floor space because they can actually afford the rent.

      • If you are selling a lifestyle, it helps to put that lifestyle on display. Hence the “need” to be on a ground floor, facing the street. People walk by that huge open window and see 56 cyclists doing their thing. The program sells itself.
        Great example of what’s old is new. Spinning has been around for ages.

      • You should try Home Rule. Lots of bathroom rugs to choose from. And most restaurants on 14th street sell pie (pie is the new cupcake ). Now personally I’m not sure why bathroom rugs and pies should occupy ground floor busy street-facing locations??

      • How often do you need to buy a bathroom rug? And, how urgently? Is this some sort of retail crisis that the District needs to prioritize?

        Pie, yes, pie should be freely and plentifully available. But, this ain’t Wisconsin, so make do.

        • Just an example of two things that I find myself leaving the neighborhood for–sometimes even going to the suburbs to get. An example too of the kind of retail diversity that might serve a wider cross-section of the neighborhood, invite window shopping and casual engagement, and spark a kind of neighborhood friendliness that I find missing on 14th Street.

          • @MarkQ. Unfortunately a retail establishment cannot survive on window shopping and “casual engagement”. They actually have to sell stuff to make money.
