“There has been an uptick in burglaries in the Brookland neighborhood”

From MPD:

“There has been an uptick in burglaries in the Brookland neighborhood. On April 1, 2015 two subjects broke into a home in the 1400 block of Hamlin Street NE. An alert neighbor observed this and called the police. Units converged quickly on the location and the two subjects were caught. Many thanks to the neighbor who called MPD. It is my experience that one or two bad guys are usually responsible for several burglaries. I hope that we will see some decreases as a result of these arrest.”

  • Props to the cops AND the neighbors!

My unlamented former husband was a federal agent. When we moved to Logan Circle in the late 1980s, he said that it would be safe, since the “bad guys” went to “good” neighborhoods since there was more to steal there. This was the only intelligent thing he ever said. As neighborhoods get better, crime appears to increase. Perhaps this is why it’s on the rise in Brookland.

    • I’m not sure if it increases or if it just tends to get more attention. I try to attend neighborhood meetings when I can, and from what the cops say overall crime is way down in Brookland compared with a few years ago. But there are more people living here now as well, and along with a lot of active long-time residents it probably results in more reports and more pressure on MPD than in some other places.

That’s been my concern as well. I’ve been in Brookland 6 years and compared to other places in DC I’ve lived, it’s been pretty quiet. Now that people are paying high $$ to live here I hope it doesn’t attract the criminals.

  • Is there way to contact the police regarding these suspects? Like a dummy I forgot to lock my car luckily all that was stolen was some sunglasses but this occurred on April 1st not to far from 14th and Hamlin.
