Heads Up on Hummus Recall

From the Petworth Parents listserv:

“Heads up neighbors that my husband and I both got sick with all the symptoms of listeria after eating this exact hummus purchased at the Safeway in Petworth. Check your labels against the FDA listing.”

Sabra Dipping Co., LLC announced that it is voluntarily recalling approximately 30,000 cases of its Classic Hummus due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This measure is limited to five SKUs of Classic Hummus sold nationwide. To date, no other Sabra product is affected by this recall.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

To date, there have been no reports indicating that these products have caused any illness.

The products being recalled are listed below and were distributed to retail outlets, including food service accounts and supermarkets, in the U.S. Consumers can find code and use by dates on the top of each package.

  • How quickly did you get sick? We also bought one there, and our kids have had quite a bit of it before we noticed the recall.

  • ugh I really need to get back to making my own

  • This is pretty much going to kill the Sabra brand. Oh well.

    • Unlikely. Memories are short. How many recalls has Perdue chicken had over the years? (Many.) And they’re going strong.
Or even if Sabra sees a troublesome dip in sales (see what I did there?) they can just change the packaging, market under a different name. If the price is right, people will buy it.

      • Agreed. Most household brands have been recalled at some point. This doesn’t sound like anything out of the ordinary in terms of contamination (just standard listeria!), so I doubt people would be turned off long term.

  • I’m glad the Supremely Spicy flavor wasn’t affected. I can’t live without that stuff.

  • Your purchase also directly supports the Israeli military…which hurts more than listeria.
