  • This row was built in 1891 and is typical of that time. Stone facades were common on upscale houses. The other characteristic that makes them “hobbit houses” is that you enter at ground level, which is unusual. That strips the buildings of their grandiosity.

    I went to a party in one of them in 1992. I remember watching my acquaintances dancing to Nirvana and thinking, “Hmmmm, I guess this is a thing now.”
