“Decrepitude at Hiatt Place NW”

“Dear PoPville,

Does anyone know what the waka is going on with 3228 Hiatt Pl NW? When it was last featured on PoPville back in 2011, it was nominated for the Horse’s Ass, which may have spurred on the property’s owners to achieve even greater levels of decrepitude. Rather than just letting it rot, they’ve been actively tearing off architectural details, and making and then “patching” mystifying holes in the brick facade and window openings. It’s sad to see what’s been done to this once-handsome building, and I can’t find any recent info online about the property.

I’m not normally a historic preservationist hand-wringer type, but walking by this building almost daily puts it on my mind a lot. My curiosity finally got the better of me, so I thought I’d ask around.

Thanks for any insights!”

workers were in and out all winter, every time i went outside to smoke, I saw them smoking. and I know they are reinforcing the back end…I’m assuming it’s condos, but who knows.

  • I believe the property across the street is a half-way house. I have called the police before to report a baggie from a hospital pharmacy with someone’s pills (and hospital wristband) in it. Next door to this property is a still-under-construction-after-3-years fancy glass-fronted loft. Hiatt Place is also notable for the volume of car window glass on the sidewalk – seems like at least twice a month the cars parked there overnight are broken into.

    • Three years? Try more like six.

      • Six? more like 10! I don’t remember either place being anything but empty since I moved to the neighborhood in the fall of 2004.

A friend of mine lived in that building up until his death in September 2006, and I know it was open for a little while after that.

          So, about 8 years.

My pootch finds this place to be quite mysterious. He likes to pee all over it.

  • I used to live on Park Road and I could never quite figure out this place or the ones around it. Back in 2009 or 2010, they replaced all the window frames and put in new wood columns throughout the building but they didn’t properly seal the windows so snow and rain drifted in. Every once and a while, a guy would show up at random hours to walk around the place. Quite sketchy.

  • This house has been an issue for over a decade. Classic slumlord conditions…. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/06/AR2007090602485.html
