Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

    Rave: Happy Tet!
Rant: Guess who managed to get her self-pierced nose infected? Who could possibly have guessed this would happen?
Silly: Eldest Zelda also seems to think that a wig is the best way to deal with the fact that her rainbow-dyed hair is not allowed at her new job. I am not buying you a wig, child. Just go back to brown.
Query: Whatever shall I rant about when Eldest Zelda goes off to college? (I don’t want to know!)

  • binpetworth

Rant: WTF is happening with the west side exit at the Georgia Ave/Petworth metro? I know that they were repairing one escalator, and at least one of the two others was always stopped, but it annoying not to have any signage inside/outside the station until you’re practically upon the yellow tape.
Rave: Well, at least I avoided the Red Line fiasco this morning?

  • epric002

rant: did not get a chance to confront glassbowls who do not shovel the corner of shepherd and kansas because
rave: forgot we had our tax appt last night. refund should cover the cost of a new boiler!
rant: i am excited about a new boiler. what is wrong with me?
    rant: too cold.
    rant: duke.

    • +1 to Rant: Duke

    • binpetworth

Oooh, can I be there when you confront them? (the owners/renters of that house on the corner)
I’ve thought about leaving a note, but then I’ve also secretly thought about going out there and shoveling it myself, then leaving all of the excess snow blocking their door/car or something, so they know how it feels!

      • epric002

sure 🙂 i know that they’re tenants, so my plan is to ask them why they haven’t shoveled. if they say it’s the owner’s responsibility then i’m going to ask them for his contact info and i’m going to start harassing him about it, b/c i am OVER not being able to walk that block every time it snows.

  • Rant: A certain embassy located in eastern Dupont whose burglar/fire alarm was blaring and strobing all night. MPD posted a unit to watch the property, but apparently no one could turn it off. Grrr…

  • Rave: PoPville happy hour! Great to see everyone/meet new people, as always. 🙂
Rant: One too many beers and I am sooo sleepy this morning because of it…

  • Rant: Amended dc return took a month to come back from a bad address.
Rant: The bad address is the one on the form.
Rave/rant: Hope new address is correct, but I fear it’s not.
    Rave: Feeling a bit better.
    Rave: Rescheduled interview is tomorrow.

  • Rave: Starting work on Monday!
Rant: Too cold for the barn to celebrate. No horses makes me cranky.
Rave: Book club survey sent out – hoping to get started soon!
Rave: New manager seems really good and is totally supportive about working around a pre-planned trip to Chile and Argentina.
Rave: Hiking the W circuit in Torres del Paine in less than a month :-D.

  • Rant: A bad fall about 20 years ago is coming back to haunt me. My heals have been hurting lately and X-Rays show major damage to them that require surgery.

The only thing I can think of is when I went to Mississippi with Habitat for Humanity for Spring Break while in college. While I on a scaffold, someone who was getting off lost her balance and pulled loose a board. I went flying off and the board’s edge landed on my heals. Went to the hospital and they said I had a sprain ankle (no X-Ray taken) and sent me on my way.

  • Rant: Didn’t get to finish my homework last night because:
Rant: Been helping a friend with her glassbowl boyfriend issues. It’s been a year and a half and things haven’t gotten better…. ugh. Hopefully this is the time she realizes that.
Rant: Was late for work because bus was late and packed, so I bailed and took the metro, then metro was delayed and packed, and I had to take a cab. SUCH AN EXPENSIVE COMMUTE. When will WMATA get their act together? Oh, right. Never. They’ll just keep taking our money…
Rave: Ski weekend. Not going to worry about anything from Friday night through Sunday morning 🙂

  • Rant: d00k + the rat king
Rave: That one dook fan at the bar that turned all the neutral parties into UNC fans because of her insistence on being just plain awful.
    Rave: first post!
Rant: can’t find a good #tbt to post
Rave: i get to wfm tomorrow!

  • laduvet

Rave: Applications for grad school are submitted
Rant: Moving into my temporary tiny studio – slowly box by box down the hall
Rave: The idea of moving to London is making me purge everything!!!

    • Yay London! I lived there 2013-2014 and loved it (for grad school). So exciting for you – best of luck and enjoy the hell out of it!

    • Yay London! I also moved there for grad school (came back after I finished in 2012). So wonderful! I should have purged more beforehand…

  • Question: Would like to plan a scavenger hunt proposal that ends in a photo booth. Does anyone know where there are photo booths in the DC area?

    • There was a post asking about photo booths a little while back. popville.com/2014/11/dear-popville-any-bars-in-dc-with-photo-booths/
      Good luck! 😀

    • emvee

I have a friend that does photo booths at weddings and other events. I’m sure he’d be happy to work something out with you, if you’d like! You can get my contact info from Dan and I can shoot you my friend’s email and phone.

Congrats, by the way! So exciting!

  • Rave: Leaving the cold behind, at least for a week. Forecast for Saturday in Port au Prince is 88 degrees.
But: Now I have to worry about coming home and finding a bird in my house. And if I’m not home to let it out right away, bird poop everywhere.

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: forgot to turn the big radiator on last night, so it got a bit chilly in the small hours of the morning.
Rave: Donna has learned to be a portable heater, she curled up on my toes most of the night, but spend the colder part of the morning under the covers with me.
Rave: extra snuggles with the kitty b/c it’s my scheduled telework day!
Hope everyone had fun last night!

  • Rave: I’m 30!
Rave x2: Awesome family, good friends, best dog ever, home ownership & no more job I hate.
    Rant: none today 🙂

  • Rave: a good friend of mine got engaged and I am super thrilled for him and his fiance.
Rave: no one was parked in front of me this morning, so liberating my car from its ice cave was even easier than anticipated.
Rave: I had an excellent time at happy hour, thanks for organizing Shawess! It was good meeting you and some other new people.
Rave: got to work early and had a productive meeting with my boss.
Rant: The weather. I have to endure this miserable cold for another week before my Florida vacation. I need to get a timer for my heated mattress pad, I can’t take this cold.

  • Rave: for those of you following the saga of Gary dog (-not- Gary husband, as Pablo thought!), I wanted to mention that we tried Wagtime daycare yesterday and were over the moon about it. Over the long weekend, when we spent most of the time in the house with the dog, all of his minor behavioral issues — barking a lot, biting, following us everywhere even if it meant getting stepped on — basically vanished. So we pretty much confirmed that they were linked to him being left alone too long during the day. He also came back from day care yesterday completely exhausted and sweet as can be. We’ll be back for sure.
Rave: Got some really good advice at the HH about the Big Family Decision. Even though we still don’t have the info we need to make said decision, we’re getting closer and are almost ready to make it as soon as we have the remaining details.
Rant: Really missed a bunch of you last night at the HH, most notably Emilie and Textdoc, although Textdoc had a really good excuse to bail.

  • Andie302

Rave: HH last night! Great to see everyone and Shawess thank you for organizing and for the Gary siting 🙂
Rave: Heading out tomorrow for five days of warm weather….so excited.
Rant: My best friend is going through a mess with her marriage. Her husband is a very talented chef that quit his job hastily after a year or more of extreme stress. He hasn’t found anything else, in part because he’s being super picky. She is carrying the financial load and it’s stressing her out. I offered to let her use a flight credit and pay the difference for her to come for a girls weekend next month, but she won’t accept this gift. I understand – she’s depressed, the money would stress her out, she’s worried that she would just be anxious during the whole trip, she feels like she can’t take this trip and then expect her husband to skip a bach. party and then a wedding of a close friend. It’s just a mess. I’m trying to be supportive as I can – I just don’t know what to do. They are both grieving the fairly recent loss (within the last 2 & 4 years) of parents on top of all this. I have encouraged them both for months to seek therapy, I think they are finally pulling the trigger. Anyone have additional suggestions? I don’t think this is a marriage-ender (based on what she’s said), which appears to be the silver lining.

    • Great to see you too! And enjoy your trip 🙂
As for your friend, it sounds like you are already doing a lot to support her in a legitimately tough time. I know it’s frustrating that she doesn’t want to accept your girls weekend offer, especially since she probably would feel better spending time with her good friends. But I’m not sure you need to do anything more than you’re already doing — being there, listening, offering help and advice. If you feel the need to do more, maybe you could treat her to something a lot smaller that will feel like a reasonable indulgence — a massage or mani-pedi or something. But really I think you’re already doing the most important things.

    • Andie302

Additional rant: The IRS. They have so royally screwed up my AND my ex husband’s tax situation that I don’t even know where to start. At least we’re still civil so we can untangle this mess – but he’s already spent 2.5 hours on the phone and is out $4K, and I can’t even imagine how long this latest mistake (withholding $1500 of my federal return) is going to take to fix. Also lucky that I am dating an accountant. This makes me want to have a drink. (The IRS, not the accountant 🙂 )

    • Could a local girls’ weekend be arranaged? Sleepover at your place + staycation type activities?

      • Andie302

I wish – we’re flying to Mississippi because one of the girls lives there, another in DE, another in NYC, and one here in DC. We had everyone together at New Year’s here, so I doubt I’ll get them all together again here any time soon. Maybe we can do that the next time the one in MS comes back! Hopefully by then she’ll be feeling much better.

        • Bummer 🙁

        • Blithe

If you’re sure that your best friend would welcome the chance to spend time with all of you, and you’re willing to use your flight credit and pay the difference for her ticket to Mississippi, would it be an option at some point to do a meet up locally as mtpresident suggested — and use the flight credit for the friend in Mississippi, since the others live relatively close? If your Mississippi friend can swing it, it might be easier to persuade her — than it would be to persuade your best friend who’s depressed and stressed. You sound like a very supportive, very involved friend. It must be tough for you to feel like you can’t do more to help . I think that Shawess made some excellent suggestions — about continuing to be there emotionally for your friend, and including her in smaller treats. Maybe “extra tickets” and “coupons” for special treats in the guise of providing you with company and support would be easier for your friend to accept?

  • I Dont Get It

Rave: DC refund came in 6 days. Fed came in 7 days! Thanks TurboTax!
Rave2: I’m enjoying my first week of Hello Fresh meals.
Rave3: Wiccan Housesitters Say the Darndest Things:
WH: I need to do laundry tonight.
    IDGI: Why?
WH: I threw up on my sheets having sex today.

    (Yes I was sorry I asked )

  • Rant: Sad that I missed the Popville happy hour
Rave: I missed happy hour to have dinner with my adopted mom. It was good to catch up.
Rant: This cold. I am ready for spring. I am sick of wearing two layers of pants to work. I feel like the Michelin tire man.

  • JayKay

Rave: PoPville happy hour! It was great talking with everyone.
Rant: PoPville happy hour. So did not want to get up this morning. 🙂
Trying to be less of a lurker/cyber stalker so i registered and even added a pic.

  • rant: feel like my head is full of cotton batting. I only stayed up until midnight too. I wish I had that no-sleep gene sometimes.
rave: going to see bestie in her play tonight! and chocolate afterwards
rant: my bf was originally going to come / give me a ride but he messed up getting the day off from work so… he’s not
rave: bestie’s brother is going to give me a ride instead lol.

  • Becks

Rave: I had a BLAST at Mardi Gras! I saw lovely buildings, ate delicious food, listened to melodious Jazz, and wandered the streets of the French Quarter. Oh, and I gots me some beads! And King Cake!
Rave: Lady Carlotta really missed me and hung by my side all day yesterday and even let me brush her without scratching me.
Rave: The sidewalk was clear when I returned home.
Rant: A bird was nesting next to my door in the leaves when I got home. I was worried it had died on my doorstep (never a good sign), but it was just asleep. I gently woke him and shooed him away from the door so I could go in.
Rant: Bad Neighbors threw lime rinds onto the lovely blanket of white snow in my backyard!!! Now I have Green, soon to be rotting, lime rinds dotting the white snow!

  • Rave: moonboots @ flash last night… was a nice party
Rant: fell asleep on the floor when i got home
Rave: although i was on the floor i did sleep right by the fire all night and that provided for a DEEP sleep
Rant: tonights cold… hope nobody is left outside over night, i couldnt imagine because there arent ernough blankets in the world

  • Rave: Had a wonderful time last night at the unofficial PoPville happy hour, seeing Gary, and putting faces to names.

    Rave: It’s Thursday already.

Rave: Getting started tutoring children with Horton’s Kids next week!

    • It was so nice to meet you and I hope you’ll keep posting regularly 🙂

    • Good meeting you too, neighbor! 🙂

    • Horton’s Kids is great! Are you doing Monday or Tuesday nights? I’m a Monday nighter. It’s such a great program. I honestly get as much out of it as (we hope) the kids get. I like working with the younger kids because big kid homework scares me. And because littles say the darnedest things!

    • It was so great to meet you all! Looking forward to going to the next HH. 🙂

I’m also gonna be a Monday full-timer for Horton’s Kids! Unfortunately they have a surplus of volunteers right now, so I’ll be a floater for a few weeks. Really looking forward to getting started next Monday.

  • Rant: I had been looking forward to the PoPville HH and to the Nightmares on Wax DJ set at U Street Music Hall, but missed them both because I overdid at home lifting heavy stuff.
Rave: Eventually the ibuprofen kicked in.
Rave: My doctor is great — finally saw her yesterday about the lower back pain (unrelated to the above) that I’d been dealing with for several weeks. She gave me a printout of some physical therapy exercises and sent me for an x-ray. I also asked her about the pain I’ve had in my right hand from too much litter-picking (I was using a “grabber” device). Turns out it’s tendinitis and it’s not permanent!! So relieved.

    • Andie302

Sorry we missed you! Glad you got to see the doctor and have a good course forward! And that’s AWESOME about the pain not being permanent.

      • Yeah — I was afraid that my anti-litter fervor had caused me permanent injury, which was just one more reason to hate litter, litterers, and neighbors who can’t be bothered to pick up litter in front of their houses. 😉
Sorry to have missed you too — sounds like last night’s HH was a nice mix of regulars and new people/lurkers, with bonus dachshund puppy!

        • Andie302

Confession: I read this as CAT litter picking and assumed you were spot cleaning a cat litter container with some kind of fancy tool.

        • I think we know what to get you for your next birthday, Textdoc 😀

          amazon. com /36-Inch-Pick-up-Grabber-Aluminum-Handle/dp/B0035880K6

          • OP Anon, I already have a very similar item:
The problem was that — determined to pick up every last piece of litter on my street, once a week, for over a year — I apparently gave myself tendinitis with it.

          • Allison

I saw something very special the other day that made me think of you Textdoc (and shake my head.) At a bus stop, a woman was holding a disposable cup. Having finished her drink, she looked around for a trashcan. She did not find a trashcan nearby, and decided the most appropriate way to deal with her cup was to BURY IT IN THE SNOW. I was thinking “you know when the snow melts it’s still going to be there, right?” If you’re going to litter, at least just own it and throw it on the ground! I did not confront said lady because I’ve had too many close calls confronting crazy people over little things.

          • That’s kind of hilarious in a horrifying way. What chutzpah!

    • Great news about finding a good doctor! That’s often the hardest part of treating a medical issue, in my experience. So glad to hear the hand problem isn’t permanent, too!

    • I Dont Get It

What were you lifting and why didn’t you ask me to help? 😉 I have freakishly long arms so we should put them to good use.

      • I was lifting some IKEA BENNO CD shelves that I was getting rid of via Craigslist. They aren’t even heavy; I must’ve just lifted them improperly.
How can I shanghai you into helping me if you continue to lurk and never come to happy hours? 😉

    • +5000 for Nightmares on Wax! I can’t believe I didn’t see that they had a show coming up.

      • It’s possible it was scheduled on short-ish notice. It wasn’t on my radar until the other week, but I just assumed that I hadn’t been checking the U Hall website frequently enough.

  • Hello dears. I’m back. Mardi Gras was lovely– 70 degrees most of the time, and the kids had a blast. Must remember to take along an extra suitcase next time, because they didn’t want to part with a single bead or moon pie when it was time to pack up.
Came home to a lovely big surprise: the corner around the abandoned store near my house had been thoroughly shoveled, and wasn’t its usual post-snow expanse of icy treachery. I wonder who’s to thank for that.

  • Rant: Child with a stomach virus. So much baby throw up. Why?!?!
Rant: It’s both a benefit and detriment of a child not in day care – they’re not sick as often, sure, but when they spend time with kids who are in day care, they start getting sick. Trying not to keep him away from every other child!
Rave: Child LOVES dad’s Prince of Petworth T-Shirt because of the frog on it. He points to it and laughs and laughs.
    Rant: Taxes….
Rave: Landlord we just moved away from already got his condo under contract. Now, you see, landlord? THIS is what we were trying to help you with!
Rant: Don’t have our security deposit back. Sooooo it’ll suck for him if he doesn’t return it.

  • skj84

Rant: bummed I missed PopVille Happy Hour last night! I got out rehearsal pretty late.

Rave: I did get to go to post rehearsal cast party. I hung out with my bestie for a bit.

Rant: Red wine headache. The abundant sunshine today isn’t helping.

  • RANT: Google Maps. They did another re-design of the web browser version and now lots of businesses are not appearing when you zoom in on the location. Ugh, so frustrating when web companies change their existing products as a “make work” exercise to justify a team’s existence/budget.

    • +1. The newest Google Maps seems to remember every business I’ve searched and shows those places most prominently. In some cases it’s helpful and in other cases it’s just weird or even creepy. I would rather the map be less personalized.

      • Ugh, that totally explains it!!!!! It’s showing businesses I’ve traveled to/searched recently, but not other ones that happen to be in the same area. Which is a pain in the butt when you’re, say, trying to find the name of another bar in Adams Morgan…

  • Rave: 2 hr delay. But I don’t understand why if the temp only increased by 1 degree in that time and none of the roads received any more treatment.
Rant: the expectation that I get as much done in 45 minutes with my kids as I normally would in 2 hours

  • Rant: Had to report and block someone for the first time on OKC after he sent some particularly rude/harassing messages totally unprompted. Stuff that would make it on to the #byefelipe page. Still kind of creeped out that he can still see my profile…
Rave: Date tonight with a (hopefully) much more normal guy.
Rave: New Orleans so soon! Any recommendations for food or other activities??

    • I love Frenchman St in the Marigny, which is basically right next to the French Quarter. If you like jazz there are a ton of great clubs in just a few blocks- Spotted Cat, Maison, DBA, Blue Nile, etc. I once got stuck in the middle of a legit brass band battle there.
Eat at Adolfos above Apple Barrel, also on Frenchman, the seafood is awesome.
I loved Cochon, but reservations can be hard to get.
Do not overlook Cafe du Monde, beignets are like puffy clouds of wonder and happiness. I like to stop in every 12 hours when I’m there.
      I’m jealous, have fun!

    • Blech on creepy/harassing messages. I’ve only needed to report one guy on there so far – he sent a message just saying “Run as far as you possibly can…” Rather freaky. @____@
Good luck with the date tonight, hope it goes well!

      • Ew, so creepy!

      • Thanks!

And wow, that is super creepy. This guy was just mean after I apparently didn’t respond to his initial message the way he thought I should. I’m not sure if anything happens to them when they get reported, but I think it is weird that blocking them only prevents you from receiving messages, not blocking them from your profile or from being able to send the messages to begin with.

        • I definitely agree with that. My abusive ex found me on OKC (literally 15 minutes after I reopened my account after my last relationship ended) and messaged me. Ugh. I wish I could just stop him from seeing my account at all!

    • Becks

The Court of Two Sisters in the French Quarter is wonderful! They make Banana Fosters at your table. Go during the day so you can see the lovely the Court yard.

    • Jealous! [Of the trip, not the creepy OKC guy. Something about that site–that is the only site where I got messages that said only something like “I’d do you.’ Um, thanks?] Anyway, in New Orleans, I liked Coquette and a wine shop that is also a garden/restaurant, Bacchanal. I had kind of a ‘things to eat’ as well as a places list–beignets, muffalettas, crawfish, mmmm…

    • Emmaleigh504

+1 to all the Marigny suggestions.
In the Quarter the Verti Marte for poboys (the grilled shrimp is the best), they are good late night, lunch time, breakfast, anytime! For something a little fancier try Galatoire’s The have the best coffee in town and ll the food is divine.
If you go up town, head to Frankie and Johnny’s for fried bell pepper rings. They are heaven. Another uptown favorite is Commander’s Palace.

    • Thanks everyone for all the responses!! Will be checking them out tonight. Definitely #teamfrieddough and I feel like I have to at least try one while I’m down there!

  • Rant: Giuliani. Really, Rudy? Really?

  • Rant: Indecisive about what to make for dinner tonight: wonton soup (Chinese New Year appropriate, an opportunity to try the wontons we made last weekend) or asparagus fettuccini alfredo (rich and comforting, an opportunity to use up the asparagus and heavy cream that are languishing in the fridge).
Rave: I secretly enjoy the extreme cold. Hoping to get out tonight and photograph the frozen river.

    • emvee

Freeze the wontons and use the suspicious looking asparagus and could-go-bad-soon cream first! That way, you can just use the wontons in a few days.

  • Rave: Had a great time catching up at HH last night and meeting some new faces!
Rant: Trying to plan a formal dinner for 60 in NYC under $7500 is not working.

Question for SparklyKittyTacos– Just looked up the Nutrisca food and noticed it doesn’t come in a small breed version, are the pieces really big?

    • Andie302

The chef I mentioned in my rant may know of a place, and has plenty of time on his hands. I can shoot him an email if you would like.

    • “Trying to plan a formal dinner for 60 in NYC under $7500 is not working.” Out of curiosity, have you tried contacting hotels? When we were planning our wedding I noticed that hotels can have more competitive pricing than restaurants for events. They also can handle decorating and some other logistics in-house that you might have otherwise had to plan on your own.

    • Thank you both! We are now looking for a steakhouse in Midtown East for a corporate event. I have a couple of other quotes to present to our sponsor but we need a lower end quote as an option. Andie, if the chef has any recs I would absolutely take them! We actually worked with a tourism company to put out an RFP from hotels that included meal options and they came in a bit too high for us. It seems like April is a tough time to get any sort of deal in NY.

      • Andie302

I’ll send him an email. Did you try Carmine’s? Not sure if the location would work, but they’re very well equiped for large events here in DC, I would suspect they may also be able to handle that in NYC. I’ll post today if/when I get a response!

        • +1 for Carmines if this is formal enough. They do a really great job with big groups and have reasonable prices.

        • Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. We are doing Italian with this group the night before so we are trying to mix it up a bit.

    • Hmm, I don’t think the pieces are particularly big but I’ve never had a small dog so I’m not sure what small breed dog food looks like. :-/ Email me at sparklykittytacos at gmail and I can send you a picture of the kibble when I get home if that would help!

      • No worries! I think I will just go ahead and order a 4 lb bag and see how it goes. Thanks for the rec! I started to ease my dog back onto his food last night and that was a fail as of this morning.

    • Pablo Raw

Nice to meet you last night at the HH!

  • emvee

Rant: I am so sad I missed the HH last night.
Rant: I missed it because I very much think someone stole my SSN and I’m making the necessary calls to determine if that’s true.
Rave: Eight days and counting until I flee this winter wasteland for sunshine, beaches, and hiking around volcanoes.
Rave: I spent my snow day catching up on Better Call Saul. I was worried it wouldn’t live up to Breaking Bad, but I’m actually really into it. Vince Gilligan’s cinematography is wonderful.

  • Revel: Said good morning to Diane Rehm in the hallway at WAMU this morning!
Revel: Was there to record a listener testimonial promo for WAMU/Morning Edition!
Rant: COLD! Been in the office for almost an hour and still can’t feel my thighs…

  • Rant: Uncle passed away unexpectedly Sunday evening.
Rant: Nearly 5 months to the day after my brother passed away from cancer. My dad is inconsolable. Thanking the universe I just happened to be home with him, my mom and sister for the long weekend.
Rave/Rant: Making new friends and working to strengthen friendships with old ones, have a job I like, doing more creative writing, new hobbies, ended and moved on emotionally alarmingly quickly from a not-a-good fit 3.5 yr relationship back in June, all in all feeling happier than ever before… and feeling guilty/weird about it. Did lose it this morning packing up to go home for another funeral.

    • Oh man. So sorry to hear this. I’m glad you can be with your family right now. Take care of yourselves!

    • Oh wow. I’m so sorry for your loss. Life can really deal such unfair blows. I hope you and your family find comfort while your mourn.

  • Accountering

Anyone want a reservation for 2 to Rasika, either Saturday 2/21 at 7pm, or next Saturday 2/28 at 7pm? I made reservations 5 saturdays in a row for Andie and I, to make sure we could finally go, but we went a couple of weeks ago. Hate to just turn the reservation back in to Open Table if someone here wants it!

Rave: Finished my taxes last night, very relieved that I’ll be getting a nice refund. Was worried that my promotion last year would bump me into a new tax bracket, but after deductions my AGI stayed in the old bracket. Whew.
Rant: Questioning if said promotion has been worth it. It’s performance review time and I have no idea what to put in my work plan, because I have no idea if I want to stay in my current program area or move into something else.
Rave?: Wading into wedding planning. We’re thinking big cabin in the mountains, invite immediate family and close friends, and just have a big party. Anyone know of a good place to look for large cabins/lodges near Shenandoah or other areas? I’ve been through HomeAway, VRBO, and some google searches. I’ve found some options, but nothing that really hits home. I’d like somewhere with good scenery and that has a spot on the premises that would be good to do the ceremony. So hard to tell from looking at pictures online…

Otra Rave: Attn. Littlen and SparklyKittyTacos, we need to program the next Unofficial PoPville Karaoke.

  • Thanks for the photo feature, Popville! 🙂

  • Rant: Took cough medicine BEFORE bed last night and was STILL up for TWO HOURS coughing. I might have to try going to bed early to see if that gets me to sleep at a reasonable hour.
Rant: Went back to bed after wife & daughter left the house. Still feel tired afterwards. Oh, and said daughter was throwing an absolute fit at going downstairs without me so I gave in & hung out with them during breakfast. Oy.
Rave: It’s almost the weekend? I don’t think we have much planned?
Rant: unexpected need for another blood test tomorrow since yesterday’s results weren’t stellar. Argh.

are you sure it’s not whooping cough?

      • Oh man, that would suck. I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure it’s just a bad cold with a lingering cough. I’m barely coughing during the day–just at night. The cough is sometimes “productive” as it were and I thought whooping cough was more of a dry cough. Looking up pertussis symptoms now…

        • Now I’m a little freaked out. Starts like a cold? Ugh. I’m the only one in my house who isn’t recently vaccinated (bad reaction to the pertussis vaccine as a kid so I rely on herd immunity for this one). That said, my daughter had a cold last week & I’m pretty sure I got a cold from her. So now I’m crossing my fingers it’s just that. Argh.

          • The WC cough usually starts at the tail end of the cold-like symptoms, at which point the antibiotics are probably not going to do any good. And it’s not like other coughs that start with a tickle, and you can maybe clear your throat to scratch the itch. No, it’s more like one second you’re fine, and the next second, without any control on your part, you are doubled over like you want to forcibly expel your lungs. Then there’s the gagging, the wrung-out spasming lungs that can’t re-fill (which might lead to a whooping sort of inhalation, but that’s less common in adults), lather rinse repeat. For a month.
But there’s weight loss! So I hope you don’t have whooping cough, but if you do, you might like the results on your abs.

          • I don’t think the cough is quite that intense. The coughing spells are intense, but not lung-emptying intense. This has only been going on for about 4 nights so far….

my experience was very similar to miss patty’s. i’d get a tickle but there was NOTHING you could do about it other than cough and cough and cough while your eyes watered and you can’t catch your breath and you almost vomit. you can actually break ribs coughing as hard/as much as you do with pertussis.
but the narcotic cough syrup helps at night (which is when i had 90% of my coughing), so if you haven’t seen a dr yet i’d go even just to get that.

          • Ugh. I’ll consider checking in with a doctor. Depending on tomorrow’s blood test results, I’m not sure I can take a narcotic cough syrup. But I’ll check on it. Some colleagues had really bad colds/coughs that lasted weeks a couple of months ago & they also said that the cough syrup with codeine really helped.

          • Lol on the weight loss, though. This cold or whatever it is has totally demolished my appetite. I’m eating because I know I need to, but not because I’m hungry.

if you can’t take narcotic cough syrups see about getting benzonatate cough perles. they work really well.
