Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

Photo by PoPville flickr user  Miki J.

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

Great. I live near the Petworth shootings and work near this one. Fantastic.

  • Rave: yesterday’s bagel boy/Friday Girl drama (?) OMG so glad I went back to RRRR. LOVED it. Welcome, Friday Girl!!!!
Rant: Boss is here today. WHY?!
Rave: another job interview lined up
Rant: haven’t heard anything from my previous one – I got a call asking about my current salary and then radio silence
Rave: finally admitted that my inability to get any sleep is a problem and got a mild anti-depressant to hopefully help me over this hard time and MAYBE sleep. You know, until my son is 12 and wants to sleep all the time.

  • Pablo Raw

Rave: Non Official PoPville Orphans Holiday Dinner and Movie (NOPOHDM). Meeting tomorrow at 5:00 at Full Kee in Chinatown and then Movie at E Street at 7:00.
    Rant: at work
    Rant: rain
Rave: leaving early, working on my apartment to be able to turn it into a photo studio. Mini.

  • Rave: For the third year in a row, I found a free Christmas tree!

  • Rave: Friday Girl
    Rave: textdoc’s internet search/compilation skills.
Rant: At work today only because I didn’t finish something that I need to have done, and could and should have completed by now. No one to be irritated at but myself.
    Rave: Christmas!
    Rave: Ski trip!

  • Rave: Friday Girl.
Rant/rave: I’ve been in the office since 5am so I’m eating a delicious, giant Belgian waffle with Nutella and fresh fruit, yum.
Rave: Taking it slowly but have a good feeling about a new guy (but I’ve been wrong before. Ha).
Rant: We finally hired another woman in my office. I was really excited, but she keeps telling other coworkers that she’s intimidated by me and I scare her, that she doesn’t know how to get along with other women, and refuses to ask me any questions or speak to me directly. I don’t know what to do with that.

    • Where were you able to get that [waffle] ???

    • skj84

Glad you have another lady in your office! I’m still the only one on my team. I would have a chat with her. Maybe take her for coffee so you can have a friendly one on one?

    • Pablo Raw

IF she is an introvert, then I could give you some advice. Basically respect her bubble and acknowledge her presence. Only talk to her when it’s extremely necessary. Offer her a cookie every once in a while. She’ll be friendly and more accessible when she is ready. I’m the same way. Bring the cookies.

    • Emmaleigh504

How does someone not know how to get along with women? Women aren’t aliens. And why is she admitting to such a short coming?
I agree with skj84, take her for coffee you’ll totally win her over, or at least cease being an exotic creature to her.

      • I know! I’ve never understood it either, but I hear it more often than you’d think.
I’ll try the coffee. Thanks, y’all!

        • Emmaleigh504

I hear it a lot too and think it’s makes the people who say it sound like asses. Just like C says, they want to insinuate they are one of the guys, but it’s not something to be proud of that you can’t talk to and get along with 50% of the population.

      • Sounds like she’s trying to insinuate herself as “one of the guys”.

        • …Which is a strategy some women try to employ in a male-dominated industry. I’ve never had it in me, myself, but I can see how it would make things easier.

          • skj84

yeah. While I definitely can hang with my male coworkers I would never through another woman under the bus to gain their respect. Women who hate other women are the worst.

          • I so so agree. I don’t understand how being “one of the guys” precludes someone from talking to other women (or woman, in my office). I don’t need to be friends with her but would at least like to have a professional relationship with her.
Luckily, I’ve been here long enough and my coworkers know me well enough that they know I’m not “scary.”

  • Rant: At work, and the boss is on his way in.
Rave: Indicated that, if nothing else is going on, I can leave soon after noon.
Rave: Possibly can jump on an earlier flight – I’ve got a 2 hour flight, 2.5 hour bus ride, and a 2.5 hour car ride with my non-talkative brother to look forward to!
Rant: First Christmas with my parents split up, and my mom’s using me as a therapist. She isn’t willing to actually go to a therapist, either. This will be fun…

  • Rant: Working today.
Rave: Near-certain likelihood of early dismissal.
Rant: Forgot to bring a can of cola to the office. Need caffeine.
Rave: My mom is visiting. She drives me up the wall sometimes, but I enjoy her company.
    Rant: She leaves tomorrow.
Rave: Unofficial PoPville Christmas Orphans Get-Together on Christmas Day. (See Pablo’s post, and RSVP to Pablo if you want to go, so we know how many seats to save.)

  • Rant: Leaky roof. After 2 basement floods in a week. I must appease Poseidon somehow.

Rave: I think I finally figured out a kitten-proof drip collection vessel.

  • Emmaleigh504

    Rant: researching equations.
Rant: the “helper” from the other library is super annoying and complains about everything. She also has a guy that follows her around like a puppy dog. She never comes over here without him. How very 2nd grade.
    Rave: bah humbug

  • Rave: Yesterday’s RRR. It was gold! Welcome Friday Girl.
Rant: Working in an overheated office
Rave: Wearing my popville t since I happened to have it with me.
Rave: Today is the start of my annual movie marathon, so many good ones to choose from! Early dismissal time will determine what I see today.

  • Rave: had a great night staying in and drinking wine with my roommates. It almost makes me sad about moving back to Woodley.
Rave: Woodley house is coming along beautifully.
Rant: two nights ago I agreed to a date tonight. Then he asked me about drinks last night and I told him I’m not committing to two dates before even meeting. He then told me “it’s not a date, just drinks”. I held firm and he was like ” OK see you Wednesday”. Now I just want to call the whole thing off. It’s pretty late though..

    • I don’t understand this. I had a date set with a guy and then a couple days before our date, he invited me to his house for a Christmas party with his roommates and friends. It’s so odd.
Hopefully if you do end up going, you’ll be pleasantly surprised! Some people just come off as strange via text/online interaction.

    • You could have easily backed out of date 2 if date 1 (just drinks) didn’t go well, so I really don’t see why this is a rant? A guy likes you enough to consider you when plans fell through (I’m assuming this happened or he would have probably offered to meet tonight initially). With all the problems women have posted here about men not showing interest, you’re mad that someone showed too much interest. LOL

  • rave: half day at work today!
bonus rave: my bf is taking me to my parents house tonight (my parents hate coming to get me from the metro) so I’m looking forward to that.
sad rant: I’m having a teary month. Maybe just shock from spending a few days in Orlando and then landing in DC amid cold and rain. My body wants to join in with the weather I guess.

also I hate going to Church (catholic) on Christmas.

  • Rave: Got my first bonus ever! Though after taxes and 401k it’s only 52% of its initial size.
Rant: Super bloated and I forgot to put on makeup today. At least few people are around to see me.

  • skj84

Rave: I’m off work and have a late bus home so I get to relax this morning. I slept in and I’m probably going to grab nice lunch before I go. I wonder if anywhere is serving brunch today?

Rave: I packed my PoPville T shirt! Hoping to get a good picture in front of the mountain by my house.

Not a rave nor rant, but yesterday’s shenanigans made me really think about what I post! I sometimes mention(and dog out) people I know in my posts. I know for a fact that 3 of my friends read PoPville regularly, though I don’t know if they post. May keep some personal details at a minimum.

  • Rant: At work today. Nothing really to do, but I couldn’t take time off. Boo
Rave: Four day weekend! Christmas tomorrow! Not spending it with family! Huzzah!
Rant: Will be a bit bored tonight. Is there any Christmas Eve events going on?
Rave: Heading to Philly tomorrow for a four day vacation. The fiancé and I are staying in a high end hotel, eating ourselves silly, and drinking all the booze.

  • Rave: Slept in the renovated house for the first time last night. Spent quality time breaking in the kitchen — playing with the awesome rang. Sunday and Tuesday. I suppose sooner or later it will start to feel like home.
Rant: Me moving out of Girlfriend’s at the same time she’s under brutal holiday and family pressure, sick and spending too much of her free time helping me move — and a couple of well-intentioned but very poorly chosen remarks led to a brutal fight that still has me gun shy, despite her utter and sincere regrets and apologies. Not to engage in stereotypes but when an Irish girl from the Bronx rolls out the big guns, it is freaking shock and awe. Irish eyes were not shining (what’s the line from the Cake song? “eyes that burn like cigarettes”)
Rave: Christmas is tomorrow; frantic preparations will be over, for better or for worse; and there really is nothing better than sitting down at the table with people you love. After a martini. Especially when someone else is handling dessert.

  • Blithe

Rave: Not one, but two music teachers have now told me that I need to take writing music more seriously. Sooo, I’m pondering the previously preposterous possibility of putting together the skill set that I’ll need to take writing music more seriously.
Rave: My Formerly Tightest jeans are now way too loose. I’ve a long way to go, but I’m glad that I’m growing in a good direction.
Rave: So many unexpected gifts this year!!! Both tangible and not.
Rave: On charette! Gingerbread house project is on!
Rave: Happy Holidays everybody! Hope everyone enjoys a safe, wonderful, magical relaxing holiday!

  • Emmaleigh504

Another rant: Why can’t I find semi stale Krispy Kremes in my grocery store??? I guess I’ll head to Dupont, but it just feels wrong to put fresh Krispy Kremes in bread pudding.
    Rave: bread pudding.

  • Rant: Rain. I’d prefer it snow at Christmas.
Rave: Possible half-day today? Still waiting for a decision to trickle down from the powers that be.
Rant/Rave: If I wrote a screenplay based on yesterday’s RRRR, think someone would buy it for a lot of money? Haha.

  • Oh man – I stopped checking in on RRR&R early yesterday and missed the drama! Thanks for the head’s up to check it out – awesome!
Got out of the house smoothly & easily this morning despite carrying 90% of the luggage for my family (my wife is on toddler duty), which means it was all packed easily and smoothly, including the last minute stuff to grab this morning. Yay! Now fingers crossed for the bits & pieces of travel to CT going smoothly….

  • Pablo Raw

Rave: Happiness is to not have a need to have a Christmas tree.

    • Blithe

I couldn’t go that far — so I have a very small, edible (?) rosemary tree in a pot. And an ornament that I was told is “a Gibson 175” that I hope won’t be too much for it. I like the symbolism of the rosemary. It’s cute, and it smells great. And when people tease me about not cooking a big dinner, I can threaten them with plans to invite them over and cook my tree.

  • Rant: this rain… i wish it were dry out as i have a couple of errands to run and would like to be able to do so on the bike while staying dry. plus it makes me want to turn today into a lazy day
Rave: days off due to holiday & spending them with family

  • Rant: Loud roommate and friends. I have no problem with occasionally have people over, but after 11pm on a weeknight when I can hear you over the tv and kitchen fan on high far down the hall is too much. Only a few more weeks of this mess!
    Rave: Settlement time is scheduled.
Rave: Hopefully getting on a very long-term project soon with substantive work!
Rant: Chase denied 1 fraudulent charge but allowed another. Two new cards in 2 years. Thank goodness I check my statement often.

  • Accountering

    Rave: Christmas!
Rant: One of my neighbors wives passed yesterday. I saw him this morning and he told me. Very sudden an unexpected. They were elderly, but he was very torn up about it. I really feel for him.
Rant2: Caps last night. Piss poor effort in the first two periods, only to come out on fire in the third period.
Rant3: To have the game taken out of our hands by the officials sucks. With 5:30 left in the game down 3-2, they called us for a 4-minute penalty for high-sticking, and then immediately 2 minutes for touching the puck with your hand in a faceoff (wtf?!?)

    • Emmaleigh504

Tis the season for old people to die 🙁 When I lived in old people land, FL the bulletin board for my condo complex would start filling up with notices of who died. And though my condo complex was mostly retirees, they were mostly young retires. It’s s depressing seasonal phenomenon.

  • Friday is a holiday! (Thank you Mr. President!)

FOUR hour early dismissal today! (Thank you Mr. Secretary!)

    Merry Christmas!

  • RANT: I have strep. F’ing strep. Pretty sure it is from one of my coworkers who came in sick last week because he didn’t want to use up the leave he needed for Christmas. Merry @#$#@$% Christmas. On top of feeling like crap, I am supposed to go visit my best friend and her kids on Friday. Doc said I should stop being contagious after 24 hours of antibiotics, but if I still feel bad, not sure I want to hop on two planes to TX. Just GRRRRRR

  • I Dont Get It

Rave: A large empty box and some empty shelves so fun uncle organized the little ones into creating a museum with items carefully curated from around the house.
Rave2: It’s hilarious too see what little kids think are museum worthy.
Rave3: Five year olds using the word “curate”.
Rant: Having to pick up my father’s wife at he Nashville airport on Christmas day eve.

  • Rant: I missed the Friday bagelness.
Question: are bagelboy and Corey the same person? I remember cautioning a Corey about over sharing… But I love the drama

  • I want to thank Popville commenters for their comments yesterday about dealing with my therapist. I’ll try to tell him my concerns and uncomfortable feelings. If he understands, great. If he doesn’t, I’ll move on to another therapist.
Rave: It’s Christmas Eve. Eyeing my wrapped gifts the same way I did when I was a kid.
    Rant: crappy Christmas Eve weather.
    Rave: Working from home today.
Rave: Got permission to stop working 2 hours early! thanks boss!

  • Emmaleigh504

“All You Had To Do Was Stay” has been in my head for dayz.

  • Rave: the winter cocktail of deliciousness that will greet my lips in a few short hours: 2 shots rye (I am using Redemption); 1 shot sweet vermouth (Dolin Rouge); 1/4 tsp of vanilla syrup (the kind used to flavor coffee); 1/2 tsp maple syrup.
    Rant: the rain.
Rant: such a minor rant, but uber is having some sort of GPS issue with my address.

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: now is the time time all the feds at my working place start to leave for their early dismissal. sigh. I wonder how much longer my fed supervisor will stay here. The last time there was early dismissal he stayed an hour passed his normal leaving time.
Rave: sleeping late tomorrow and friday.

  • Rant: I just dropped off my foster dog with her next foster. I’m finally out of snuggle buddies 🙁
Rant: I’m not sure my down parka is going to dry before I leave for New England in the morning. Miss Muddy Paws and I had a great time at the dog park yesterday, she finally stopped just following me around and instead ran and chased a stick, but she also jumped on me. I washed the coat last night, hung it up at about 1am, and it’s still pretty damp.
Rave: foster dog went to town at the dog park!
Rave: made some last minute Christmas gifts. Umm, did you know you can make cool stuff with Borax, food coloring, and pipe cleaners?
Rave: I’ll add my rave to the Friday Girl/BagelBoy excitement. Hilarious stuff.

  • Rave: Bagel and Friday drama – can it really be true?
    Rant: Christmas cold…blah
Rave: test drove Christmas Day cocktails for family happy hour – um…YUMMY. We may all get drunk before dinner.

“Maybe someone would find it, he said. And maybe, somehow, that person would find them. “Not everyone in the world is a criminal,” he told her.”
“They called pawn shops and hoped a thief might have already sold it.”
If she lost it, is the finder isn’t a thief. good grief.

    • Thanks for posting, anonanon! That warmed even my jaded, cold heart. 🙂
