Check Out the Huge OKI Ramen & Sake Sign – Now Open on M Street in former Sala Thai space

1817 M Street, NW

Back in September we learned that Oki Ramen was going to replace Sala Thai’s small lower level space on M Street just off Connecticut Ave. It’s tough to be noticed in a lower level spot so it looks like Oki Ramen is taking the opposite tact of Denson Liquor Bar – Check out their huge sign. It’s taking a bit longer than a “few weeks” to open but should be soon. Stay tuned.

Update from a reader:

“Oki is open now its been open for a couple of weeks now. It’s a good place the downstairs looks great, i like the vibe.”

Looks like it was in a shootout!

  • Go big or go home I guess, don’t know how I feel about a ramen place. Haven’t really eaten that since college but I do love me some good sake.

    • This isn’t 10c/bag college ramen. The only thing they have in common is that they both contain noodles and liquid. See Toki, Daikaya, Sakuramen, Ren’s.

I can’t speak for this place in particular, but college ramen and actual ramen are 2 vastly different things.

    • Fun trick: you can bridge the gap between “college ramen” and “Japanese street food” by mixing in real ingredients. Make the sauce with some miso, add real veggies, and meat. Perhaps an egg? Makes all the difference in the world and still relatively cheap.

That’s kind of like saying you don’t know how you feel about a pizza place because you at Dominoes in college…

      • Domino’s is a little too close for this analogy. It’s more like 10c college ramen is to good ramen as frozen microwaved pizza is to good pizza.

  • can’t wait to try this place out…big ramen fan!

  • I’m so curious about this place. I wonder if they’re going to have Okinawan noodles… mmm.

    • Ooh, I’ve never had those…

One of my friends went there already (I guess a soft opening, or test or something?) and said the ramen was pretty good. We’ll see!

      • Hmm, I just checked out their online menu and I’m skeptical. They have TomYum ramen which does not bode well for the ramen (fusion just never excites me haha).
BUT it does look like they have gyuudon so I’d go just to try that since Donburi doesn’t have it on their menu!

  • It’s actually already open, I went last week! They just haven’t taken the Sala Thai sign down yet, but the inside is renovated/redecorated. The ramen was pretty good (not amazing, but it will definitely satisfy my workday lunch ramen cravings). Seems like they’re still working out some service issues, but that’s to be expected.

  • I work right around the corner. There’s already a plethora of lunch options in the area, but no ramen, so I’m excited to try it!
