From the Forum – Peeper in Mt. Pleasant

Peeper in Columbia Heights/Mt. Pleasant:

“Hey y’all – anyone ever had a problem with this before? I live on Park road (the “Parkade” across the street from the church on 16th) on the first floor. There’s a road behind my apartment complex for the townhouses and complexes nextdoor. On Saturday night, my fiancee was asleep while I was reading, and I noticed some movement on my window sill – a short, young, Latino man climbed up to look into our window! I immediately got up and would’ve taken a picture of him, but thought it must’ve been a raccoon or cat., as my vision was obscured by our curtains. So, I just banged on the window and yelled for him to leave. He immediately left and took off. For some detail, we’re about three or four feet off the ground, so the guy really must’ve wanted to see something. Obviously we have bars, but it’s still pretty freaky.

Anyone dealt with peepers before? Is it worth doing anything besides reporting it to the building management/my landlord? Is this something to be worried about becoming worse? We have several families with young children on the floor, so I wasn’t sure how else to handle it. Let me know if you guys have seen anything lately!”

  • Ugh, I’m sorry. I know exactly what you’re talking about. I used to live right next door in 1519 and had the exact same problem. There’s a shared alley way and my roommate and I would frequently hear someone in the alley enjoying some alone time late at night… Each time we told the landlord or called the police, but they showed up well after he was finished. It’s definitely worth having on record.

I’d also note that sometimes we’d think we heard the neighbor’s kid trying to sneak back into their home, but all of the windows have bars. There were always people hanging out around the area. Just keep your drapes closed and your windows locked. If I remember correctly, I think there were some reports of snatchings from window sills in the area, too.

Ahh, yeah, w’re right there at 1457 – and man, it just seems like that back area is one long stretch of darkness and creepiness. The fact that there are just street level doors lining it doesn’t seem like the best idea. Your experience sounds way creepy though, much creepier than ours! We just had a guy climb – he definitely didn’t seem to be doing anything else.

  • Definitely worth reporting to your landlord and the police. Peeping and other lower-level sexual offenses can be ways of testing the water before the guy actually decides to commit a rape. So letting them know that this guy is a problem sooner rather than later can potentially save someone a lot of pain. At the very least, they will know to look out for him if he tries this again.

  • A Georgetown rabbi was just arrested for this, but he was using cameras!

  • Interestingly, my last 2 apartments have been basement level and both places had/have street level windows (including in the bathroom in my previous place), but I never had any peepers! I feel lucky and also grateful that obviously the majority of people around are just decent and have never taken advantage of what would be a really easy situation to invade. At the previous place my windows were so RIGHT ON THE STREET that I could see folks’ feet as they walked by. Never a problem. It took me a while to get used to it — for sure — for the first few weeks I was constantly checking my windows and making sure the curtains were not parted even a ahalf-inch. But eventually my paranoia eased up and I’m now in my 3rd full year of being windows-at-street-level and never had a problem.

    • Yeah never had any problems…that you know of.

      • Gee, Nonna. You almost sound bitter that I’m safe in my home and no harm has come to me despite my low-level windows.

To be honest, that was the first thing that went through my mind too, like “what if he’s seen us a lot before, and just came back!” We would occasionally have the curtains open a little more than usual, and this guy could’ve been doing it the whole time we were there. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda, immediately went into a nervous tick. Did no good! But, that type of thinking will just drive ya crazy, and Nonna is probably just trying to mess with you.

  • I reported mine to the police (he wasn’t just looking in my window; I looked up to see he had his pants down and was masturbating with his dick pressed against the glass) and got a complete lack of interest or concern. Still, better to call in and establish the pattern in case there’s escalation later, I guess.

  • I would call the police, what if this guy is creeping around looking in peoples’ windows on the block? No one will know unless you call and document the activity. I would definitely tell your landlord as well, again it could be that multiple people are experiencing this but if no one says anything no one can do anything about it. How creepy and weird, I would be pretty disturbed. Sorry this happened.

  • I’d install motion detection lights and a good camera then I’d put those needles on the ledge and around the windows so when he perches he’d get it in the keyster, and of course have the cops on speed dial.

Thanks for the comments guys! I knew I could get some good answers from the folks here. Yeah, I just called to file a report and they said to call again when I return home to meet with an officer tonight to document the incident. Also, let me building management know just so they have an idea. It’s great that nothing happened this time, but who knows if it will get any worse. Still getting used to living on the first floor I suppose, and that alley is just a little too dark for comfort at times!
