I love it! That light in the living room is to die for!

  • The furnishings (or staging furniture?) are a bit distracting.

    • I was thinking the same thing. Are there people out there who find this style really attractive? Perhaps the sort who could pay $1.7 million for a house? Or is it just real estate agent staging stock? FWIW, the weathered-looking exterior paint is actually my favorite part.

I like the furniture, we exist.

        • Yeah, but for someone trying to sell a place, it makes more sense to stage it with relatively neutral decor, so that they can more easily imagine themselves and their furniture there.

To me it’s more neutral and bland than some of the other furnished places we’ve seen. I barely even remember specific furniture, just that it was pleasant. But I guess people get distracted by different things.

  • That’s a lot of dough for a house that badly needs a paint job.

    • That’s not a house in need of a paint job, that’s a house with a very specific sort of ‘distressed’ finish. It’s allowed to weather so it looks like that–it does *not* need any paint.

  • I normally love that white washed brick exterior, but not a fan on this house. Think it’s more suited for a rowhouse.

    • Where is JustinBC this week? IIRC, he’s into that look on brick.

    • Also…hate when they have the stone (be it marble or granite or whatever) going down the sides of the island. It only works in a few select, very modern open interiors, and usually just ends up screaming, “hey, look how much fancy expensive stone I can afford!”

  • Sounds like a good deal. Didn’t see square footage anywhere, but a 5 bed/5 bath less than 1 mile from metro in an incredible neighborhood for $1.7? Wow.

That’s what I thought, too. For its size, condition, amenities (garage parking!), and location, I would have expected it to be priced higher. I like it!

    • I haven’t looked at the pix or listing yet, but something must be wrong – that is way too cheap for that many BR/BA in that neighborhood.

Well, part of it is they’re calling a finished attic a bedroon, and the see-through bathroom won’t work for everyone. Also, being *on* 34th st depresses prices because it’s so busy. But still … something’s wrong with the place or maybe the seller’s circumstance.

  • I really like some aspects of the design and hate others.

The location is really hard. It’s directly across from the Belgian embassy, and near the Norwegian and Vatican embassies too.. So, it doesn’t really feel like it is part of a neighborhood. Houses on that stretch of 34th Street have had a hard time selling.

  • Pretty good deal for this location and high end finishes, plus a real detached garage, nice private outdoor space, and an income unit. Massive master suite at the top of the house!

  • I’ll take it! Only need to raise another 1.3 million…sigh.

love everything about it, especially the decor.

This is one of my favorite HP posts ever. I actually agree with both textdoc and Emilie’s POVs on this one. I think the furniture definitely limits the appeal to some buyers, but personally I think it rocks. This is the kind of style that you have to commit to in an all or nothing fashion, and they’ve done a great job of keeping it harmonious. There are so many <3s for me about this place, particularly the waterfall island, the dark wood floors, the lighting throughout, and the whitewashed exterior although it's not one of the better representations I've seen. If I were in the market again this place would absolutely be on my radar and I would probably negotiate to have the furnishings purchased too since I'm sure it's just staging materials.
