  • So, for anyone out there, I have a question:
I’ve been seeing quite a few large banana plants in DC the past couple of years. Do these plants survive the winter here, or is what I’m seeing just a new plant that is planted every year?

    • The foliage will die back but the root should be OK. I think some gardeners dig up the root and store it indoors over the winter, but they should be be able to survive winter here if they’re protected by mounding leaves around the roots to insulate them. The season is too short for them to produce any fruits, though.

  • That’s not a massive banana plant — the house is just happy to see you.
