“An old gold/beige car with New Mexico plates blew through a stop sign and nailed a biker” Sunday 3pm in Shaw

“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to let you know about a hit and run that happened around 3pm on Sunday outside of Satellite Room at the corner of Vermont and 9th.

An old gold/beige car with New Mexico plates blew through a stop sign and nailed a biker. Both the bike and the biker flipped over the hood of the car. The biker got up- shook himself off and moved to the curb. The driver rolled down her window– looked at him and then drove away. By the time I tried to get the license plate she was too far up 9th street.

I went over to the biker and he seemed to be ok- didn’t want me to call 911 but clearly visibly shaken. He wheeled his bike away shortly thereafter.

Im appalled by the way the driver handled this. For such a biking friendly city— I cannot tell you the number of times I have almost been hit by drivers not paying attention– and to then run……just despicable.”

  • It was probably Maryland plates. They have a license plate that looks like New Mexico plates, but makes me sense geographically.

  • This is a very bike friendly city – if you get rid of the drivers.

  • Did the cyclist also have a stop sign? And if so, did the cyclist stop?

  • There is a mid-eighties beige Chevy Celebrity with New Mexico related bumper stickers (not sure about the license plate) that parks on Warder St near Rock Creek Church Road.

  • What a sociopath. You’d think they would at least try to make sure that the person they HIT WITH THEIR CAR was OK. Some people really are horrible.

  • A customer at Bicycle Space on Friday said a DC city vehicle doored him took off and the people in it left the car a few blocks away.

  • I did not see this incident, so I don’t know what happened. But I live near 11th and U NW and the bikes just sail through the 4-way stop here. Hey do so when cars on T street have arrived at the intersection first and stopped, and therefore have the right-of-way.
Anyone one who doesn’t think this is happening should come by to take a look any day of the week during rush hour. Some of the bike riders don’t even look for other traffic.

I walk to work in the neighborhood, and I think biking is a great option. And I think we have to have a realistic dialogue about whether bike riders should have to stop when there is no opposing traffic. But blowing through when the driver who got there before you has stopped is dangerous and wrong. He’ll, they won’t even stop for a pedestrian.

I think it would be useful to have a sensible discussion about this topic. But let’s stop the fantasy that bike riders don’t flaunt the rules of the road to a significant degree. And let’s have a sensible discussion about it.

  • The biker or any onlookers should always call 911… I can’t believe that a biker would flip over the hood of a car, be fine, and then nobody would call 911….

Never trust out of state drivers. They’re almost as bad as taxis.
