Not Looking Good for Taqueria Habanero Coming to 14th Street near Red Derby

3710 14th St, NW

Back in March it looked like there was some progress at Taqueria Habanero coming to 14th and Quincy St, NW near Red Derby and Lyman’s. Sadly, the coming soon/viene pronto sign has been removed and it doesn’t look like much work was completed if any. I had high hopes for this spot so hopefully I’m wrong.

  • On one hand, I don’t understand why development in this area has been so painfully slow. On the other hand, once real development happens, that’ll be the end of cheap beer at the Derby.

    • IMHO, the development in this area is slow because DC’s growth and development is skewing eastward. That’s why there’s been an explosion of development in Shaw, NoMA, H Street, all in a relatively short time frame. The strip around Red Derby looks pretty much the same as it did when I lived in that neighborhood back in 2006-08. I don’t see that changing in the near future.

      • The difference is that when you were living in the hood around 06-08, there weren’t funeral homes being converted into multi-unit condos. And rents continue to increase in the high-rises surrounding Red Derby. Just because fast food places aren’t springing up as fast as you’d like doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

  • As far as I know, the problem is that they did some renovations without permit and the city make them to get permit and use a licensed contractor. There was some marking in the lot in from where the CK hotel was so maybe this condo building will start contruction soon.

  • Maybe this is where Bangkok Golden is moving to?
People forget how close to Petworth this strip is… Not only is Red Derby a HUGE draw, but this location is only three blocks from the Petworth Metro. It’s also only three blocks from all the new condos getting ready to deliver above the new Safeway. In fact, the 218 condos developed above the Safeway were just sold to Principal Real Estate for $75 MILLION. There are also two new planned condos within a block of Red Derby.
This place is a gold mine with cheaper rent than Shaw and H Street. Limitless potential and available retail space.

  • Next Step: Get rid of the “Quick Cash” business. I wish DC could prohibit these types if businesses who prey on desperate people who are less fortunate or in dire straights.

  • Unlike Lyman’s the Red derby owners own the building. The cheap beers will always be available.

  • What’s up with the defunct “Rib Pit” one block north on 14th St.? Not right next to Red Derby but it has a lot of space and maybe some serious potential. Wood fired oven pizzeria/brewpub?

  • This is what you get when you try to step to Taqueria Distrito Federal. Recognize, patna.
