You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

Rant: The photo of the guy that keeps showing up here for the advertisement “View Anyone’s Criminal History Online.” WTF???

  • Rant: back to work after 2 week vacation. Ughhh
    Rave: beautiful weather
Rant: came home to no power and Pepco trucks everywhere. Better not happen during the World Cup!
Rave: 8 days till the World Cup! Sorry boss, I’m busy everyday at noon, 3pm, and 6pm!!

  • Rant: This morning, the 395 entrance on 9th st NW had its left lane closed on the other side of the intersection with Constitution, without any warning up the street. Basically in the middle of the intersection you had to merge with the lane on the right to avoid driving straight into the barricades.
Rave: pick-your-own strawberries. We’re going back this weekend, because we’ve eaten too many this week to make big enough batches to freeze for the winter.

  • Rave: it’s gold leather skirt day.
Rant: my cut and color last night took 2.5 hours. I thought I was going to be able to get some things done, but pretty much my whole night was spent in the salon chair.
General Question: I have a 1950’s-ish steel Vornado fan, like the kind you can just stick your finger in and get it chopped off. The motor makes noises that vary throughout its use and I’d like to get it checked out, but I’m not even sure what type of place I would bring it to. Do any PoPvillers have recommendations?

  • epric002

    rave: bissel steam mop. AMAZING.
rave: the DC riversmart (rain barrel) program. so excited!
rant: how do you tell a close family member you think they have adult ADD?

    • Did you use the steam mop on wood floors? Is this a regular thing or a special deep cleaning thing?
I don’t really know how to break the potential ADD news to someone, but there are some online screening tests for adults that I’ve seen referenced by an advice person (maybe Dear Abby, I can’t remember??) that are somewhat decent pre-screeners to use before contacting one’s doctor.

      • justinbc

I’ve got one of the Shark steam mops and use it on our wood floors, works wonderfully.

      • epric002

i haven’t yet, but if your floors are sealed you can. i used it on the kitchen last night and was AMAZED. tonight will be bathroom floor and more serious grout cleaning. i will use it instead of mopping. yeah, i’ve googled symptoms of adult ADD and it seems like a very likely contender and would explain my frustration with certain behaviors.

    • I would skip the medical diagnosis unless it’s already been established by a medical professional before. Tell them the ways in which it *appears to you* that they’re having problems and ask/encourage them to consider a doctor visit. Maybe if you really are close you can get away with telling them what you think they have, but a more supportive approach might go over better.

  • Rant: Soul-draining contract work. I spent the past 5-6 years working for the same company, and I’m just now coming to terms with the need for a change.
Rant: I’m having difficulty updating my resume due to my glib outlook on the company and what it does. I know I’ve developed a lot of valuable experience in the past 5 years, but it’s hard seeing it as such at this moment. Any advice on how to get around this?
Rave: Working from home with a gorgeous view!

    • Your resume sells you, not the company you worked for. Keep that in mind and it may be easier to find the things you should highlight.

    • Ask a neutral friend to help you with resume language. Encourage you to lose the subjective tone or adjectives – just get to the facts of what YOU DO. not the company. Your next employer doesn’t have to know you think you work for a lousy place. Boost yourself up!

    • You and I have the same rants. I’m totally in the same place and have the same issues with resume writers block/lack of motivation. If you find something that ends up working for you, please share.

  • Rant: I slept like a rock last night, but I’m still loopy from lack of sleep the previous evening. I just used the wrong name when discussing my friend’s fiance in a text message. Oy. I need to get it together. I seem to be fraying a bit at the seams this week.
Rave: I have a king sized bed all to myself tonight. This is going to be an order take out, put on pjs, watch bad tv, and pass out before ten o’clock kind of evening.
Rave: At least I’m having a good hair day.

  • pablo .raw

    Rant: no free time
Rave: lots of work, everybody is getting married!
Rant: skills I don’t have as a wedding photographer: How to tie a groom’s bow tie in the last minute

    • skj84

Youtube! All sorts of tutorials on how to tie a bow tie. Though I think there should be somebody on hand to tie the grooms tie. None of the groomsmen knew how?

  • Rant: The census form I had to fill out online. I thought it was going to be a simple few questions, but they wanted to know everything about where I live, how much I make, where I work, how much I pay in utilities, etc. Total waste of time!

    • Quotia Zelda

Rant: The Census Bureau never asks me to fill out the American Community Survey.

However: Historians of the future will grateful you filled it out.

    • As someone whose work has relied on ACS data in the past, please fill it out! It’s vital in helping judge economic growth/shifts and under/overcharging in certain areas. In many cases, it’s how communities get funding under federal and State/local programs, and can be how city/federal services are placed (based on need in location). It will help your community in the near future to have the most accurate data possible.

    • special_k

I was so excited to get the American Community Survey last year. I mean, so excited. But I’m a sociologist.

  • Rant: The new traffic pattern / lights in Washington Circle are miserable.

  • Rave: Playing hooky and going to Kings Dominion tomorrow! Haven’t been since highschool.

    • Additional Rave: pancakes.

    • I’ve been planning to go this summer and was looking into tickets not long ago.
Living Social has coupon for Kings Dominion. 2 single-day admissions for $64 (although I just checked the Kings Dominion website and their special price is $41 (plus fees, which might add up to $64).

  • Rant: Pup is at the vet’s getting fluids and blood tests after bouts of vomiting.

Rave (?): Trader Joe’s while I’m waiting, found the mini tacos Dan raved about.

    • And question – any recommendations for carpet cleaning? Small/old Turkmen and Afghan rugs

      • I had great luck with Art Connection Oriental Rugs. They’re at 701 W Broad St #101, Falls Church, VA 22046. The owner is basically a rug historian and they do good work.

      • saf

I’ve done well with these folks – they used to be on Columbia Road.

      • Thanks for the recommendations – once I know pup is over her vomiting I’ll get the rugs cleaned.
Is it just my dog that prefers to throw up (and when she had diarrhea, poop) on rugs? Plenty of easy to clean wood floors nearby…

        • saf

No, they do it on purpose – although in my case, it’s the cats.

          • At least she could throw up/poop on my (washable) bathroom rug)!
It has only happened 2-3 other times in the 4 years I’ve had her, and she more than makes up for the need to get rugs cleaned with her never-ending cuteness πŸ™‚

        • justinbc

I had one that I actually trained to jump into the bathtub when she had to vomit, made it super easy to clean up. This was offset by her doggy partner, who insisted on always doing it underneath the bed (in a bedroom that was carpeted). That was a MFer to clean up.

    • special_k

Wishing your pup a speedy recovery!

  • skj84

Rave: Found out I don’t have to go to daytime rehearsal today. More time to get work done at home!

Rant: I have a lot of cleaning and work I need to catch up on. Especially phone calls.

Rave: Grabbing a coffee and going to sit down and create a checklist. Best way for me to focus on what I need to do and not get overwhelmed.

Rave: Mockingbird Hill offers daytime coffee service! I’m hoping to check out there pour overs soon.

  • Rave: I gave my boss 30 days notice yesterday. I’ll be leaving my job to go and sell real estate full time. I’ve been doing it part time for years and my team leader has been asking for months for me to come on full time. I’m so excited and nervous all at the same time!!!
Rave: Supportive friends and family…I know there is risk involved in this decision but it’s wonderful to have the support.
Rave/rant (in that order): My fingers smell like garlic this morning.
Rave: Real estate closing tomorrow…I’m jumping right in!
Rave: I found out this morning that I was selected to perform at the Speakeasy DC event on July 8th for one of my dating related stories!
    Absolutely zero rants today

    • (except the one about garlic fingers I guess…it’s clearly not bringing me down too much, but I have been doing the Mary Catherine Gallagher occasionally)

    • Congrats on all the awesome stuff, that all sounds exciting! I love Speakeasy, I just might have to go to this show.

    • Congrats on the career move, and being chosen for Speakeasy! I performed in one of the student showcases and it was lots of fun. July PoPville event at Speakeasy?

    • Congrats on job news! And yay for Speakeasy DC, I love going to their shows. I’ll try and make it to yours!

    • Congrats! My secret dream is to be a realtor-but I’m terrified to leave my stable gvt job (which, admittedly, I really enjoy). I’d love to hear how you got started and decided to ultimately take the plunge. Again, congratulations and good luck!!!

      • justinbc

Many larger real estate companies will pay for your exam fees, but then you’ve got to work for them (lengths vary) and give up a huge amount of your commission.

    • skj84

Congrats Andie!!! Good luck with your new position and Speakeasy show. I’m out of town that day, but will send leg breaking vibes your way.

    • That is a great rave list! Congrats.

    • Woo, congrats and good luck!

    • Congrats on both counts Andie! I’m sorry I’ll be out of town during the speakeasy event, sounds like it’ll be a riot.

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: UPS f*cks up again. I guess I have to stop shopping at places that deliver with UPS.

    • What places don’t use UPS? I think your shipping options are going to be pretty limited unfortunately.

      • Lots of places use FedEx, USPS, or DHL.

      • Emmaleigh504

Lots of places use FedEx or USPS. I rarely have to use UPS and lately they have just not delivered to me. Last night the “delivered” it at 10:14 pm, but did not knock on my door or leave it outside my front door like the delivery notice said. I bet they left it outside the building front door and it got stolen because UPS is incompetent. And naturally, the stuff in the package was sale stuff so probably not in stock any more.

      • Some places only do UPS, others only do FedEx. Whether you like their shipping or not depends entirely on the driver assigned to your route. Our UPS driver is AMAZING and always goes the extra mile, while our FedEx driver sometimes doesn’t even bother to ring the doorbell when we’re home waiting for packages. As a result, we’re the opposite – far preferring places that ship UPS.
Can you get something delivered to work?

        • justinbc

Yeah our guy is really good. He’s even left his mobile # on the slip in case I got home shortly after he missed me. I haven’t gotten a package from FedEx since moving to DC, I wonder who uses them? Lasership has been terrible for me, but I never know they’re going to be the provider until USPS or UPS alerts me they’ve turned the package over to them for delivery.

          • Lasership is the Uberx of delivery. It’s just people in cars. You never know what you are going to get.

        • Emmaleigh504

I used to have a good UPS driver, but the current one blows. I have an AWESOME mail carrier (yes all caps is required b/c he is so great!), and FedEx has always been good. It’s just really frustrating because this is the second time in a row UPS has screwed up.
No I can’t get deliveries at work, but my building manager will accept and sign for packages during the day, unless the UPS person decides they don’t want to do that (that happened last time).
I’m really frustrated b/c the package was some awesome summer hats that were on sale. I’ve been so looking forward to wearing them!

    • I don’t know if this would help you, but 1-year UPS My Choice Premier memberships are often available for free with promo codes. You should be able to find one by googling. Some of their services includes rerouting and rescheduling packages, delivery to a UPS store and 2-hour delivery windows. I have it but I haven’t actually used any of those features so I’m not sure how well they work. It might be worth a shot.

      • epric002

i paid for the premium and am pretty disappointed in it. i got it almost exclusively in order to request specific 2 hour deliver windows….which aren’t available after 5:00 or on weekends, even though UPS regularly delivers during those time frames.

      • Emmaleigh504

        That’s an idea, thanks.

    • How do you know which shipping option they use? I’ve had Amazon send me things via USPS, UPS, FedEx, LaserShip (they SUCK)…

      • Emmaleigh504

The store said how they would deliver orders.

      • Oh yeah, Lasership is by far the worst. It seems like every time I get a package from them (*if* i get a package) it’s been violently mangled. It always leaves me thinking “you had ONE job. ONE JOB!”

  • Revel: Overheard on 14th Street: β€œI am exhausted, went to Candlelight Yoga and the Power Yoga Instructor taught the class”
Rant: Went to the dentist for a cleaning and left with a temporary crown!

  • I’ll be posting this for the next day or two, but we’re holding a PoPville dinner at the Rose’s Luxury private rooftop. Come join us! We have 4 interested so far and need 4-6 more!
    Info: http://rosesluxury.com/private_events/
    Sign up: goo.gl/CcR2J6

    • FYI, if you’re thinking of signing up, the dates that seem to work for everyone right now (5 so far!) are June 25 and June 27.

  • Quotia Zelda

Rant: The new skirt I’m wearing is cute, but I’ve decided it’s about 2 inches too short. I’ll be tugging it down all day.

Rave: Nothing truly rave-worthy, but if a too-short skirt is my only rant, I guess that’s a rave.

  • Rave – Loving the long days and warm but not too hot weather. I’ve been spending most of my free time after work going for walks, reading in various parks, or just sitting by the river at Georgetown Waterfront instead of watching TV in my living room.
Rant – I’m not getting any housework done. Nope to laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping, cooking a real dinner, and finally packing away the winter coats and shoes. It’s too nice outside. I can always do that stuff later.
Rave – As a result of laundry procrastination, I’ve had to get creative with clothes I don’t normally wear and discovered some great new outfits.

  • Becks

Rave: Strawberry picking this weekend and Blueberry picking next weekend!
Rant: My back is sore and I have tossed and turned the last two nights.

    • Emmaleigh504

If you like fruit butters, I highly recommend making blueberry butter! I got the recipe from FoodInars.com but I added a splash of almond extract before putting it in jars. I also don’t have a slow cooker so did it on the stove. Super duper easy and so so so tasty!

  • Rave: Coming home from vacation to an amazing partner and house full of cuddly animals. There is nothing better than a pup so excited to see you that she turns into one big, massive wiggle. I missed all of their faces.

Rant: A self-destructive friend. I love her dearly, but I’m completed exhausted. It feels like constant work to walk the line between giving validation and support (which I know she needs), and the critical push (which she also probably needs) to get her borderline alcoholic life back on track. I have no idea what to do.

    • Extra rant: Had a package of ceramic pots (for plants) delivered to our house yesterday and in the hour or two it was on the porch, someone tore open the package, stole two, and managed to break one of the ones that they didn’t steal. People stink.

  • Rant πŸ™ I saw a dog struck by a car on the Rock Creek Parkway around 11am this morning. It happened on the southbound side near the ramp from Waterside Drive.

The dog went under a van and ran away limping toward the creek. It looked to be a mix breed, weigh about 50-60 lbs, yellowish brown in color, with a red collar.

A NPS employee in a truck ahead of the car that struck the dog stopped and got out but I was not able to safely stop. I hope the owner can find it.

    • epric002

can you post this on the lost and found dogs dc metro facebook page? seeing those kinds of things happen are just the worst πŸ™ i hope they find the poor dog.

  • Rant: Bundling of internet, phone, and cable services. Is there such a thing as a standalone internet service provider anymore? Or does one always have to go through a cable company or phone company? It’s getting to the point where Comcast is making it prohibitively expensive not to combine phone, internet, and cable – or at least making it stupid from an economic standpoint.

    • I have Clear Wireless and it gets the job done. Not lightening fast internet but I can stream Netflix. $99 for the little wi-fi box, $54 a month for internet. Plus no contract, which is really nice.

    • It’s still a cable company, but I go through RCN and get just internet service, no cable or phone. No equipment charges, just $35/month.

    • Was there ever such a thing as standalone internet service provider? I mean one that provides a high-speed connection? Even the old dial-up companies still required you to have a landline, so you were going through a phone company anyway. Except for Clear and similar wireless solutions (which are not super-fast, nor were they ever “a thing” before now), you basically have always had to deal with a cable/phone company. Or am I forgetting so quickly?

    • saf

We have fios – internet and phone only. And the phone is metered, as we don’t really use it. Under $50 a month.

    • That annoys me too. We have cable TV that someone watches for maybe 30 minutes a year. But we need phone and internet so the bundle ends up being the cheapest option. Would love suggestions on how to circumvent that.

  • Accountering

Rave: Awesome dinner last night. Not quite enough leftovers for lunch, but my turkey sandwich was pretty solid too.
Rave2: Got 19 (3 six packs and a bonus pair) new pairs of socks from NiceLaundry.com. Ranging from pretty wild, to work appropriate. Strangely excited for a brand new sock drawer
Rant/Rave: My boss who brought me the package first thought I was having my laundry shipped out to be cleaned and delivered to the office, and then asked if I was buying used socks. No to both of the above, but pretty funny.
Rave3: No actual rants whatsoever. Life is good! Excited about getting back in the gym tonight after the long weekend in Miami.

  • Revel: Dinner at Le Diplomate last night with a dear friend. Steak frites. Bottle of rose. My happy place.
Revel: With one roommate moving out and another moving in, I hired Ericka Manzilla to clean my apartment top to bottom and I am so thrilled with the result!! My place feels like new. You can call 571-344-9181 to hire her services or email [email protected]. She’ll give a price quote over the phone given the size of the job – I felt the price was super reasonable. Recommend x 10000 you guys.

    • Accountering

Still haven’t been, but definitely want too! I keep making reservations a month in advance for good times on Saturday nights, but then have to lose the reservation when I can’t make it for whatever reason. Anyone interested in a 8:30pm reservation on Saturday? Normally I just drop them, and they get scooped up in a minute or less.

  • special_k

    Rave: Beautiful day!
Rave: My committee approved my interaction models. Could the end actually be near while my sanity is still intact?!
Rave: My sweet, sweet tabby is recovering well from major dental surgery and several tooth extractions. My Bombay ninja, however, does not like the smell of vet on his brother; lots of hissing and distance keeping.
Rant: Dental surgery was $$$$ and I really feel for people who are faced with significant healthcare costs for their pets and have difficult decisions to make. I’m glad places like WARL and the MD SPCA offer discounted medical services for folks, but not sure if they also offer specialty services like dental care, cancer treatment, etc., which people really need.

    • I wonder that too. My dog’s eye surgery was $2000 and of course pet insurance never pays for stuff like that.

      • epric002

my ASPCA pet health insurance covered 1/3 of my dog’s $3600 dental surgery bill. i’m very happy with the coverage i have with them.

    • anonymouse_dianne

RE: specialized treatment – yes to WARL. They can often get vets to volunteer for particularly unusual or tricky surgeries. I paid around $1500 for my cat’s dental surgery, quite a few years ago.

  • Rave: NakedWines.com. I’m trying new stuff, branching out beyond the empires of Mondavi and Jadot, finding some really excellent independent makers. And it’s inexpensive and efficient. A highly recommended service! (Although I will admit that the mental trigger to post about it was all the delivery headaches upthread, and my thought that I’m lucky to have good delivery and little theft in my neighborhood. Although the wine requires a signature, so not subject to theft… anyway… Wine!)

  • Rant: been very tired lately, sleeping a lot more…
Rave: dinner with the family tonight
Rave: have to come up with two or three new cocktails this week.

      • Accountering

Thanks for the recommendation! Looks like a great book, and at a minimum a terrific coffee table book. I grabbed it (and some other stuff of course) and its coming Friday.

        • justinbc

It’s got a lot of great historical info about each of the drinks they feature recipes for. If nothing else it will provide interesting tidbits to share at parties/bars.

      • Thank you. I tend to not read the books I have, so I will hold off for a little. I’m more of a “hmm, this tastes like it would go with…” The other night, I made a fernet and aperol cocktail that was great. Last night featured Pimm’s, Aperol, and gin with a dash of Peychaud’s. I’ve been steeping some cinnamon in some rye… I tend to do this a lot. I can’t recommend it enough. One or two sticks of cinnamon, half a bottle of Redemption, a jar, and a week of waiting…

  • Rant: on my way out this morning my girlfriend said I looked like I was going clubbing! None of the clothes I had on were things I’d wear outside of the office, so I chalked it up to her being super-conservative, but now I’m worried I’m somehow inappropriately dressed.

    • skj84

What were you wearing? What constitutes as club wear in her mind. I’m intrigued.

      • Black trouser-style pants, black suede pumps with a moderate heel, and a button-down tie-front blouse (admittedly sleeveless). The blouse is made of a silky material that has a slight shine to it, so I guess that makes it look clubby.

        • Emmaleigh504

That’s a little dressy for my casual workplace, but seems completely work appropriate and not clubby.

          • I never know what to wear at my workplace since it’s mostly men and most people are at least 20 years older than me. All I know is that jeans are never acceptable.

          • That does seem office appropriate to me for a woman, but it sure would be nice if men could wear such minimal outfits to work.

        • justinbc

Definitely doesn’t sound clubby, guess it really all depends on what the shirt looks like in person?

        • skj84

Oh that outfit sounds so cute! And not clubby to me. I see a lot of women wearing outfits like you described to the office.

        • Sleeveless would be a no-go in many places (including my office).

          • Yeah — I’ve seen it at my office, but I’m always surprised when I do.

          • Yeah, sleeveless is a grey area for me, and generally something I avoid. But this top looks odd with every jacket and cardigan I own, and great by itself. So I occasionally make the exception for it. I’ve seen a few well-respected women at my office wearing sleeveless so I think it’s ok. But when it’s one woman for every 50 or so men it’s hard to know what’s appopriate for us.

        • Not clubby. At all. Your girlfriend’s opinion seems a bit skewed/extreme.
Walk around K Street during lunch hour. You’ll seem some jaw-dropping outfits here on young ladies coming out of office buildings. Like straight-up Kelly Buddy-style tight short dresses with tons of cleavage. Pretty nuts.

          • Just because some people dress inappropriately at work doesn’t make it OK for others to do so.
The OP’s outfit didn’t sound particularly “clubby” to me, but depending on her workplace, something sleeveless might not be appropriate.

          • Well, she wears suits to work, and basically the same outfit without the suit jacket when she’s doing anything else except exercising. Neither of us work downtown though so we’re a bit oblivious to the hot messes out there!

          • The only thing about the outfit that sounds questionable to me is the material. Kind of shiny can mean anything from silk to really bad polyester. I have a coworker who has a lot of tops that in style and print are fine, but the bad polyester makes it look like they’re from Rave. I don’t like that fabric for the office (well, I don’t like it for anything, but that’s me), but that doesn’t necessarily make it inappropriate.
I do try to keep my sleevelessness to the first half hour after I come in from the metro in the summer or after the gym. Every other time/outfit get a sweater or jacket.

Rant: co-worker’s fiance passed away suddenly yesterday. Huge shock. They had just picked a wedding date.
Rant: fell outside on the concrete patio, scraping up my pants and knee. These are the same shoes I was wearing when I sprained my ankle two years ago. They’re getting tossed as soon as I get home.
Revel: Fell but saved my lunch
Fingers crossed: That my spill didn’t mess up my back.

RANT: One of my contacts tore this morning after I got to work, so now it feels like my face is melting and that I have blurry drunk vision. Compared to work though, I think I would rather be drunk with a melted face.
