The Drummer of Rock Creek Park

“Dear PoPville,

Last week I was riding my bike up Ridge Road NW (learning the hard way why it’s called that) when I started to hear a snare drum as I got to the top of the hill. Once I came around the final bend, I saw this guy with a whole drum set just doing his thing in the middle of the park! A treat for us riding and running by, and I suppose a clever practice space for someone who doesn’t want to disturb any neighbors. Anyone else ever come across him?”

That photo is begging to be on Popville’s caption contest!

  • Give the drummer some.

  • This isn’t as cool as the trumpeteer on the trails in Rock Creek

  • That guy is there for several hours most weekday afternoons. The deer have started to groove.

  • I love this. Just playing for the deer and the birds.

  • He has been doing that for years.

  • hopefully, this guy doesn’t happen to walk by….

  • I first saw and spoke to this drummer a few weeks ago myself. I have been riding Ridge Road for years and thought at first this was a motorcycle or someone with a very loud radio blaring. He is a super friendly guy. He has tried to set his drum kit up where it is in a secluded and there are a few hills around that prevent the noise from bleeding into the Forest Hills neighborhood. He is super nice, super happy, really loves practicing his craft, and is approachable. After a few hours in the saddle nothing is better than the random chance of running into him and appreciating his drumming.

  • On my walk home this afternoon around 5:30pm through Meridian hill Park I saw something very similar! It could very well have been this dude, set up with a full drum set, and he was accompanies by an electric guitar or bass player! They were even plugged into amps and just rocking away. It sounded really good too, kind of a funk and rock and roll mix.
