Looks like a pretty decent place, that’s a good location too. Would suck to have to share a single bath/shower area among 3 bedrooms worth of people though.

  • What’s the deal with the kitchen between the living room and the dining room? Is there a functional argument for this type of layout? I see it every so often in Hill renos and don’t really see the appeal vs. having connected living/dining areas and kitchen in the back. Strikes me as a hold-over from when the house may have been divided into small apartments with a bedroom in the back.

    • We’re adding onto our relatively narrow house to do this now. We want a formal dining room. And a large light-filled living room. And a large kitchen. All in rooms that are properly defined and separated. Given these parameters and structural/cost concerns of existing walls, putting the kitchen in the middle made the most sense to us.

We easily could have put the kitchen in the back of the house, but to make the living and dining rooms big enough for our tastes we would have had to knock down most of our interior walls and combine the two spaces. And that’s not what we wanted to do.
