Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

RAVE: My parents are coming in for the weekend tomorrow. We’re going to take them to the Nats game on Sunday.

RANT: I stepped in almost a foot of water on my usual path to work. Wet socks for the rest of the day.

  • Revel: BTWD!
Rant: The rain. Waiting to decide to ride or not, so only had time for one pit stop.
Revel: Riding in the rain. Finding out I’m tougher than I thought. Getting a t-shirt, water bottle, and patch kit.

  • Rave: Somehow avoided the Green Line fustercluck this morning.

Rant: Had to drive to Metro today. The one day I don’t bike to Metro is Bike to Work Day.

  • Accountering

    Rave: Kickball last night!
    Rave2: Bar after kickball!
Rave3: Mintwood had to sleep on the coach after bar, after kickball last night!
Rave4: Got coffees and bagel sandwiches from So’s Your Mom this morning for Mintwood and I, and he didn’t want his because it had half and half, so I am currently working on my second iced coffee of the morning.

Big Rave: Friday, and get to do it all over again tonight!

    • Is Mintwood a person? I’m very confused.

      • I used to live on Biltmore. I miss So’s Your Mom!

      • Accountering

Mintwood is my current roommate. Half man, half legend, half animal, 110% fun.

        • Please tell us he slept on the couch, not the coach.

        • You must live at 1862, b/c this sounds exactly like the life of my roommates and i when we lived there..

        • Accountering

Alas, he slept on the couch. I had just made it into the office, and was still waiting for coffee to kick in when I first wrote that!

We are at 1841, and yes, we are all over the place at the moment haha! It has been interesting, and a huge change, but I am enjoying things immensely at the moment, which feels really good after the drastic changes from earlier this spring.

Rant: people who doesn’t understand the rights of photographers and try to impose impossible conditions on contracts.
    Rave: Complaining worked! clauses waived.
Rant: I’m not good at conflicts, it takes lots of energy out of me.
Rave: traveling to a city I’ve never been to before.

    • Rant: Photographers who don’t understand the rights of individuals and assume that if I (or my child) gets in the way of your lens, we’re fair game for whatever commercial purpose you can imagine.

  • skj84

Rant: I wish I could’ve biked to work today. But still unemployed. I guess I can bike my errands.

Rave: Made some good connections networking yesterday. Plus I have a job interview on Tuesday.

Rave: Chill weekend! I have a race on Sunday so I’m taking it easy. Plus Carbo loading is awesome! All the bread. All the pasta. Nom, Nom, Nom.

Finally great turnout for brunch club sign ups! We have a doodle going for first and second brunch dates. Going to pick veues soon. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/popville-brunch-group

  • rant: flooded. again. after asking my landlord to patch up the leak after the last storm.
    rave: friday!

  • Rant: Decided not to bike through the rain, too hung over from kickball
Rave: Kickball girl was giving me some attention last night, and if i am not mistaken flirting with me. We didnt hook up or anything but she said she wants to help me with my community garden plot
Rant: so freaking hung over and dont feel like doing any work today

    • Accountering

You are friend-zoned for sure at this point. Not a bad thing, but thats where you are.

Which Kickball league are you in? Admo with after parties at Grand Central by chance? Or did we hear that you are on the mall?

      • Disagree that he’s friend zoned. Sounds like she’s trying to get him to ask her on a date. Bagelboy did you try to hook up with her last night? Be aggressive, b-e aggressive

        • I did not try to hook up with her, i honestly dont know how i did it the first time (not one to be doing the whole dance floor makeout thing) but she brought up that she talked to some people about my garden…and wants to help plant some beans (lol) i was like i need some help and i enjoy having company doing that (kinda feel awkward up there alone sometimes). And then we ended up staying kinda late at the bar (with a few others) watching the wizards game and i sat next to her (there was a little leg to leg contact) so i definitely got the vibe that she is interested…at least in getting to know me better. I think i will see if she is around on sunday to check out the garden…but i dont have her number argh why didnt i just ask last night….i suppose an email will do at this point

          • Just email her. Sheesh.

          • Accountering

You need to make a move! Also “note one to be doing the whole dance floor makeout thing” YET! Things and people can change. Your in a dive bar, theres nothing wrong with a bit of necking on the dance floor.

The leg to leg thing is a hint my man, you need to escalate, or else this door will for sure close. It sounds like it hasn’t yet, which I am surprised by, but you need to escalate, or you will 100% be in the friend zone. Burn the boat, and leave no avenue for retreat.

Get her number. Ask her out for drinks – gardening sounds like a friend activity, and that’s what you are presumably trying to avoid here?

          • Email her and be honest that you goofed on getting her number. Ask her if she’d still be interested in seeing your garden (not a euphemism) on Sunday. Don’t be let down if she says no as now it’s kind of late notice.

    • Logan Square, where are you??

    • houseintherear

      “community” “garden” “plot”
You should offer to help her trim the hedges. 😛

    • Good lord. She like like’s you. Just ask her out to meet at your garden and have a small table, wine and some food setup, candles and there you go.

  • Rant: Yesterday I magically had access to my personal email at work. Today the firewall is back in place. Annoying.
Rave: It is Friday. Thank all the god(s).
Rant: I woke up grumpy today.
Rave: I had an awesome dinner with a dear friend last night. I’m lucky to have such great friends, especially ones who are able to have blatantly honest conversations about the good, bad, and ugly of marriage and parenthood.

  • Rant: Headaches. I’ve been having them for weeks. I think maybe it’s allergy related.
    Rave: Friday!
Rant: Big work stuff to get through today before the weekend.
Rave: Going to spend tonight in, husband is going out so I get the whole place to myself.

  • Wondering: Does anyone know how many of the 10 million “patriots” that are suppose to be here today have shown up?

    • I saw a pickup truck with a sign that said “Restoring our Republic”. But he was heading the wrong way over the Memorial Bridge, so assume he was the only one that showed up and decided it would be best to head home to Va!

    • skj84

oh that was today? Hopefully the rain scared the ten people who were planning on showing up away.

    • I thiiiink I read something on here (in a rant/revel) that they had called off their DC march to have lots of local stuff instead. Apparently, this was due to infighting.

    • I’m sure they will do what they always do, show pics from some other rally or Obama’s inauguration and claim it is theirs.

    • Now i know why Metro was messed up today, the additional 10 million riders!

I was just on their website and that’s a whole lot of crazy and yes they are still marching today. I clicked on the DC Travel and Lodging link and they were recommending campgrounds in Virginia and for everyone to take the Metro since it would be too hard to get 10 million cars into DC.

I wonder if they’ve arrested Obama yet?

      • skj84

They planned on camping in VA and metroing in? SMDH. First of all what campgrounds are metro accessible? Second I don’t see that crowd fairing well on metro. Good luck with that.

      • Haha! They were all taking the green line into town this morning. Government wins!

  • Rant-ish: Colleagues who always use formalities when emailing me. You sit less than 10 feet away, what’s with the “Dear SFT” in every single email. And why are you sending me your “Warmest regards” every single time? I just don’t get it…

    • Emmaleigh504

I will add on to that with the overly formal IMs. It’s an IM you don’t have to address me as Ms 504.

      • Farragut

My mom used to finish her IM conversations with me with “Love, Mom.”

        • My mom used to start her IM’s with “Guess who this is”. I guess she didn’t realize that I could see her name. Moms are funny!

        • Ha! I set my mom up with AIM when I was in college. She would compose these massive emails
and then have to copy/paste (a skill she has since lost) to fit within the character limit. She would also respond to my away messages, so I had to keep it classy. She still writes pretty ridiculous emails to me. “Darling son…”

        • houseintherear

Every once in a while when he’s dictating a text through Siri, my dad will text me: “Tell her I will see her for dinner on Sunday” or “Tell her to try using a drill”. Ohh parents.

          • Hahaha — great anecdote, Houseintherear!
My mom is so tech-impaired that sometimes I have to tell her that I can barely hear her because she’s not holding the phone correctly. Given that it’s a flip phone, I don’t know how this is even possible!

      • Right. It makes me feel awkward, especially when people who I am friendly with address me formally. Like do they think I’m rude because my emails are short an to the point…and most likely don’t include their name at all? And I most certainly don’t send my regards, warm or otherwise. Who has time for all of that!?!

        • Farragut

For “Warmest regards,” It might be part of their signature block? I have my emails set up so that it automatically ends with “Thank you” followed by my name & contact info.

One of my best friends always begins his emails with “Dear so-and-so,” and he’s the oldest of my friends and we don’t even work together.

I think some people still treat emails like they were actual letters or memos instead of adjusting to the increasingly casual work environment. Most of my work emails are essentially templates, and we tend to address each other by title or desk job anyway.

        • Emmaleigh504

We have this help chat room we staff at work and some of the older/weirder people keep trying to get us to write out all these long, formal scripts to people to help them. I keep trying to remind people that not everyone has the same job title, some people get huffy when called 1 title over the other, and it’s a freaking chat room, first names are fine! Short and sweet. I’ve gone rogue, and call everyone by their first name.

  • Rave: First phone interview today! It’s been a while since I’ve interviewed so I’m a bit nervous.
Rant: Trying to focus on my grad school finals while also selling our house, finding a new home in a new city, finding a new job, and working my current job full time. Almost there, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel
Rave: So excited for our new adventure!

  • So excited the World Market in Chinatown (part of BBB) is now open!

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: Horrible night of sleep. I had weird dreams, then woke up sore, headachey, disoriented, and kind of cranky.
Rant: Vamp Diaries you are dead to me, DEAD.
Rave: Boss man out of the office, hoping afternoon meeting is cancelled, so the rest of the day can be slow.

    • I haven’t seen last night’s episode yet, but the plot was completely given away for me because I follow Nina Dobrev on Instagram. I’m glad I’m not the only Popvillian who watches VD.

      • Emmaleigh504

I should have seen it coming from stuff in gossip blogs, but I try not to follow gossip for shows I like, so I don’t get spoilers. This season was kind of terrible, but I would have kept on if they hadn’t done what they had done.

        • I didnt watch it yet, but as far as the season being terrible…I’m wondering if it would be a little better watching it serialized like in netflix…that’s how I’ve watched all the other seasons….

          also yay TVD!

    • I didn’t think it was too bad. Wasn’t a huge fan of the ending, but TVD always finds its way around things, so I am not sure the ending is something that will be permanent.

      • Emmaleigh504

lol I was sobbing; they do always seem to get around things, so hopefully!

        • Sadly we have quite a wait to see how it all turns out. I’ll miss the Salvatore brothers’ handsome faces on Thursday nights.

          • Emmaleigh504

I watch old episodes on Netflix when I need a fix, I think season 3 has the most topless Damon scenes 🙂

  • Rant: 100+ year old beautiful big oak down across my entire street along with some power lines. Unfortunately I can see now though it looked healthy outside, it was rotten inside the trunk.
    Rave: Power still on
Rave: my car was one spot back from the downed tree!!

  • Revel: Today’s rain means that Sunday’s Capitol Hill Classic 10K won’t be humid and hot. Woot!
Rave: No weather delays on the Red Line this morning. I was shocked! (My condolences to my brethren on the Green and Yellow)

    • skj84

I just ran on the Capitol Crescent Trail. It felt great, not too hot and a good breeze. Hoping for the same on Sunday.

  • Rant: I need to smudge this meeting I’m in.

Rave: I make my post-surgery debut tonight at the Hipster Y!

  • Rave: Chose to drive to work today rather than taking the bus/metro like I usually do, so even though I was thwarted by Rock Creek Parkway being closed, I was able to successfully avoid the green line snafu today.
Rave: Driving to work also allowed me a few more precious minutes singing with my smiley baby girl this morning before I had to take her to daycare. And more snuggles with the pup (who is 7 today!).
Rant: All of this heavy rain means that our annual birthday walk & hot dog with the pup isn’t going to happen this evening.
Rave: Really looking forward to taking the little one to her first baseball game on Saturday!

    • Farragut

Have fun at the baseball game! I think the Mets pitcher for that game is supposed to be Bartolo Colon, who is a treat to watch bat (see image here: http://imgur.com/r5XV1yV ).

      • Thanks! I actually look at Bartolo Colon as hysterical to watch in general. That image of him is great. I would love to see a pitching duel between him and Ray King (remember him?).

        • Farragut

I don’t know Ray King at all unfortunately, but he looks pretty amusing, too! I’m a Cards fan, but I’ve only ramped up my baseball-following in adulthood in the last few years.

Do you have some Nats (or general baseball) gear for your daughter tomorrow? I always melt in the kid sections at Modell’s.

          • Yep! She has a cute little Nats romper (in team colors, not in pink). I am beyond excited to get her into it. I wish we could find a Nats hat for her, but they are all still way too big! You’re right, it is hard not to buy everything in that section at Modell’s.

  • Rant, having only now just discovered Lil’ B, I am wondering what else I am missing out there and if this is what it means to be getting old.

  • Rave: margaritas at Haydee’s tonight!!!
Rant: friend was in a car accident this morning. She’s okay, but shaken up.
Rave: working on some screenplays with funny people on Sunday!
Rant: the inability of people to say “excuse me” on Metro. While walking into me or pushing me is somewhat effective, it’s also rude. I don’t wear headphones and I have good hearing, but I also stand about as far from the doors as possible and do not have eyes in the back of my head.

    • Ditto on your Metro rant. I hate when people can’t say “excuse me” when I’m sitting on the outer seat and he/she is sitting on the inside seat. Yes, I can see you gathering your things, and outright standing up to seemingly walk over my legs, without asking me to move for you. Ugh.

      • Rant: Or the people who do nothing when you say “Excuse me” on the metro. The number of vacant looks I’ve gotten is astounding.

        • Or the people who insist on sitting in the aisle seat and give you a dirty look when you say “Excuse me” so you can sit in the window seat. They could just move over to the window, but they make it look like it’s some huge deal to stand up for a few seconds.

      • Or those who gather their things and expect you to get up while the train is taking off or slowing down. I’ll get up when the train has stopped thank you.

  • Rave: Unprecedented streak of ticketless parking misdemeanors (parking more than 2 hours out-of-zone, etc, not blocking rush hour) remains intact!
Rant: makes me worry that the one thing the District has always done well is deteriorating.
Rave: No 5:20 practice due to monsoon rains.
    Rant: 2k erg tests Sunday

  • Rave: bought a new laptop
    Rant: price of new laptop
Rant: inertia led me to stay with the church of Apple
Rave: end in sight for the constant “your start up disk is full” messages and rebooting every 10 minutes

  • Rant: I’m having massive craving for wings today. No idea why.
Rave: I’m going to get J Bell’s wings for dinner. The girlfriend has no say in this matter, she will accept my diktat. 10 wing of 24kt sauce and 10 wings with medium buffalo sauce, plus their creamy mac n cheese. *drooool*
Rant: J Bell’s better be open!!!!
RANT: Friend from NYC is doing a destination wedding in Brazil this fall and I wasn’t invited. My whole crew of friends from NYC is attending, I’m feeling a bit left out. The trips sounds amazing, the wedding is on Fernando de Noronha (Google it and be amazed). I usually see her when I’m up in NYC and even let her and her partner stay with me last year when they were in town for a concert. Just a bit bummed about missing out on a great trip with old friends :-/

    • If your other friends are staying in Brazil for a longer period than just the couple days of the wedding, there is nothing stopping you from flying down to meet them after for a for a vacation. Or are there a couple you’d normally like to vacation with that you could ask if they want to make a week of it and you’ll meet them after they’re done with wedding duties?

      • People are on the island for 5 to 7 days together hanging out. It’s a really remote place. Afterwards, it seems like the couples are pairing off on their own trips to Buenos Aires, Rio, Chile, etc. Not sure what my single friends will be doing. But it seems like the vast majority of the “together” time will be on the island. C’est la vie.

    • RANT/SAD: Just found out that Julius Bell passed away last year. So sad! 🙁

  • New rave: That rainstorm passed way more quickly than I expected and now it’s beautiful out!! I’m so glad I remembered to grab my husband’s bikeshare key on the way out the door in case I wanted to bike home. 🙂

  • Rant/Rave: I have a flexible schedule so I waited out the rain to head in. Started at Harvard and walked
down 16th St. all the way to P, with a stop for coffee before a bus showed up. Thankful for nextbus and the nice weather. Can’t understand why so many people don’t check nextbus.
Question: I told a guy who passed me on his bicycle that he looked sharp. Does that count as a cat call? I’m female.

    • dcgator

Kind of, but, let’s be honest, he probably enjoyed it.

    • Accountering

I dressed up today, and am wearing a sport coat and look awesome. If you had told me I looked sharp, it would have made my day, so no, not cat-calling to me at least.

  • justinbc

Rave: The food at Barrel last night was excellent. I was really impressed with their ability to pull off some traditional Southern dishes, and to do it in relatively affordable fashion. Some of their “small plates” could easily be a whole meal.
Rant: The drinks at Barrel left something to be desired. The actual barrel aged cocktails were far superior to any drink that required effort by the bartenders. They tasted like they had mostly proper ratios, but just weren’t mixed well. Hopefully this improves over time. Side note: going downstairs to the “Elixir Bar” yielded much better mixed drinks.

  • Rave: Almost done with the proposal I’m writing. Had a couple of minor panic attacks earlier in the week about all that needed to be done, but I’m feeling good about where we are.
Rave: Glad to be back in Uganda with my team here. Home office politics have been suffocating lately, it’s been nice to dive in and focus on the real work and why I’m in this field.
Rant: Too much time spent in the hotel and office, not enough time to actually enjoy Kampala.
Rant: Missing my bf and our house. Such a conflicting feeling – I really wish we were in a position for me to take a position in the field, I really don’t like working at headquarters. But life circumstances make that impossible, at least for the next several years. Plus I love our new house 🙂

  • Rave: I really appreciate how respectful the “Do you believe in God” post was this morning. It was a prime topic to go awry, and we all kept it classy!

    • I think PoP did a *lot* of moderating of the discussion, as seen by his later edit to the post, asking comments to be respectful or not to comment at all.

  • Accountering

Just registered for Tough Mudder this fall. 10-12 miles, and I registered for an early Saturday time. Going to take it fairly serious, and really try and challenge myself. Should be fun!

  • Raves: Great bike ride downtown – too late for BTWD but also late enough to miss the bad weather. And I finished my meeting just in time to see President Obama leaving Shake Shack : )
No raves – it’s a beautiful day, and it’s Friday!

  • RANT: Staff in the field giving me attitude because they think they know my job better than I do after having done a month at HQ. Puh-leaze. I would really like to humiliate you in front of all your staff that you’ve put on this email, but I will try to remain calm.

    RAVE: The weekend is coming!

  • KSB

Rant: I feel like this has been ranted on before, but the misuse of apostrophes to pluralize something. Oh, I’m sorry, apostrophe’s to pluralize something.
Rave: Otherwise intelligent people who do this and it reveals to me that they, too, are flawed.
Mini-Rave: Pluralize is a fun word to say… pluralize.

  • Rave: Second date with Coffee Meets Bagel Boy next week
Rave: Done with interviews for job
Rant: ^ That means waiting through the weekend or longer to hear if I got it.
Rant/Rave: ^ Also means lots of thinking to see if it’s the right career move and if I should accept said job should it be offered.
