New Escalator at Petworth Metro Gleaming – Not Ready Yet but Gotta be Getting Close

@YellowSimpson tweets us:

“Progress at Georgia Ave Petworth metro. But who knows when they’ll turn it on.”

If it works anywhere near as good as it looks – we’ll be set!

  • As soon as they finished that platform escalator — which had been under construction for a long, long time — they started working on its mate, the other platform escalator. 🙁
    I think they ought to run the gleaming new escalator (just in the “up” direction — people coming down from the mezzanine can use the stairs). If they don’t, it’ll get litter on it and won’t stay gleaming for long.

  • As soon as they finished working on the platform escalator pictured… they started working on the other platform escalator.
    I wish they’d at least run the new one in the “up” direction.

  • Oops, that was me posting pretty much the same thing twice.
    I am getting a LOT of “504 Gateway Time-out” error messages today.

  • How long did this take? 6 months at least? its mind boggling how long it takes to replace such a small thing. Don’t even get me started on the street escalators–those are alternate being shut down every other week for the 3 years I have lived in Petworth.

    • +1. It’s really annoying.

    • I remember talking to a guy working on a Metro escalator a few years ago. He “marveled” at the “joy” of working on 1970’s no-bid government contract work. If I remember correctly, he said that the difficulty was that the options were either completely ripping the thing out, which required pretty extensive substructure work, or fixing things piecemeal, which often resulted in mating new components with old crap and knowing that it would the old components would fail in a not-very distant future.

  • I can’t wait for this to work for 20 minutes before breaking down and being under construction for another 6 months!

  • The escalator was working briefly on Friday morning, but I noticed something was leaking from the ceiling onto the middle of the escalator. I doubt that’s a good sign.

  • I can’t wait for that blue wall thing to go away. I feel like I’m going to get Zoe Barnesed every time I walk by it.
