Dear PoPville – Looking for a Local Handyman

“Dear PoPville,

Do you have a reputable handyman living in town, who you would feel comfortable recommending? I need a general jack-of-all-trades type of person for miscellaneous small jobs, and prefer to support a local, rather than have someone driving in from the suburbs.”

  • This guy has been by far the best experience I ever had with a contractor:
    Doug Lewis, Fairchild Renovations
    cell 202-744-2105
He repaired serious flood damage in my house and since then has taken care of minor repairs for the last 2 years. Fair prices, communication is very good, overall a really good experience so far.

  • Look up “Green Apple DC” on google; it will show up with Yelp reviews and contact information. Mickey “The Pencil” Cappiello (the nickname makes sense in person) did a great job on our place, had fair pricing, and was the furthest thing from sketchy. Check him out.

  • Angie’s List

  • We used metro construction for a bathroom remodel and to work on a stairway. I think they would also be up for smaller, handyman type of work.

    • We had a nightmare experience with Metro and would caution anyone from using them. Work was shoddy, not up to code, and left more damage than the cost of the job. Check them out on BBB.

  • Ned Ponders is local in NW DC and can do anything from basic handyman type work to more complex projects. I used him to seal up a leaking exterior door and he did great work. He’ll come out and give an estimate before doing any work and was right on his estimate for the project I used him for. Look up Kremer Construction, that’s the name of his company.

    • Ned came to our house to offer an estimate. He never followed up with the estimate and didn’t return phone calls.

  • There’s a nice trustworthy young man just finishing up for me in Mt. Pleasant. Spanish speaking. English good. Felix Construction 301 404 9596. Work and advice very good. Prices reasonable.

  • I have had amazing work completed by a local DC Handyman/Contractor. His expertise is carpentry (he did a great closet renovation for us) but he can do ANYTHING. From painting to full remodels.
