Speaking of Sweet Signs – Check Out the Sick New Neon Alphonse Italian Market & Osteria One on U Street

Thanks to a reader for sending the awesome night shot above. Back in November admired their, then, new awning and this makes it so much sweeter. Alphonse Italian Market and Osteria, from the owners of Russia House and Biergarten Haus, is located at 1212 U Street, NW next to Ulah Bistro by the U Street metro.

Looks like they’re still working on the inside (and the upstairs windows) but the upgrades outside are a very good sign (sorry, early case of cabin fever) the inside will be something to looking forward to seeing too. Updates as they get closer to opening.

  • This reminds me of something from the 1950s. I’m dubious that conspicuous signage is a sign of restaurant quality. Komi, considered by many the city’s best restaurant, has a tiny plaque out front. (Its next-door sibling, Little Serow, has no sign at all.) Neighborhood stalwarts Doi Moi and Estadio also have very small signs.

    • Only on popville would someone not only try and gauge the quality of a restaurant that hasn’t even opened yet based on the sign, but would then compare said restaurant to that of a James Beard Award winning chef. Just to prove how inane your argument is, Republic in Takoma Park has a big bold sign, and the food there is great.

    • Yes, Doi Moi. Neighborhood stalwart since opening 6 months ago. Truly a sign of what has and always will be successful.

  • The opening for this place has been delayed a LONG time. Not shocking bc I never really see people working on it. Hope I’m wrong and it opens soon!!!

  • I love this sign! And since I live right around the corner I can’t wait for it to open.

  • Great sign, but please shovel your sidewalk Ulah and Alphonse. It’s the only spot on the block that is an icy mess.
