Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

Photo by PoPville flickr user elleno1975

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

Ed. Note: the photo above of “Sunset on steam” is absolutely phenomenal. And I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank (rave) about all the incredible PoPville photographers who have really been stepping up their game lately. You guys are amazing! Thanks to all who have contributed and keep ’em coming!

  • Rant: The painted van on Columbia Rd. in front of Kalorama Park. It’s been there for almost three months. This is prime parking on evenings and weekends and I feel like he’s taking advantage of street parking.

    • I’ve watched a old little silver coupe with 2 flat tires take up prime parking real estate in my neighborhood for 3 months now since I’ve moved in, all signs indicate it’s been there far longer than that. I thought perhaps it being a disabled vehicle could warrant a tow from 311, but they came out and checked the registration (which is still valid) and that was that. I feel your frustration.

    • Street sweeping will get them soon enough, yes?

  • Rant: My garbage and recycling is still out there, waiting to be picked up. C’mon DC…
    Rant: Still cold out there.
Rave: Two bulbs in my yard are starting to poke out of the ground. My indoor plants are flowering. Spring is coming, for real!

  • Rant: Person playing music or a loud movie at 11:30 pm last night. Knocked on their door three times and they never responded. They did end up turning it down or off once I got back to my apartment. Will be leaving a note on their door about the quiet hours policy in our building. If you’re going to be a nuisance, at least have the guts to answer your door!
Rave: My other neighbors are awesome!
    Rave: It’s Friday.

  • Rant: The building in the picture for this RROR thread is an example of pretty much everywhere I work. The rood is on fire, but mgmt wants to ignore that and have everyone work on installing a new front door and granite counter tops. The story of my life, at least the paychecks are good for now.

Rant: I really need a vacation that involves a seat on a beautiful beach, hula girls, and non-stop PinaColadas.

Rave: Getting a new washing machine and dryer delivered this weekend, so at least I’ve got that going for me. Highlight of my week I tell you.

Rant: Thinking about doing a re-fi to pay off student loans, not looking forward to a higher interest rate and the paperwork process, but at least it will make the payments tax deductible.

Rant: Taking care of a parrot and a dog on my own now, it’s hard being a single parent. I didn’t even get a chance to be on MTV’s 16 and pregnant. Boo Hoo… Happy Friday yall. 🙁

  • gotryit

    Rave: Not sick anymore
Rant: I’m a big baby when I get a fever. Totally useless.
    Rave: Happy.
Rant / rave: Wearing reading glasses for the first time. It makes reading so much easier now, but wow… aging… I used to have 20/15 vision…

  • rant: falling asleep at my desk for some reason. it’s annoying and i can’t wait to not be at work.
rave: awesome weekend ahead! i get to spend all day tomorrow with my best friend and we’re capping the day by going to the swatchroom salon event at hierarchy in adams morgan.
rant: my heat has been out since last saturday. after the HVAC team finally came yesterday and replaced a part, which was delayed to the storm on monday, my heat started blowing cold again about an hour after they left. and yet i still paid $400 last night. wtf.

  • RAVE: Safeway has been sold to Albertsons. Lets just hope the service at the DC stores improves.

    • Sorry to hear you dis the service. The one on MacArthur Blvd is just terrific. In fact they have all of my phone numbers in case my Mother with early stages of dementia wanders in on her own…Jackie, Latrice, Barbara: they all are so great…

    • I agree. The Safeway on 17th St NW is a disaster.

Rave: Lenovo laptop sale. Over 30% off from the website, plus another 5% cash back for paying with Discover. Finally upgrading my 3 year old HP.

  • Rant/rave: Slight hungover from a lovely surprise birthday party for a friend last night. Oh, I was in rare form.
Rant: The growing welt on my arm thanks to my allergy shot. The things I do for my kitty overlord.
Rave: Friday! So grateful for the weekend ahead. I am going to try to get my sleep schedule back on track. I think spin and hitting the gym will help with the sleeping issues I have been having this week.
Rave: 60 degrees on Saturday! So grateful for some warm(er) weather.
Rant: Plucked a mutant white (white!) hair out of my eye brow this am. I love my dad’s family, but I so wish I hadn’t inherited their tendency to grey so early. At least I also got my aunts’ awesome legs.
Rave: If mutant white hairs are the worst problems in my world right now, I’m doing more than okay.

  • Rant: dogs/cats without collars and tags. So many lost pets could be reunited with their owners much more quickly.
Rave: looking forward to to nice running weather tomorrow.

    • I have (indoor) cats, and when I see a cat outdoors I generally try to check its collar to make sure its not lost. However, even with a collar, you never know whether its lost or not lost. I assume that most people just think a cat outside is meant to be outside and isn’t lost. If a dog is alone outside, you know something is wrong but if a cat is alone outside, you just never know. I have actually called owners from the cat’s collar to make sure the cat wasn’t lost, but I would bet that most folks just ignore a cat hanging out outside.

    • My cat doesn’t wear a collar, and he does go outside. I have probably spent $100 on collars and tags for him, but he’s a Houdini with those things. And the weird thing is, they never turn up. I don’t know where he hides ’em. On the occasions he has had a collar, I get phone calls from people standing in front of my house. “Um, hello… we found your cat, I think he’s lost.” No. He’s in his own front yard. Scratch his ears, and go on your way.
Anyway, being permitted outside is beneficial to his health. Scoff all you want, but it’s true. Right now we’re dealing with a five-day run of vomiting and FLUTD (makes him pee blood, and is exacerbated by stress) because he couldn’t/wouldn’t go outside in the snow. I’ve had years to observe the pattern, and thousands of dollars in veterinary education on the subject. Any time he can’t get out, his lower urinary tract freaks out, he’s in enormous pain, and he pees on any soft thing he can find.
I’ve heard more than enough overwrought judgment about my cat, so please know that I will dismiss further pearl clutching. I do what I do for the wellbeing of my beloved pet. Period.

      • Wow, beloved pearl clutching? Not sure why you think I am against indoor/outdoor cats. I’m not, I’m tired of seeing posts of “is this your pet ?” when a collar with tags is such a simple fix. Examples: I came across 2 dogs that got out of the house and were running up and down the sidewalk and called the owner. The owner came to get them all within 20 minutes. Or my friend who was hit by a car while walking the dog and was called, thanks to the ID tag, as soon as WHS found the dog.

      • If you try any future collars on your cat, maybe you could use one of the lines on the tag for something like “IND/OUT CAT”?
My cat is an indoor-only cat. When I had her tag made up, I put her name, my phone number, and (because I couldn’t think of anything else) my street address. I realized later that instead of my street address, I should’ve put “INDOORCAT” (there would’ve been just enough characters).
In her case, it probably won’t matter (she seems to be afraid of the outdoors, so she’s unlikely to dart out), but I agree that it’s potentially confusing to differentiate between lost indoor-only cats and cats that are allowed to be indoor/outdoor.

      • I absolutely agree, cats are much happier when they are allowed outdoors. We had two cats that we shuttled between our country place out in VA and our DC apartment. When they were in the country they were happy. When they were in the city they would howl at the bottom of the stairs, shit in the entryway and dart for the front door whenever anyone came in or out (and yes they had a clean litter box.) They didn’t start doing this until they were allowed to taste country life.
That said, the 2 of the 3 kittens from that Mom and her litter that were adopted by friends in the suburbs died by getting run over. So its still a good idea to keep kitty indoors around here.

  • Rave: Friday – date tonight in Petworth (woohoo), saturday no real plans yet, sunday going to the last maryland ACC game and then Broken Bells at 9:30
Rant: Just got back from the dentist – mouth is still numb. Going to be really tired after this weekend,

  • Rave: Aruba trip starts bright and early tomorrow. So ecstatic to be getting out of the cold for a week.
Rant: Driving to BWI tomorrow morning won’t be fun. Also – my recently root canal-ed tooth is still tender, which means no biting into things until its permanently restored. I miss sandwiches.

  • Rave(s): While I feel like the first trimester of pregnancy is kicking my butt, I’m very aware that it could be so. much. worse. We finally got to see the little pipsqueak on ultrasound this week, and the fact that I currently have two hearts beating inside of my body is really blowing my mind right now!

Additional Revel: Since things are going well, we’re finally telling our parents this weekend! At least one set is going to be completely over the moon. We’re not going public for a few more weeks, so this feels pretty big!

    • Congratulations! We have been trying to get pregnant for a while now and its an emotional and trying process, but it’s always fun to see posts like this from new moms!

      • Thanks – Trying to get pregnant is frustrating and crazy-making for sure! Good luck, and here’s to 2014 being an amazing year for you!

      • Best of luck to you, it definitely took some time with my second. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your OB if you’re past six months with no success. This is far more common than you think. Also, remember most insurance will cover higher-level interventions if it comes to that.

    • Congratulations!!! It’s such a special time. I know sometimes the days seem like they go on for weeks, especially when you’re nauseated and swollen, but it really does go by so fast. My one suggestion is to get a baby book now, and start writing things down, like when you tell your folks it’s fun to look back on their/your reaction, first kicks and things like that. Happy baby time 🙂

  • Rant: mind-numbing work
Rave: off to Rhode Island for the weekend!

  • Rant: Found out yesterday that a position I was really excited about has been filled. Bummed.
Rave: I have a job. Albeit a boring job, but a job.

    • I see you posting alot on here, what is your boring job?

      • I don’t really want to out myself – I think there are a lot of people at my org who read PoPville (I think a number of us don’t really have enough to do). I didn’t think I posted on here “a lot” compared to some names I see every day, but I guess I am a regular!

  • janie4

Rant – car needed work this week. Good-bye $2,800.
Rant – OCD sucks, and I’m going to have to be medicated for it forever, even if I learn to manage the compulsions better.
Revel – at least I can still work – so many people with OCD can’t.
    Revel – new job.

  • Rave: Big promotion at work means less stress about money.
Rant: It also means I get a peek behind the management curtain. Good lord, internal politics are painful.

  • Rant: Dropped my iPhone the other night and now no sound comes out of the non-speaker listening part. The audio still works on the speaker and through the headphones, which seems weird, right? My contract isn’t up until October and I was thinking of switching carriers then (currently with AT&T), so not sure what the next steps are…

    • The ear piece part is replaceable and is cheap. Less then 10 bucks on ebay for an iphone 5 replacement part. Look for a local repair cell phone repair store.

  • Rant: I had a task to complete at work, and there are 2 different methods I could choose. In the abstract, Method #1 is better, but on the ground, Method #2 actually worked better with the details of this particular situation. Okay, fine. I used Method #2 and sent the results to my micro-managing, self-important boss.

Now, Mr. Pompous McWindbag wants me to redo the task with Method #1 so he can compare and decide which is better. I’m 100% certain that he will agree with me once all is done, and I resent having to waste my morning doing this.

  • RANT:

Hundreds or even thousands of people arrive at Union Station each weekday and need to make it to the Capitol complex for work or tourist reasons. But why is this so difficult? You need to wind your way through the tour buses and taxis and pedestrians and homeless people at Union Station; then you need to cross one road in which the pedestrian walk sign is on for a grand total of about 12 seconds before the traffic tries to mow you down; then you need to cross another road in which the pedestrian walk sign is on for about 12 seconds before the traffic tries to mow you down (and which, by the way, is NEVER coordinated with the first crossing, which means you need to wait again). Should it be this hard for people to get from one of the city’s biggest transit hubs to one of its biggest places of employment? It’s like an obstacle course.

  • I’ve got my own Friday question:

Has anyone out there in popville gotten married at Glen Echo Park, specifically the bumper car pavilion? If so, would you be willing to entertain a couple of logistical questions?

  • Rave: Just a sprained ankle! Very excited that I didn’t superbly injure myself from a fall earlier this week.
    Rave: Warmer weather this weekend.
Revel: I’m pretty sure my dog compensates not having a tail with a ridiculous amount of bum wiggling. Wiggled himself straight off the sidewalk when he saw his spaniel bestie this morning!

    • houseintherear

Haha, that’s cute. My dog wiggles himself off the couch at least once a week- oof!

      Hope your ankle feels better.

  • Rave: The Dalai Lama at the National Cathedral this morning followed by lunch with an old friend.
No rants – it’s Friday and the sun is shining.

  • epric002

request: need suggestions for a restaurant for tomorrow night for 8 people. party includes pescetarians/those with healthy eating preferences. not looking to spend beaucoup dollars. i live in coheights/petworth, so areas around there are ideal, but will go anywhere in DC that is taxiable/metroable. not usually stumped as far as these things go…

  • Rant: Sentencing was supposed to be today, but got deferred by a day. Talk about a let-down.
Rave: They haven’t been let off for a slap-on-the-wrist for murder 1 (yet).
