UPDATE: Owner Located!

  • Please take him to the humane society so his owner can find him…. I am sure they are frantic for that cute pup!

  • Oh dear, he’s soooooo cute!

  • Taking animals to the humane society is not a good idea if it can be avoided. They have to kill dogs by lethal injection when they run out of space. The best thing is to give flyers to the humane society and your information, publish the pictures everywhere, and try to find the owner.

    • I second the Washington Humane Society recommendation. They would be able to activate a microchip if this pup has one and that would allow them to identify its owners.

      If You Found an Animal
If you have found a lost or abandoned animal, please contact the Washington Humane Society as we may be able to provide guardian information if the guardian has filed a Lost Report with us.

If you are able to safely house the animal while you wait for a guardian to come forward:

Call 202-576-6664 (option 2) and file a Found Report so that we can connect a guardian with you when they call. If you choose this option, we encourage you to bring the animal to the adoption center to be scanned for a microchip and to be photographed for the website.

Many forms of ID tags are traceable so please alert the WHS representative to any ID, vaccination or microchip tag you see. If we are able to identify the animal remotely by researching an ID tag, and you elect to retain the animal while we locate the guardian, a photograph of the pet can be submitted to [email protected] in a jpeg format.

Flyers placed in your neighborhood can aide in reuniting a pet with his/her guardian as well as posting on Craigslist under the lost/found community page.

If you need the animal to be housed at the shelter:

Drive the animal to the New York Avenue adoption center located at 1201 New York Avenue, NE. Be prepared to report landmarks or crossroads where the animal was found.

If you cannot transport the animal, contact DC Animal Care & Control dispatch line at 202-576-6664 (option 1).

Animals are held for a period of five days before they become property of the Washington Humane Society.

    • You are being inflammatory. Of course overcrowed shelters must euthanize animals – but it’s not going to happen overnight. The humane society is staffed by dedicated animal lovers who have a great incentive to find homes for animals and who too often have to deal with the awful results of too few homes. But a cute puppy found in a neighborhood is not going to get the jab.

Of course, if someone who finds a lost animal is able to take care of it instead of taking it to the shelter that is golden! Thanks to the people who took this little guy into their home!

      • The point is the puppy is taking up space that could be used. Sure, the cute puppy won’t be put down, but if another dog comes in and there’s no more room… Even with “dedicated animal lovers,” you can only do so much. If there’s no room, there’s no room. That’s why they encourage keeping lost animals in your own home if at all possible. You’re freeing up valuable and desperately needed space for other animals.

  • My vet told me that she often has people bring in found pups to have her check their microchip, so if the finder has a pet/vet already, perhaps they could do a check. What a cute pup, I’m sure the owner is a wreck.

  • My husband and I found a dog, who was in pretty bad shape on our back porch about a year ago. We took the dog to WHS to see if he had a microchip/ owner. WHS told us they give the owner a week to claim the dog before putting the dog up for adoption, which is protocol. We decided to fostering the dog after no one claimed him and ended up finding him a great home.
