Thanks to a reader for sending word:

“This new (maybe 2 weeks old) sign for ‘Craft Beer’ has me intrigued, though I may be getting ahead of myself as I can’t find any information on what this might be. New signage appeared at 1412 Pennsylvania SE, the old location of Indigo Frenzy which closed a few months ago, but I see no permits in the windows & cant find anything online. Any ideas? In a peek through the window there do seem to be stacks of boxes of 750mL bottles.”

Anyone know if it’s a bar or store? I’m getting some google hits for a sports bar called Shooter’s but can’t see any details. 1412 Pennsylvania Ave, SE is located right near the Potomac Ave metro stop a few storefronts down from Trusty’s and Wisdom.

Update – reader finds their facebook page: 1412 Hops & Vine

“Local wine and craft beer store, with a selection that will make your head spin. We’re glass half empty kind of people, come see why…

Here at 1412 Hops & Vine, we think a full glass is overrated. A full glass means you haven’t tasted anything yet, it means you’re still missing out on the good stuff. At 1412 Pennsylvania Avenue, we believe in grabbing life by the growler handle and chugging deeply. Don’t know what a growler is? Don’t worry, we’ll teach you, that’s what we’re here for. Well, that and to quench your thirst. 1412 Hops & Vine has over 250 unique beers and wines. That’s something for everyone, from the newb just wetting their whistle, to the guy or gal that’s brewing at home. No matter where you fall in that spectrum, you’ve come to the right place.

So go ahead and drink up. After all, we’re “glass half empty” kind of people.”

  • I was drove by this a couple days ago and was wondering the exact same thing! I thought they were going out of business and was disappointed, can’t wait to see what it is all about once it opens though as I would certainly frequent.

  • Per the DCRA property info system, it looks like a store.

    RETAIL BEVERAGE STORE

  • The other half of the sign says ” local” – implying only local craft beers. Are there enough DC brewers to warrant a store? Or does local=regional?

  • mensan98th

A craft beer store within crawling distance of my house. Perhaps a bad idea.

  • Does anyone know what will end up being in the retail component yet next to wisdom? Someone told me matchbox but that seems like a foolish location to me.

  • Shooters was a retail store that was located there before Indigo Frenzy .

  • 1) The retail space on the corner of Penn and Potomac is slated to be an expansion of NY Pizza from across the street. I assume at some point the old building will be torn down and the parking lot and adjacent parcels will be redeveloped (https://twitter.com/NOpkins/status/447023873716793344)

    2) The building on the NW Corner of Penn and 15th will be all retail. The building on the NE corner of 15th and Penn will be all Condos (old Domino’s). The building at KY and Penn will be mixed-use retail and residential (old car lot).

  • Boxes of empty bottles suggest a store that will be selling craft brewing equipment for home brewers. Maybe they will also be selling beer but if that’s the case, there should be an application for a liquor license somewhere. Is there a market for such a store? Perhaps. Home brewing is becoming a thing again.

  • It’s going to be retail dedicated to showcasing craft brews (beers, ciders, etc.) from around the country. The project has been in the works for a while now, and is tentatively going to have a tasting room (thing DC Decanter on Barracks Row but not as precious) for public and private tasting events. Developer is dialed into DC’s beverage scene so it should be a hit. Fingers crossed!

  • Their facebook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/1412hopsandvine

I know I shouldn’t judge the store based on a couple of pictures but it’s difficult not to. And my enthusiasm has been both tempered (mediocre to good beer in the one picture of their current unrefrigerated stock) and increased (focus on growlers)

  • I fear for them. Harris Teeter, Safeway, World Wine all have decent selections and even the liquor and corner stores up 15th have enough craft beer selection to keep me trying new things. A straight up store will have trouble–would have been awesome if a brewpub like Right Proper anchored that end of Hill East. But good luck to them.
