  • The scary part is how close this is to the police station at 17th and V.

  • 1700 U NW is almost directly across from a police station. Did someone really car-jack across from the station? Wow, that takes some balls (or major stupidity)!

    • I live very close to this location. For the police station to matter in this situation, MPD officers would actually have to notice something other than their phones when driving around there. It seems that officers driving around the station are either beginning or ending their shifts and don’t particularly care about what’s happening around them.

    • Must not be that stupid if they haven’t been caught yet 🙂

    • They said it was the 1700 _block_ — although 17th and U is where the police station is, the 1700 block itself is residential and not especially well-lit, and doesn’t get much foot traffic.
Wasn’t there a posting here not long ago from someone who got mugged on the 1700 block of U Street NW?

  • Is the address wrong? Is there a gas station at 17th and U? I’m wondering if this is 15th and U where the Sunocco station is.

    • Seems to me that the actual carjacking took place at 17/U, but the camera at the gas station at 15/U caught video of the people they suspect.

  • That can’t be right…I live on 13th and U so I walk past 17 & U all the time and as far I know, there are no gas stations at the corner. The closest gas stations in the area that I know of are at 15 & U and 14 & W. There may be one a block away I don’t know of, but this definitely isn’t 17th and U NW.

  • Yeah, that address doesn’t make sense. And there’s an Exxon logo on one of the signs in the video, so it can’t be the Sunoco at 15th and U either.
Maybe this was in a different quadrant??

  • There was a carjacking, a robbery and a shooting all within a month or so of each other last year or the year before, all at Peabody and GA Ave/Missouri and GA Ave.

It’s actually pretty smart if you think about it. Have you ever been to a restaurant around the 5pm shift change? It’ll take 15 minutes minimum to be sat and seen by a waiter.

    • Uh, waiters? Shift changes?

    • brightwoodess is drawing an analogy between the shift change at a restaurant and the shift change at a police station. Smart, maybe too smart on a blog at 5:30pm on a workday, speaking of other shift changes… 🙂

      • Brightwoodess didn’t specify at what time the carjacking, robbery, or shooting took place. Did they take place at the time of the police shift change?
She also didn’t specify (for people who aren’t familiar with the area) that the Fourth District police station is on Georgia just north of Peabody.
