Towering Over Shaw’s Tavern

1839 6th Street, NW

I’ve been getting a lot of requests to post about this one next to Shaw’s Tavern at 6th and Florida Ave, NW. We checked ’em out back in October and learned a building permit revealed it will be a 7 unit building by a company called The Ella, LLC.  Not to be mistaken with this Ella.

  • I almost feel bad for this Ella. She’ll forever stand in the shadows of the other. :-/

  • I dont mind this. Good for some variation on a busy street (FL Ave).

  • Doesn’t Shaw Tavern have a roof deck?

  • Dear Prince, think we could get an update on the other Ella? Did the units actually sell at those asking prices (which seemed wayyy high to me) of over $800,000?

    • Just checked, and with schadenfreude I can report that none of the three are under contract, and they are holding another open house this weekend if you’d like to see the glory hole in its full glory. Hopefully the owner/builder has learned a lesson.

    • I too was curious about the status of “the other” Ella and googled them just now. The address is 1013 V St., NW. There’s an open house from 1-3 this upcoming Saturday (Jan 12).

  • Hard to tell how it will look until the exterior finishings go up. But, looks like a good size for the area. Dupont has tons of taller apartment buildings right next to row houses. Shaw has always seemed relatively underbuilt considering how centrally located it is.

  • how tall is that structure?

  • The building is like Shaw Tavern’s beer prices used to be: higher than everyone else around.

  • Speaking of Shaw’s Tavern, are they ever going to get their act together? I think the only reason they stay afloat is because they don’t have a lot of competition.

    • i really like Shaw’s tavern. Loved the live music and camaraderie on NYE this year.

    • I like them a lot too. We’ve enjoyed their brunches, a few lunches, and a couple of weekend dinners with some fun live music. Not to mention their fantastic st. Patrick’s Day street fest 🙂

    • They are soon to have tons of competition, actually. Right Proper just opened up the street, and the average beer is just $4. Then there’s All Souls at 8 and T, three Passenger-owned bars at 7th and T, and a new spot at 7th and Q. I’m hoping this helps to drive Shaw’s prices down.

      • They have already dropped their prices by at least $1-2 across the board. They are now more-or-less in line with everyone else.

      • I’m glad to hear that they’ve made improvements. My experiences not long after they opened kept me from going back, but now I’m willing to give them another shot.

        • Eh, I wouldn’t go too far out of my way. Give Right Proper a try if you haven’t yet! Delicious food in addition to interesting beer.

  • I’d like to know what’s going on with the house on the other end of this row – the one that must have been condemned as it clearly has structural flaws. There’s a chain link fence around it now. I wonder if it’s about to be torn down before someone gets hurt…

  • It’s been under construction for what seems like years now, with all that wood just exposed to the elements. Not sure what the holdup is for the developer, but someone is loosing money for sure. It’s a little too tall for the rest of the neighborhood

  • Looks like another sturdy building. I’m sure the solid construction will block out all the traffic noise on FL Ave
