From MPD:

“Yesterday afternoon at about 3:00 PM, two PSA 107 Officers saw a subject, known to them as a package thief, standing in the 200 block of 11th St SE holding several items that appeared to be package contents. The Officers made contact with the subject and after further investigation they were able to identify the property as being stolen from the front of a home in the 1100 block of Independence Ave SE. The subject, a 47 year old male of Southeast Washington, DC, was arrested and charged with theft and the stolen items were recovered.

Last night, shortly after midnight, 1D plainclothes Officers were conducting surveillance of a suspicious person in the 600 block of 7th St NE. As a result of the Officers operations, they stopped this subject in the 700 block of H St NE, and recovered stolen property that had been discarded by the suspect in 600 block of 7th St NE. Additionally, the suspect had several outstanding bench warrants that stem from earlier package theft arrests. This subject, a 52 year old male of No Fixed Address, was arrested and the property was recovered.”

  • Loving all the package theft arrests in my ‘hood. Hopefully, it’s a sign of good policing and not higher theft rates, but either way, props indeed!

    • FWIW, I live on 8th Street SE and have never had a package stolen. I think this is a case where enough victims have kicked up a fuss that the police are trying to do something about it. Regardless, I’m glad to hear of these arrests!

      • I haven’t either, but UPS and FedEx have stopped leaving packages recently and requiring that I leave a signed slip saying they can leave them (which I know isn’t strange in and of itself, but this was never the case before from the same senders). This kind of makes me feel like more of a target since it’s basically announcing to the world that a package is definitely getting delivered today, whereas if they just leave it, it’s fairly hidden by the landing at the top of the stairs.

  • These are grown ass men stealing packages like hoodlum yoots. No self respect. I figure either way we pay as a society: stolen packages or trying these punks in court.

  • Can we transfer these cops to Ward 4? Seems other wards are having success arresting people, yet Ward 4 (Columbia Heights & Petworth) are not having any luck. What gives???

    • It all comes down to the priorities of the commander. My guess is that the commander in the Capitol Hill area is placing an emphasis on busting package thieves and stressing that to the beat cops. Perhaps there’s even a quota.
Meanwhile, the commander in CoHi/Petworth might have other priorities. Serious crime (shootings, assaults, rape, violent muggings) seem to be more common in CoHi/Petworth, so perhaps that’s why you don’t hear about it as much.
Additional, the Capitol Hill unit might be more media savvy at spreading the word of their successes.

  • Had my first package stolen off my porch yesterday in petworth in 4+ years of living here.

  • This afternoon I noticed about 20 seconds too late what was probably a man taking a package from my next-door neighbor’s stoop. I didn’t have a good enough look to ID him for police, but had she been a nice neighbor, I would have run out and followed him while calling the police.

Had she been even slightly less than the horrible, vicious, petty, mean ugly-spirited vindictive person I know her to be, I might have at least run over and knocked on her door to let her know.

Though come to think of it – might have been fun to see all 300 lbs of her awfulness run out and chase his ass.
