Pedestrian Struck by Garbage Truck at 12th and H St, NW around 5am this morning

“Pedestrian Struck – 1200blk NY Ave NW – person struck by trash truck, trapped under rear wheels, 2nd RS req #dctraffic #dcfd Update – 1200blk NY Ave NW – pt extricated from under trash truck by rescue squad, transport to trauma center”

The condition of the victim is not yet known but NBCWashington reports:

“News4 cameras showed the front end of the truck on the sidewalk, police believe the driver may have been trying to back into an alley.”

UPDATE from MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit are investigating a traffic fatality which occurred at 13th and I Streets, Northwest.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that on Friday, January 17, 2014 at approximately 4:28 am, the driver of a 2007 Mack trash truck was traveling west bound on “I” Street, NW and then turned left onto southbound 13th Street, NW, and struck a pedestrian who was walking in the south side crosswalk. The trash truck continued southbound for approximately half of a block when the driver realized he had struck someone and called 911. The striking vehicle and driver remained on the scene. The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The decedent’s identity is being withheld at this time pending next of kin notification.

This crash is currently under investigation.”
