From MPD:

“The First District has seen an increase in package thefts the past few years around the holiday season. First District Officers are aware of the historic trend and are giving special attention to residential areas. Within this past week, we have made three arrests of individuals regarding separate package thefts. In two of these incidents, the Officers were initially alerted by concerned neighbors who called 911 to report suspicious activity. I would like to thank the citizens who reported the activity and request the assistance of the entire community in being vigilant and reporting to 911 anytime they observe suspicious activity or persons. In each of the below incidents, the stolen property was also recovered.

· On Friday November 29th, at about 6:45 pm, a 19 year old male was arrested for a package theft from the 200 block of 11th Street SE

· On Saturday November 30th, at about 9:30 am, a 50 year old was arrested for the theft of a package from the 600 block of A Street SE

· On Thursday December 5th, at about 7:30 pm, a 25 year old male was arrested for the theft of a package from the 1200 block of Independence Ave SE

In addition to your vigilance, we also like to ask that you consider having packages delivered to an alternate site (work place or friend’s home) where someone would be present to accept delivery.”

  • One of those is 4 blocks from house. Thanks, cops!

  • Agreed. I live nearby. Good job and please do your best to keep up the good work.

  • I can half understand a 19-year old and a 25-year old. But a 50 year old package thief?

    • Unethical people generally stay unethical. Though I suppose it’s fairly rare that garbage reaches the age of 50 without being locked up for good or killed.

      • As long as you restrict yourself to occasional petty crimes it’s quite easy to stay alive and out of jail.

    • Petworth had a little old lady package thief, not very long ago. That was on the listserv at the time, I recall someone said she was using a granny cart.

  • Did they ever catch the person or persons who have been stealing packages and anything not bolted down in Mt. Pleasant over the past decade or so? That seems like the best neighborhood in which to get away with anything. An open air drug market still operates in that area, and no suspect was ever arrested after the guy was murdered in cold blood while walking his dog on Irving Street 6-7 years ago.

    • Props to the cops indeed! So happy that they are cracking down on package thieves. Question for Anonymous: where exactly (block, intersection) is the open-air drug market in mount pleasant? I heard there was one 10 years ago but haven’t seen anything of that nature in MtP proper over the past few years. I’ve always assumed that the MtP package theft originates from those nearby housing projects in Columbia Heights…. on Harvard/Irving.

  • Last sentence of article: “In addition to your vigilance, we also like to ask that you consider having packages delivered to an alternate site (work place or friend’s home) where someone would be present to accept delivery.”

The problem with that option is not with with the thieves or the homeowners, but with the business model of the delivery companies. Delivery drivers are in a crunch to get through their day (all overworked, most paid by volume, as they are the more or less indentured servants to stockholder profits), so knocking or ringing the door bell and waiting is something of a burden these days. The best guys/gals do it and are saintly about seeing you get your package (my morning UPS guy is just such a saint); more and more, however, most merely drop your package off and run. No knock or door bell ring at all.

And so, depending on your zip code….
