Dear PoPville – Fun Ideas for New Year’s Day Activities?

Photo by PoPville flickr user MJWein

“Dear PoPville,

I would love to hear what readers suggest as activities for New Year’s Day. I am personally planning to be pretty low key NYE (hotel, bottle of wine) so that my partner and I can feel awesome the next morning and able to partake of glorious day-off activities. I thought about movies or museums, but anything less obvious that you know about? I’m not even sure what will be open!”

You may want to check out the US Botanic Garden. And for those looking for a brunch – Busboys and Poets for Pajama Brunch from 9am-4pm at all locations.

  • A hike through Rock Creek Park or the Arboretum? I think the first day of the new year is a good time to reconnect with nature. And Wednesday’s weather looks pretty good.

    • Ha, I clicked over here to make the exact same comment! I always like to take a little time for something invigorating on New Year’s Day, and outside if the weather is bearable. The zoo is open, as well. Or maybe make a plan to explore a new neighborhood that you’ve been meaning to explore for a while, but never seem to get around to it? (If that applies to you, and you haven’t been more or less everywhere around the DC area.)

    • Arboretum will be closed. Bummer, I wanted to ride my bike around there tomorrow.

      • Really? I checked their website yesterday and thought it said the grounds would be open (but the bonsai and visitor center would be closed).

  • If you want to go late night dancing, Flash is open until 12 noon on New Years Day. They are stopping alcohol service at 4am, serving alcohol again at 8am, and then doing a happy hour at 9am. Crazy.

Pajama brunch at Busboys and Poets sounds like fun. Their iced coffee is excellent.

  • I always have friends/casual open house that day – and right now am cooking the Burgoo (stew) – so I get extra days of aromatic delight. Also – several years ago I started cleaning my front door every New Year’s day – it feels really good. But a nature hike is always good too.

  • Thanks, everyone! I may hit up that brunch.
