  • The DC Police and Muriel Bowser are not following through on their commitment to keep Raymond Rec Center safe. Granted, this was at 3am, but I have seen people harassing families and kids and smoking weed or rolling dice on the sidewalk at all ours if the day — afternoon, after school and 10pm. Where are that promised “regular” patrols? This us becoming a hangout for young toughs — not families.

    • I also want to add that I routinely are people in their twenties and thirties hanging out just inside the fence or on the sidewalks outside the fence after a cool around 3-4pm. Generally they are drinking and smoking pot. I have even seen them racing cars which resulted in an accident one day. All this while grade schoolers are present. Its unsafe! It is incumbent upon those of us that live on that block to report these activities. Call 311. Help us police our neighborhood if the cops won’t do it.

    • Is becoming? I lived at 10th and Quebec 6-10 years ago and that’s what it was then. Except then no one even bothered to promise to make it safe. Though I did feel safe walking home from the metro late at night because I knew the dealers by name–they were living in the house next to mine.

      • The community raised concerns about this becoming a place to hang out for those up to no good. We were assumed of an increased police presence. Where is it? So diss appointing and I’ll remember it at the ballot box.

        • Right. I understand what you are saying.

I just think it’s odd that you keep saying it’s “becoming” a place for unsavory types to hang out. Because that it was it has been for a long, long time and a fancy renovation wasn’t going to change that.

That said, the dealers no longer live on Quebec Pl. at 10th, they were priced out right around the same time we were.

  • I agree. That whole area is in need of some extra police attention. I always pay extra attention as I walk near the corner of Quincy and 10th on my way from the Metro.

  • This is terrible. As to the extra police issue: there is almost always one or more patrol cars posted up in the parking lot across from the rec center, but probably not at 3am. The police do give this area extra attention and I don’t think we can expect 24 hour surveillance everywhere in this city. Also, people are allowed to gather and hangout in public spaces. This was a much bigger problem before the renovation to the rec center. Ask yourself why you feel uncomfortable seeing a particular group of people hanging out and don’t assume they are harassing innocent families.
