Metro unveils Four new Van Gogh Limited Edition SmarTrip Cards

“Four limited-edition Van Gogh Commemorative SmarTrip Cards are now available for purchase as Metro partners with The Phillips Collection to celebrate the Van Gogh Repetitions exhibit at The Phillips Collection through January 2014. The cards feature four prominent Van Gogh images: The Bedroom at Arles, The Road Menders, Madame Roulin Rocking the Cradle, and The Postman Joseph Roulin.

Each reusable plastic card comes pre-loaded with $8 in stored fare value for a total price of $10. The cards are available for pre-order online at and will be available in all Metrorail station dispensers by the end of October.

Metro riders can present their Van Gogh SmarTrip at The Phillips Collection for $3 off admission (normally $12), as well as up to 20% off purchases at the museum gift shop.”

  • What if you already have a registered SmartTrip card that auto-loads, but you want the pretty new card?? Can you transfer your money to a different card?

    • I’m pretty sure you can’t transfer fare between cards. You’d simply put a stop to the auto-load on your old card, use up that fare, then register your new card and set up auto-load on it.

      • Okay, thanks!

      • I’m not sure if an auto-load throws a wrench into this feature (I don’t auto-load, so I don’t know), but you can transfer money from one card to another. I’ve done it a couple of times when I’ve lost my card. You have to go online and report the card lost/stolen, and then request that the balance be transferred to your new card. Just know that the transfer can take a couple of days to process, so there could be a lag time when you wouldn’t be able to access those funds.

    • You could try taking the old card and the new card to one of Metro’s sales centers (or whatever they’re called — there’s one in the Metro Center station) and seeing if they can transfer the fare manually. Maybe they can’t, but perhaps worth a try.

I went to the exhibit on Tuesday while furloughed (Phillips is always closed on Mondays). It took me about an hour and a half and was really interesting. Also the cafe is run by Tryst and I had the yummiest Chicken Satay sandwich before touring the exhibit. Definitely worth checking out.

  • Just bought all four, thanks! So pretty!

  • Holy coolness, Metro! I hardly thought you had it in you!

    • I know, what a great idea! They should do more of these, seems like people are super excited.

      • totally agree… amazing idea… i just got mine! needed to replace the old card anyway, but didnt want to replace it with something that looked the same. sweetness.

  • These are nice enough and I don’t have anything against the idea, but it’s pretty much useless to me. I almost never take my Smartrip card out of my wallet; i just tap my wallet and the gates and fare machines read the card through the wallet. So if I got a commemorative one I would only see it very rarely. I am clearly not the market for these, but if Metro can make a few bucks – why not?
