Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • Rave: Diamond Club seats for the Nats game this afternoon. Cutting out of work early to enjoy the game, beautiful weather and beer!!

  • Rave: Biked from Silver Spring to NoMa on the MBT last evening and didn’t get attacked.
Rave: Awesome awesome AWESOME weather for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off at NoMa Summer Screen!

  • Rave: The weather.
    Rant: The whether.

  • Rant – I cannot get over this cold! It’s been over a week. I’m so tired of having to blow my nose 15 thousand times a day. Ugh.

Rave – Perfect weather! I haven’t been to the gym all week due to said cold, but I’ve been outside walking everywhere taking advantage of the beautiful weather and getting some fresh air and exercise.

  • Two packages stolen off our front porch yesterday. Jerks.

    • Related rant: Etsy seller from China is a month late getting me my package (ordered it back on July 8, the package tracking system hasn’t been updated since July 12). I wanted the items for Burning Man, but I’m flying out today and it still hasn’t arrived. Need to file a claim with PayPal. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

      • File that claim ASAP. I had an issue with an Etsy seller a few years ago. She vanished from the site, so Etsy claimed they weren’t responsible for giving a refund. Paypal wouldn’t let me open a dispute because too much time had passed between the transaction date and the claim date. A similar thing happened when I ordered something from China (from Alibaba) and they sent me the wrong item and never replied to my dispute. Again, Paypal claimed too much time had passed.

        • Thanks for the heads up. PayPal gives you 45 days, so I might wait a few more days to see if it arrives (roommate will let me know if the package arrives while I’m out of town). But yeah, I heard that Etsy won’t do anything to help you out. Buyers beware on Etsy.

          • They don’t give you much time to give the seller the benefit of the doubt, that’s for sure. Or to account for delays in production (which is especially likely if you’re buying something that’s custom-made).

  • Rave: Figured out where I’m moving to.
Rave: Figured out if I sell two of my sofas I have no reason to hire a moving company.
    Rant: Have to sell sofas.
    Rant: Have to move.

Rave: Last day in the office before a week-long trip to Newport! I can’t wait to relax on the beach, eat lots of delicious food, and explore the town.
Rant: I have so much to do before I leave. I work at a university — taking a vacation two weeks before the start of the semester was definitely not my most brilliant idea. Will definitely be on email while on the beach. Whomp.

  • Rave: Took the day off yesterday to have a great 2nd date.

Rant: Came home to my apartment to discover someone broke the door jam and made their way in. What was stolen? Nothing. They just took out a DVD out of my collection and placed it on the shelf in plain view. The DVD was The Walking Dead (which I haven’t touched since I got it 2 years ago). Also I never watch DVD’s anymore and I live alone. So zero chance I moved that by myself.

My laptop and $200 in cash in my wallet was in the same room on the coffee table and untouched.

So yea- someone is out to kill me.

    • What the f***! That is so creepy! I hope you called the police and reported it!

      • I did call the cops and one officer came over and he saw that the frame was definitely broken. But since nothing was stolen he classified it as destruction of property. I told him to fingerprint the DVD case left out and he just looked at me and said “No, we’re not going to do that.”

I know it happened between 11:30am-4pm and I asked all the neighbors and they didn’t see or hear anything.

But yes, one theory was he got in and was spooked and left very quickly.

I am a pretty big OCD person (and everyone I know knows that). So if anything is even slightly off in my apartment, I will notice it.

        • Yes, assuming someone isn’t trying to stalk or prank you, it’s pretty likely they got scared off. Something similar happened to me, years ago. The burglar had stacked up some DVDs as if putting them aside before searching for more loot, but then heard me trying to get in the front door (took me a few minutes of fiddling with my key b/c the pick was jammed in the lock) and beat it out the window without taking anything (except for my roommate’s dish of laundry quarters and box of condoms.) The police in my case took a few fingerprints, but nothing came of it. They did tell me to check the channel on the cable box and the contents of the fridge though–apparently, it’s more common than you would think that a burglar who thinks he (or she) has a little time will grab some food or booze and watch a little cable.

The Manson Family used to break into houses and move stuff around to freak people. I think they called it the creepy crawlies or something like that. I don’t think they killed any of the folks they did that to.

    • Could have just been they got spooked and took off.

    • Took a day off from work o go on a date? Now that is more interesting! Ive done this a couple times (not for a second date but with someone I was seeing and we worked opposite schedules); so much cool stuff to do in the city on a Wednesday afternoon!

      • You didn’t take your wallet on the date? Wow, that takes some gumption.

        • We were going to go kayaking on the Potomac so I just bought my ID and Debit card (just grabbed it out of my wallet before running out the door).

Rant: I took that photo across the street from the Watergate, there’s a huge pipe there labeled as “combined sewer”. It was a little bit disturbing to see 4-5 people fishing there. One of them caught a huge fish, then returned it to the water. Another group that looked as a family, kept getting fish and putting them in plastic bags. I hope they were not thinking about eating them, or selling them….
Rave: feels like Friday, so I’m listening to Pantera.

Confession: The UHaul post below reminded me of when we moved to our current house. Very long story short, I found myself illegally and inadvertently leading a moving van to our house via Rock Creek Pkwy. They missed hitting a bridge by thismuch. I blame a really long day and very low blood sugar for the fact that I let it happen. SO thankful that van wasn’t an inch taller.

  • Rant: What is up with contractors not calling/emailing you back? I have contacted probably about five different people on Angie’s list and haven’t heard back from one of them. We are looking to do a kitchen remodel. Has anyone had any luck with a contractor recently?

    • I’m using James Noel from Noel Design Build right now for a basement extension. I also had good interactions with Scott Evans from Positive Spaces and Keith Long from Spectrum Design Build. They were all pretty busy, so it depends on your time frame…

    • I am bummed out because I’ve e-mailed (twice) a handyman recommended on PoPville by epric002, and he hasn’t gotten back to me.

I also called Federal City Iron Works because of their being recommended here. It was after hours and I left a message… but a full day has passed an no one called me back.

  • Rave: Jozy Altidore

Rave: Quotia Zelda gave me an awesome canning book.
Rant: At work and not making yummy canned goods.
Rave: So excited to make some nectarine and lemon thyme jam this weekend!

    • Curious about the lemon thyme jam– I’ve been in a jam-making mood and my thyme plant has been going crazy. Usually I don’t like it when jam-makers get fancy and add herbs to the fruit, but I can see the herbal element being nice with something bracing like lemon. Is it going to be more like a curd or a marmalade?

      • Emmaleigh504

More like marmalade. I made a mixed fruit and rosemary marmalade 1 year that was amazing with pork chops. It was good on toast and stuff too, but better on the pork chops.

The recipe I’m making this weekend calls for lemon thyme not regular thyme. I actually have a lemon thyme plant so that works well. I also have an orange mint plant so I will make a batch with that too. I like to add herbs and stuff to my spreads.

    • What is the book title? I’ve been a canner since kid-hood, but am always looking at/for new titles! Thanks!

      • Emmaleigh504

I’ll have to check when I get home..it’s some hipster fancy canning book, but it’s got some lovely ideas.

Rave: Nats game last night–lots of “will they keep their lead?” action and absolutely stunning weather.
Rant: Everybody in my office is sick, and coming to work. Stop bringing your TB coughs and sniffles near me, people!

  • Rave: Moving tomorrow. Heading back to Fairfax well we do a full renovation of our Petworth Rowhome. We are only out of the house for 14 weeks, but will be spending the time at my parents house. Well they are awesome, the wife and I have certainly gotten used to living alone, so it will be an adjustment.

Rave: Sold our cabinets, refrigerator, cheap dresser, and Ikea dresser for $850 already. Hoping to get some more cash out of dishwasher, range, and old washer/dryer. Has been tough, but happy we decided to not just junk this stuff and let it go into the dumpster out front!

Rant: Dumpster permit cost $385 in northern Petworth. Registration for my car for 2 years was $230. What is wrong with that?

  • Rave: Flying out tonight to start a 2.5 week vacation!

Rant: Still not finished with work! Grrrrrrrrr.

  • Rave: The new appliances arrived! I’m getting closer to having a working kitchen. I will be so happy when it’s all done.

Rant: Trying to wrap up one last proposal by the middle of next week. I definitely shouldn’t have started a kitchen renovation right in the middle of proposal season, it has been an absolute nightmare.

Rave: Finally starting to get tomatoes and peppers from my garden!

Rant: I think I may have developed an allergy to dogs. Visited a house yrsterday and the owner had a large dog. By the time I left my nose was runny, my skin itchy, and my eyes were burning. I really hope it was something else, I love dogs and i’ve never had a reaction like that before.

Rave: Its a beautiful day! Heading to The Brixton for drinks after work, looking forward to it!

  • Rave: best friend had a healthy baby boy this morning. So happy for her. Already got to talk to her and heard him gurgling in the background. Yay!!!

Rant. So bored after surgery. My two friends who would visit are out of town. Ready to go back to work, but not ready to go back to work. Boss is ok with telework, but not much that needs to be done right now can be done from home. I got about an hour of work in yesterday.

  • Rant: Union Market is charging $200 a seat for family style dinner (directed for adults you can assume) with 8 famous chefs. Would love for them to have a night where they get celebrity chefs to make meals for parents with toddlers and see which meal the kids eat the most of. I’d pay for that. Not sure if Union Market wants to be kid friendly or not…haven’t quite figured that out yet.

Regardless, I love letting my kid loose in there and seeing all the looks of displeasure from the cool kids.

    • Letting your kid loose? I hope you don’t mean letting him or her run around, scream and knock into other people. It’s downright dangerous for both your kid and other patrons/staff. A restaurant or marketplace is NOT a playground and should not be treated as a place to let your kid get out their steam. It’s parents who think this is acceptable that give a bad name to those that make an effort to teach their kids how to behave properly in adult spaces (which, by the way, is pretty much anywhere but a playground or Chuck E. Cheese).

      • +1. If you’re letting your kid loose as described above, you deserve the looks of displeasure you’re receiving. Be a considerate parent, not a self-centered one.
        Oh, and $200/head isn’t only not kid-friendly. It’s not particularly adult-friendly, either.

    • Not everywhere had to be kid friendly. Sometimes its nice to have an adult’s only vibe going. I lovr Union Market, wish I could afford a ticket to the dinner Sunday, but I don’t think they owe it to anyone to lower the price.

  • Query: I need a nice restaurant for dinner next weekend. I’ve checked Blue Duck Tavern, Mintwood Place, and Le Diplomate for reservations, but of course with waiting this long, all of those are booked up. Does anyone have a recommendation for something similar to those in terms of price and atmosphere? Preferably in DC, but we would consider Alexandria as well. I’m completely drawing a blank.

    • You might want to try BlackSalt in the Palisades.

    • Emmaleigh504

I love Cashions! It’s on the same block as Mintwood and better in my opinion.

    • You probably can’t get reservations in part because it’s restaurant week. Try Evening Star Cafe or Vermilion!

    • Nora in Dupont. Took my girlfriend’s parents there last month and we had a FANTASTIC meal. Got a 630pm reservation for Saturday the day before we went. We sat in the upstairs dining room – we were the first to be seated there, but it had filled up nicely by the time we left (930pm).

They should be able to accommodate you. I’d suggest trying to get a 730pm reservation.

  • rave: crazy stressful week is winding down
rant: I still feel really tense – any suggestions on how I can de-stress my body other than listening to chill music for the rest of the day?

    • Try going outside and getting some fresh air, the weather is perfect! Going for a walk always help me de-stress. Stretching helps as well.

      • I walked 3.5 miles last night (from Politics and Prose on CT to Dupont Circle) and it did help some. I think I could use some sunshine – I’m going to try and leave work early today!

  • Rant: People in General Counsel being so conservative that it is debilitating to getting work done.

  • RANT: Was driving on Calvert west of Connecticut around 12:15 today and a dogwalker with 3-4 dogs decided to cross the street with her dogs in the middle of the block. One of her dogs (a black and white fluffy sheep dog looking dog) decides to lay down in the street. She keeps going and either drops the dog’s leash or the leash pops off his/her collar. Luckily I was going slow enough I was able to stop 2-3 car lengths away while she went back to get the dog by its collar and take him back to the other side of the street. The cars coming the other way were much, much closer to this whole mess. Also lucky that the dog decided not to bolt, because if it had, I think it would have been hit by oncoming traffic coming the other way. What the heck was the dogwalker thinking crossing in the middle of this pretty busy street??

  • Rave: Friends in town to have a last hurrah before we leave DC (and the country!)
Rant: they found $200 worth of parking tickets on our car. Any tips on contesting parking tickets? online or in person??

    • If you got the parking tickets in error you should contest them online. You can upload pictures and other files. I have been successful in contesting erroneous tickets twice that way.

  • Rave: Today is my Friday.
Rant: I’s my Friday because I had to switch every other Friday off to this one because of a meeting next Friday.
Rant/Rave: The weather is beautiful, but I was really looking forward to a pool day on my day off. Will mid 70s be warm enough for me tomorrow when I’m always cold? I hope so or I’ll be extra mad I had to change it.
Rave: Bocce tonight and spinning in the morning. I’ve taken two classes at Peloton so far and I really them.

  • Rave: It’s beautiful outside!
Rave: Actually got to experience it, since I’m teleworking today!
Rave: Real, honest-to-goodness construction action at the Monsenor Romero Apartments!
Rave: Each Peach Market opened yesterday! Good prices on most items, kind of a weird selection of dry goods, but they’re taking suggestions.

Watch out world, Mt. Pleasant Street is coming for you!
