Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

Rave: Moving to Baltimore where its not only cheaper but offers more of a Northeast city feel and look with an actual tall downtown.

  • Rave: Had a great dinner at Dino with old friends visiting from out of town last night. We don’t go there nearly enough. Had the “tomato tasting”. SO delicious.

Rant: While we were out, every other car in our parking lot was vandalized. We live between Logan and Shaw, spray paint on all the cars but ours. I’m glad it wasn’t ours, but I HATE that feeling and HATE that this was vandalism for vandalism’s sake. Just pisses me off.

Rant: none of the nursery furniture I liked will fit in our space, so back to square one, and probably Ikea which I was trying to avoid. Oh well.

  • Rant: Tremendous joint pain in my fingers and wrist. Hard to imagine this will just keep getting worse as I get older.

  • Moving back home to Baltimore from DC was one of the best decisions I’ve made in recent years. I feel so much more at home there, and I love the arts and food scene there- loads of great new local food-focused restaurants and new breweries- have a great move, and welcome home, hon!

    • I’ve thought a lot about moving back to Baltimore (funny because as a teenager, I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of there…guess nostalgia sets in as you get older ;)), but the prospect of the commute just kills it for me. When I first started working in DC, I commuted from just north of Baltimore, and it got soul-sucking after a while. Thus far, I haven’t been ready to go back to that kind of a commute. We’ll see, maybe someday in the future. Way more job prospects in my field in DC and New York (where I spent most of my adult life until recently), though.

I’m originally from DC, and lived in NYC for over a decade before moving to Baltimore. I’ve really grown to love my neighborhood and celebrating quirkiness . And the FOOD! In a few months, I’ll be moving back to DC – and I’m already doing my Baltimore nostalgia tour! I’ve been trying to convince myself that my NEW neighborhood will encompass all three cities . Fingers crossed!

  • Rave: Loving this summer
Rave: Went for a run and toe is only a little sore – sprained and bruised but probs not broken.

  • Rave: We bought an awesome condo in Adam’s Morgan, just moved in and love the place.

Rant: New upstairs neighbor was banging on her hardwood floors this morning at 7 a.m. non-stop for 20 minutes with a foreign object. We think she might be slightly crazy.

  • I’ll add a similar rant: My wife went out to our brand new car and found that someone had put a screw in her back right tire. No chance we picked it up driving. It’s more on the side than the bottom and the angle of entry is wrong. It’s also a brand new screw..no dirt on it at all and still has the blue coating on it, oh and there were hand prints where someone was bracing themselves against the tire. In fact, I showed my cousin who’s in town for a couple of weeks our car last night fairly late in the evening and it was totally fine after our drive. Someone is targeting us…just a week ago someone keyed the crap out of the rear driver side door. I want to yell to my neighborhood “SEE…THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T HAVE NICE THINGS!! THIS IS WHY RETAILERS WON’T COME HERE!!!” Complete assholes.

  • Rant: Popville says my name is already registered, but I never seem to have gotten a password, so all comments are doomed to be dropped to the bottom of the thread, regardless of whether they are responses or not.

  • RANT: Smashed an already broken toe into a step stool in my hallway early this morning. Stupid toes.
RAVE: Other than the toe, feeling great!

  • Rant: My neighbor scared off four guys yesterday evening running down the alley and ripping open packages — obviously stolen from people’s porches. Some of the stuff they were actually throwing in trash cans.
Rave: They dropped two. One I got back to the owner last night.
Question: Anyone know Anna Salzberg on Georgia Ave? I have her package. They didn’t get it open before they tore off.
And yes: I will call the cops. But we know how that goes. I’d rather just return people’s property.

  • Rave: AWESOME night for SOTG! Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory has some great lines in it that I plan on using–for example, “I’m a little deaf in this ear, you must speak a little louder next time.” Plus we were right next to the TV which I assume is for Closed Captioning…so all the time he mumbles in French and German, we were able to read the translations.

Rave: Concerts! Today I buy tickets for Matt Nathanson, tomorrow for John Legend!!

    Rant: It’s only TUESDAY.

    Rant: Crazy, literally crazy, people.

  • Rave: have not again smashed already-broken toe today.

Rant: I feel your pain anonymous! I cower whenever someone comes near me for fear that they’ll somehow step on my foot.

Rave: Working from home as the commute is bad for the healing process

Rant: May have to miss biggest regatta of the season — after I bought airline tickets

Rant-ish: My childish sense of humor. My first thought on seeing “super dog” was to wonder if that was Anthony Weiner’s latest campaign poster. Lol

  • Rant/Rave: Going to the beach this weekend, hope the rain doesn’t screw it up. Haven’t decided on Ocean City or VA Beach… Good lord! Three star+ hotels have gotten a lot more expensive. Competitive pricing is severely weak among travel sites, they’re all priced the same. Anyone got any suggestions on a good place to stay?

Rave: Gonna give my dog a good doggie spa vacation while I’m out.

Rant: Redskins tickets sell out instantly to scalpers, scalpers create huge $$ markups on stubhub, I’d rather watch the game at home, everyone else wants to go to a live game, I have to buy all the tickets in advance, if anyone drops out, I’m gonna be mad. Seats I’d usually buy for 150$ are selling this season for 250$. Buggers.

Rave/Rant: Quiet time at work allows me to look into my travel arrangements, but wading through all the tiny pictures and shoddy info on these sites makes the search almost as bad as a full time job.

      • Which I guess I should comment on. I have stayed in VA Beach using AirBnB, there are a lot of good options. I have only had positive experiences with AirBnB and I recommend it to everyone. It’s so much more flexible for beach vacations, many rentals have 2 or 3 day minimums, as compared to the Saturday-Saturday Vacation Rental by Owner system. I have used it in Paris, Montreal. VA Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Staunton, VA.

        • novadancer

where in Paris? I was looking thru BnB and a bunch of other sites this weekend. I would love a recommendation!

          • Oh course you chose the one place I’ve stayed at that’s no longer on AirBnB. I did go in December, so there were many places to choose from, but I did find that many in the area around Centre Pompidou were so much better priced than any nearby hotels. I stayed in a very small studio, but it had everything I needed and the location and price ($60US/night) could not be beat. What time of year are you going?

  • I am kind of a quiet guy and went out with this lady last night. She talks too much. To the point I shut down and she kept asking “are you ok?” I shut down even more. She clearly wanted to go to my cave, we did; by then I was completely overwhelmed and nothing happened, I just wanted to rest. Now she’s telling me she’ll be in my neighborhood tonight… I was hoping to have a quiet night! (“blurred lines” plays in the background)

    • 14thandChapin

Dont worry about it most the time girls talk to much, just listen and nod your head and pretend to be interested. Side note i HATE when people ask if ‘you are ok’. Of course im not ‘OK’ you are annoying and self centered!!!

      • epric002

girls talk too much: ick. what is this, high school?

        • 14thandChapin

Not that it is a bad thing, I am just saying some people are quieter and its annoying when others ask ‘are you ok’ if you are overwhelmed by the conversation. I have had it happen to me occasionally, it could happen between two guys also but i feel like only girls would ask ‘are you ok’.

    • OK, obviously I don’t know either party here, and some people DO talk incessantly (I seem to get stuck sitting next to them on the bus all the time). But I know from personal experience that another possibility is that when one person “shuts down,” it tends to prompt the other person to talk MORE in an attempt to fill up the awkward pauses, because most people don’t really like to sit in mutual silence on a date. (I am shy, but when the person with me is even more shy, I tend to default into the extrovert role.) At least this lady is attempting to pay some attention to something other than herself by pausing to ask if you’re feeling ok. That’s your opportunity to either: a) jump into the conversation; or b) if you want to extricate yourself, just say something like “I’m sorry, it’s been a long day and I’m kind of exhausted–mind if we call it a night?”

  • Hope you feel better Em!

  • Rave: Hip surgery seems to have gone well. I’m in less pain than I thought I’d be (yay good pain meds!). PT starts today, so now begins the real fun.

Rant: I can’t seem to stay awake more than an hour or so at a time. Just so exhausted. How am I going to get though my Netflix queue?

Rant: really, really rough time in the recovery room last week. I’ve never had an adverse reaction to anesthesia, but boy did I this time. Not fun.

Rave: if it fixes the problem, it will all be worth it.

    • Emmaleigh504

Yay for less pain & good pain meds when there is pain. My recover after surgery was awful. They kept asking me how the pain was and I kept trying to say f*ck the pain I want to puke my guts up. I didn’t start hurting until the hours of nausea passed.

Hope you have a easy recovery!

  • That would be a great idea if I was traveling there with a few people… This time I’m going there solo and having a few friends visit me (once I’m there) so I want to stay in a decent hotel… I’m trying to get an oceanfront suite with a view within walking distance of all the beach/boardwalk action. 🙂

  • “’I’m trying to get an oceanfront suite with a view within walking distance of all the beach/boardwalk action. :)”

Then yes, that’s going to be $$$, especially at the last minute.

My suggestion would be to get on Air BnB or the vacation rental sites (VRBO or Homeaway). Even if the place has a week long minimum rental, call up the owners with availability and offer to only rent for two days. If they don’t have someone yet, they will often be willing to cut a deal so that they make some money and the place doesn’t go empty. There’s plenty of condos and small beach cottages out there within a block or two of the beach. Ocean facing is kinda pointless in a crowded beach city, IMHO.

  • Rave: Have another date with a really great guy tomorrow night!
Rant: We’re both so busy that we’ve only been able to see each other in person about once a week!

  • Rant: Ah, the family drama is back in full swing. Thankfully, the topic brings my Mom down so she doesn’t want to talk about it anymore. Unfortunately, my sister and I have been talking the last month, so she can now direct her endless and nasty text messages at me. GREAT.
Rave: Turning my cell phone OFF and not having to read about it.
I need a vacation. A vacation far, far away from here.

  • Rant: Pedestrians getting hit outside my office in Dupont … https://twitter.com/DCPoliceDept/status/364759621782605825

Anyone have any info on this?

  • epric002

rant: spent 2 hours in traffic this morning driving to and from a meeting i couldn’t attend b/c despite last week’s assurances, my badge was in fact NOT renewed. grrrrrr.
rave: great yoga class last night. only 2 of us showed up so a semi-private lesson was nice 🙂
ranty rave: (good) sore from yoga.

  • MsNesbitt

Rant: My new apartment has a few…quirks. Both sinks leak (but the Super is looking at them today) and the kitchen is just the strangest. There is only one available plug, opposite the counter, so my microwave and coffee maker have nowhere to go. Also, whoever installed the new oven (A) did not measure the space and picked an oven that is too big, and (B) did not push the overly large oven back up against the wall, so not only is there a large gap between oven back and wall, but the oven door doesn’t open all the way! Lazy, lazy, lazy.

Rave: My new commute is less than 15 minutes. 15 minutes!

    • Blithe

Is there room for a table, or a bookshelf or a fold-down shelf on the wall with the plug? A narrow bookshelf would give you storage space plus homes for your coffee maker and maybe a small microwave. Can you tell that I spent some of my NYC years living in tenements?

      • MsNesbitt

I have a kitchen cart that I use for extra counter space (because of course there is also not any counter space), so I don’t really want to have to take up half the cart for the microwave/coffee maker. I also have a bakers rack, but the ideal place to put it makes it so that the outlet is juuuuust out of reach of the microwave’s power cord. I could put it next to the kitchen cart, but it would look funny because it would be taller than the bar area. Maybe I could put the microwave on the bar….

  • Have you combed craigslist yet? There is high turnover on baby related stuff as you might imagine. We also found that you don’t neeed half the stuff that gets pushed on you. A good comfortable rocking chair, a crib, and ten thousand onesies, blankets, burp cloths, and diapers is all you really need. Good luck.

  • Intended for reply to JinDC. Problems persist.

  • Ocean City has a 3 star hotel? Seems grand for them.

  • Ugh. In response to Jack 5. PoP, you still working on this issue. Not hating, just asking.

  • Quotia Zelda

Rant: Dealing with a LOT of cranky people today, all of whom just need to get the hell over themselves.

  • If you where I live, the downstairs neighbor is the one to look out for. (Biltmore St.)

  • Kind of gross, but I think you’ll appreciate it, Emmaleigh504: several years ago I had surgery – almost as bad as the post-surg nausea is how cold you feel. i was freezing, kept trying to slur out “i’m cold, get me a frickin blanket!” but of course no one could understand me. Finally I barfed all over myself, and i didn’t mind at all because it was so warm… Wishing you a speedy recovery!

    • Emmaleigh504

      hahahaha that’s funny!

    • I totally appreciate this. As someone who is constantly freezing, when I was in the ER last year, I kept trying to ask for more blankets but was so high and sick, no real words actually came out. Then, I threw up on my arm, and a few minutes later was in a hot shower and more pajamas. It was the best shower I had ever taken. Hope for a speedy recovery Emmaleigh!

      • Yeah, they were real quick to clean me up, and I was all, No! No! So warm! In retrospect, maybe it was good they didn’t give me a blanket, because I would have barfed on it.

  • Rave: Moving abroad, finally living my dream.
Rant: SO much to do before I move. Have been in DC for 6 years but I feel like I still need to do/see so much! Also need to get rid of a ton of furniture!

  • thanks – can’t really buy a used crib, all we’re getting is a crib/dresser to use as a changing table/glider. Nothing else. Not much to buy used in that, not sure I want a glider that another person’s baby has spit up on. It’s just annoying to have such little space at this point.

  • I went to VA Beach last weekend and stayed at the Westin in VA Beach Town Center. If you can deal with driving to the beach each day (about 10-15 minutes, $10 to park all day), it worked really well. We aren’t party animals though, so we didn’t care about being oceanfront at night for the “scene.” It was over $100 cheaper than a shithole oceanfront, so we went for it and liked it a lot. Obviously not for everyone but I’d recommend it as an alternative.
