Weekend/after work (non-professional) bike group:

“I am looking to see if anyone is interested in meeting up and forming a small group of riders who tries to meet (when available) after work or on weekends for bike rides in the 20-50 mile range @ a pace of 13-16 mph. I have done most of my riding solo this year, but have found I enjoy riding much better when it is with a group (doing the occasional weekend bike shop ride). I don’t ride all the time (maybe 1-2 times per week), but it is more fun riding in a group to have others pushing you and also so you can have a slip stream to ride longer.

I usually like to ride the NoVA trails (Mt. Vernon, Cutsis, W&OD) but am not opposed to CC and Rock Creek Park trails. I also don’t mind doing laps around Haines Point when I want to do something quick after work. If anyone is interested let me know.”

  • Which shop rides have you tried? Group and club rides are new to me as well, and I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by the depth of ride options and the size of the cycling community of all levels in the area. Have you been successful researching? There is pretty much an option any day of the week. If you’re looking for a less structured time and ride schedule, chatting to other riders is probably a good place to meet people who would be interested.

For the speeds you suggested, I’d recommend CC rated rides from Potomac Pedalers or the Saturday shop ride from the Bike Rack: I’m sure there are many more.

  • Sounds just up my alley
those are about the lengtsd i do and about the speeds in which i do them, sometimes the shorter ones will be 17+ though. no pro over here, dont be worried

i typically have a group of 2-5 friends i will ride with (i guess i somewhat got them into it once they saw how much i enjoyed cycling) but would be down to add people or join other groups.

  • OP here – I have done the ride at The Bike Rack on Saturdays (30 miles through rock creek) and it was a great ride and I plan on doing it again. Their Sunday ride scares me a little b/c the people on it seem way more intense. I found Capital Hill Bikes has a nice 30-40 mile ride on Sunday mornings that I might give a shot. Thanks for the other suggestions.

@That Man A, If you would not mind, I would like to join you and your group! Just shoot me an message rpbarnhi at gmail dot com and we can figure something out.

  • Consider the daily hain’s point ride at noon, M-F, although the pace might be a bit high. You can always just drop off the back if it’s a fast day. Also check out dcvelo and ncvc. They both have tons of rides year round.

  • Don’t be afraid of the Sunday BR ride! It’s a great group of people that will really challenge your skills. If you are comfortable with the Saturday ride, I would suggest giving the Sunday ride a spin. There are several routes (40, 50, 60, and 70+) offered pretty much every week, with a mandatory no drop 40. I’ve lead out the slower groups a few times and can guarantee that the pace does not go above 18 mph. If you’re still not convinced, drop Chuck and email and he’ll be able to give you some more information. In the meantime, PPTC has a Wednesday night ride out of Mitchell park at 6PM with multiple skill levels. A great group of people on that ride as well. I would also suggest checking out the bike shop down by the convention center. They do some very nicely paced rides through different parts of the city. If you have any other questions, just let me know and I can connect with you off post.

    • Thanks for the motivation. I think that when I have a Sunday free I will give it a shot. As for the Haines Point noon rides – man I wish I had a work schedule that would allow that!
