From Paul Ruppert:

“We are going to extend our preview (1017 7th Street, NW) one more week at Hogo. So Makoto will be cooking in there through August 3.

“Petworth Citizen” is inspired by the community newspaper of the same name that chronicled Petworth neighborhood happenings from 1916 – 1951. “Petworth Citizen” will be a neighborhood bar (829 Upshur St, NW) with great bar food and a literary focus. The name also points to our intention to become a gathering place, welcoming neighbors from near and far.”

  • So, I’m confused. Is the Petworth Citizen going to be at 1017 7th St NW, or is it somewhere on Upshur?

Hogo is where they do the preview menu. Petworth Citizen’s permanent location is the former Island Cafe (pictured above) at 829 Upshur St, NW. Expect a Sept. opening in that location.

It seems like a name that will be immediately shortened to “The Citizen.”

“Hey honey, let’s go down to the Petworth Citizen tonight!”

  • Brookland can have it’s Whole Foods! I’ll take the Petworth Citizen:)

    • Er, I wouldn’t be too quick to make that deal. A Whole Foods in Petworth would have a far greater economic impact on the neighborhood than one restaurant. It would also serve a far larger group of people and create more jobs.

      • We already have an overpriced organic grocery store called “yes!” Petworth doesn’t need a Whole Foods, especially once the new Safeway on George Ave. is done.

        • Well put. Looking forward to something better than Domku…and hoping the competition spurs the latter to improve.

      • I’m happy to have the Petworth Citizen coming in, but wouldn’t mind a Whole Foods too. Look what the Whole Foods on P Street did for the Logan Circle area.

  • “Literary focus”? Does that means readings? Books on the bookshelves instead of sports on TV? Debates on what poet was the greatest of all time?

    • Prince Of Petworth

“Our back room will host literary events – author readings, book launches, poetry slams, fundraisers for literacy programs, and a Free Book library.”

  • Love the name. Hey Petworth Citizen, can you please extend your menu to include the scrumptious pastries from Paisley Fig for the am?

  • Awesome! Welcome to Petworth! Great name – Cant wait to check it out in person!

  • Can’t wait! Looking forward to having another gathering place option in Petworth come September!

  • Don’t forget the kid friendly menu, you know Petworth is crawling with families with young kids who other wise don’t get out as much. Any more. Sigh.

  • love it.
