Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • I am so waiting for my white daisies, they are about to burst.

Rant: *Sigh,* Father-stereotypes always make finding a Father’s Day Card for my dad really really really hard. No, he doesn’t “fix” things with tools, no he’s not the “grill master,” he doesn’t drink so all the beer-joke cards are out, he doesn’t play golf, he doesn’t drive a boat, he doesn’t even wear ties to work for Chrissake! Where are the Father’s day cards for all the guys who aren’t wearing knee-high argyle socks and juggling a briefcase, tool kit, and grillin’ tools whilst smiling handsomely from their leisure boat?

It’s cool, I found one, it just took a really long time and was frustrating. Gonna start making pop-up cards again like when I was a kid or something!

    • just make your own.

      • I hate when they say “World’s Best Dad” or something similar. My dad is not the world’s best dad, but he still deserves a nice card that makes him feel loved and appreciated!

    • Shopping for Father’s Day cards at a suburban Wal-Mart basically made me lose all faith in humanity.

    • Where are the “I fucking love and miss you Dad, I’m sorry your life was cut way short by cancer” cards? Cause that’s a real rant.

        I’m sorry for your loss.

        • I’m sorry for being snippy….really I was a jerk. This is five years without him. It’s been kinda rough.

          • I didn’t think you were being snippy or a jerk at all – and even if you were, this is a place to rant (and revel).

My mom died of cancer last year and Mother’s Day was very difficult. I avoided stores with their big displays of cards because it was too sad.

I’m sorry about the loss of your father.

    • So true! I don’t know any Dads who fit the beer drinking-golfing-fishing-car repairing stereotypes that all Father’s Day cards celebrate. And I even know people who design cards at Hallmark! I don’t know why they aren’t making cards for the rest of us.

I just get blank cards and make my own funny comments on the picture that apply to the person and occasion.

    • I always get my cards from the card vendor (can’t remember that name) that’s at the Eastern Market flea market most Saturdays and Sundays. They have lots of unique and beautiful cards imported from England, and the prices are amazing ($1-2 a card). Or if your recipient likes snarky humor there’s always Groovy down the street.

  • I’m surprised at how much it bothers me that the banner, banner ad and “top stories” takes up the whole screen on my Macbook. Before I can see any content I have to scroll down.

And then scroll back up again to get to the comment section.

Dan, can you make the “top stories” boxes smaller?
