Developer Launches Survey for “Walter Reed Tomorrow”

From an email:

“Walter Reed Tomorrow” is a cool project Hines Urban Atlantic has put together as part of their RFP submission for the Walter Reed site. Between now and July 3rd, the far-reaching survey and publicity campaign will gather nearby residents’ feedback about what Walter Reed should become. The data collected will inform Hines Urban Atlantic’s proposal to the D.C. Government about what should come the massive site – condos, retail, community space, etc.

I can’t wait to see what opinions we get – the project has so much potential!

You can fill out the survey here.

  • We should move UDC to Walter Reed and make it a proper state university.

I dont know if that would work since its currently not metro accessable.

It’s an easy 0.6-mile walk from the Takoma Metro station. Sure, it would be nice if it were closer to the Metro, but with the 16th St, 14th St, and Georgia Avenue buses and an easy 8-10 minute walk to the metro, it’s not exactly inaccessible. I’ve been walking right by Walter Reed to get from my house to the metro for almost 10 years.

    • This actually sounds like a great idea! With all the financial trouble of late, UDC could make a killing selling off their upper NW property in exchange for a large plot on Walter Reid. Unfortunately I do not see this happening given that government members have already been paid off to dole this out to developers / Walmart.

Anyone want to take bets on Bowser being investigated for impropriety?

A movie theatre would be amazing. I would frequent a Wegmans as well.

  • Wegman’s! pleeeeease.

  • Wegman’s please! I’m a HUGE fan!

  • Can they add a Metro Station on the GA avenue side??

It’s so close to the Takoma station that it would be kind of ridiculous. It would be like putting yet another metro station in between U Street and Columbia Heights.

p.s. I live 3 blocks from the Georgia Avenue side of Walter Reed. I would love to have a metro station 3 blocks from my house. The value of my house would probably nearly double practically overnight. Yet I still think it would be silly to have another metro station that close to an existing one.

        • Two things – I think the current neighbors would oppose the kind of ‘City Center like’ density that would make adding the station worthwhile. (The historic elements on the property that must be maintained will also limit the density) I would argue that the walk from the Takoma Metro to the old Walter Reed entry gate is somewhat comparable to walk from the U Street Metro to the Columbia Heights Metro.

  • PLEASE include clean energy in the plan. Solar and geothermal are so easy and cost effective! PLEASE consider co-housing. If you make a site available for a co-housing group to buy, you will have a great mini-community within your new development. Check out Takoma Village Co-housing to get an idea about how co-housing works: I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO LIVE IN A CO-HOUSING COMMUNITY WITHIN THE NEW WR DEVELOPMENT!

    • Alice, as much as I agree with you, I see little chance of “co-” anything given the current arrangement with the DC government.

  • Retail! Seriously as someone who lives right next to the site I can attest the dire need for retail here besides dollar stores and laundromats. Since there aren’t any decent dining options I’m constantly traveling to SS, takoma, Chevy chase or Columbia heights.

Unfortunately I don’t see anything happening of any worth any time soon. They’ve had the site for at least a year and nothing has happened. Ugh. Come on, DC. Do something with a sense of urgency once in a while.
