Dear PoPville – Check Out the New 11th Street, SE Bridge

Thanks to a reader for sending these great photos of the 11th Street Bridge:

“This is from the last Navy Gate on 11th-where the path splits: down to the NY trail or up over the bridge.”

“Temp access on left, permanent on right (nice n wide) but concrete still drying.”

“Pedestrian observation decks off of 11th St Bridge – this is gonna be awesome when it’s finished!!”

  • I saw this over the weekend as well. The Anacostia River Walk Trail ties into this, and is nothing short of spectacular. A few big components of that trail, including the 11th street bridge connection, have recently been finished or are about to be finished. I think this is about to pop as one of the best recreational areas in the city.

    Very exciting!

    • Unfortunately, the signage for the trail on the N/W side of the Anacostia is confusing and terrible.

  • That’s clever how they used the piers from one of the old bridge spans to support the pedestrian overlooks. Probably saved money on demolition, too.

  • Does anyone know if there will be tables or benches or chairs on the observation decks? I’m thinking it would be a nice place to have lunch on work days!

  • The observation platforms are temporary. With the endorsement of the city, a non-profit org is leading the charge to install a new deck on the preexisting pilings to create a park across the full span. THEARC, led by Scot Kratz, will be launching a design competition later this summer with funding provided entirely through private donations.
